Jacob to Tali: Remember to introduce yourself to our ships AI.
Really? Who would say that to a bloody Quarian?

His actual line:
"If you say so. I'm not so sure it's a good idea..."
And I'm pretty sure the intent was "OK, but I'm probably not the best choice for this kind of fighting."
Jacob to Tali: Remember to introduce yourself to our ships AI.
Really? Who would say that to a bloody Quarian?
Did you forget the rest of that convo?
-----
Jacob: "Cerberus saw footage of you in action, Tali'Zorah. We're looking forward to having you on the team. Your engineering expertise will really benefit the mission."
Tali: "I don't know who you are, but Cerberus threatened the security of the Migrant Fleet. Don't make nice."
(Shep convo option)
Jacob: "I wasn't part of what happened to the Migrant Fleet, but I understand your distrust. I hope we'll get past that as we work together."
Tali: (completely ignoring Jacob now) "I assumed that you were undercover, Shepard. Maybe even planning to blow Cerberus up. If that's the case, I'll loan you a grenade. Otherwise, I'm here for you. Not for them."
(Shep convo option)
Jacob: (still being polite) "I'll get Tali'Zorah the necessary security clearance to access our systems."
Tali: (in a rather snotty tone) "Please do. I can't be part of your team if I don't know how the ship works. (turns to Shep) Remember, Shepard, these people thought enslaving Thorian creepers and rachni was a good idea. I'll be in engineering."
-----
Only after that does Jacob suggest she say "Hi" to EDI. IOW, he was sick of taking her sh!t after trying to be polite and respectful. Her attitude is understandable, but the fact is she was just plain being rude to a person who had only treated her courteously.

The thing that kills me about all this Jacob crap is that us Black folks FINALLY get a character in a game that isn't a stereotypical shucking and jiving fool and he gets so much hate for being normal.
It pisses me off that a decent character may get thrown to the wayside because of a bunch of insecure players.
I really don't see how racism is involved in any way about people hating Jacob. The human counsilor and his advisor are blacks more or less. Your Shepard could be black. You don't see chinese, indians or arabs ****ing about lack of representation in a video game.
Jacob is useless inside and outside combat. He is willingly working for terrorists but he hates mercs. WTF!?? He has to be the dumbest guy ever. His loyality mission is just aweful.
Jacob: "Shepard I am not able to focus because I got a distress message from a ten year old ship. And BTW my father was on it and also I have daddy issues."
Shepard: "Of course! I was beginning to think you were almost normal."
After the mission.
Shepard: "You must be traumatised after seeing the atrocities your father did."
Jacob: "I am good Shepard. Ready and focused."
Shepard: "So, you got more focused after you saw your father commit horrors that should scar a kid psychologicaly forever."
Jacob: "Yup."
Shepard: "... er... I need a drink"
I totally agree with this post 100%. PTSD has never been addressed in action videogames mostly because they require mass murder. Mass Effect does a fine job of avoiding the issue. I am all for more use of the ship's counselor in said moments.
But would that add to the gameplay? I think it would add to the story and to the characters. Yet the action fans will certainly die a death of boredom.
All squad members have repressed emotions that would seem to comprimise the mission. The same can be said for Tali, Jack, Miranda,Samara,Thane and Garrus. I also find the structure of these loyalty missions to be too similar. Some one should be normal how likely is that all crew members have family issues or close friend issues that need to be resolved. Lame. I expect more Bioware look at Gene Roddenberry
Back to Jacob, let me play devil's advocate I think if Jacob was maybe Jennifer with a big rack and a big ass, we wouldn't have a problem with the character due to the fact that gamers could just lust after her for entertainment.
Jacob is a character that can't be slept with by most gamers and he isn't an alien, there lies the problem.
For the record I like the character and don't need him to be a loud overbearing comedian to like him. Though I due find Cole Train amusing. I don't want Bioware looking at Epic for character inspiration they should look at the work of Gene Rodenberry. I don't want Bioware looking at Epic ever, let Epic cater to its fan base and we will cater to our own.
I think of Jacob as the ladies man on the ship, William Riker if you will. Which is fine for me. He should become the munitions and armory specialist. The guy seems to know how to get his load off.

I did remember, but I'll be honest, I couldn't be bothered to search for the transcript. What you posted was correct, however, can you blame Tali? Cerberus attacked the Migrant Fleet, and we all know how important that is to Quarians, they're litterally like one big family. Can you imagine if someone attacked your relatives and then because of a friend you ended up having to work with the attackers?
I do agree that she was a bit rude, but to be fair, Jacob represents Cerberus, can you blame her? To use my earlier analogy, imagine if your relatives attackers spoke to you as Jacob did, would you be so quick to just say, hey, it doesn't matter! Or would you just say, I may have to work with you, but don't expect us to become bosom buddies? (Which is more or less what Tali said really).

That comment wasn't even him getting back at Tali, but at the entire quarian species. AI is taboo to them.
If he didn't say anything, he would've been the bigger man; but instead of that, he decided to be even more obnoxious than Tali.
He is also an hypocrite, because he kills for a non-government sanctioned organization and yet he feels he has the right to criticize Thane for being an assassin.

You can't speak for me. Miranda has a big rack, big ass, and can even be "slept" with, and I have very much the same issues with her as I do Jacob. She's barely any more likeable in my eyes. There are also plenty of aliens that I don't much care for either, and plenty of humans I like a lot.
It's pretty telling how much people make excuses (all bad) for his lack of character. If you like him, for whatever reason, fine. But let's not act like he doesn't have good reason to be considered bland.

Precisely, I find it quite ironic that Jacob goes on about how he hates Mercenaries, when he technically is one.

It's not about being depressed.
Jacob doesn't have a cool origin; and if he does, we never learn about it because he isn't willing to tell us anything. Everytime we try to learn something about his past he say it's "none of (our) business". How are you going to relate to someone like that?
Personally, I don't think he is *that* bad, but it would help a lot if he was more approachable.
I think Jacobs "stand off-ish" nature is because he works for Cerberus, he doesn't know who to trust. The Alliance is ignoring the bigger threat to save their own hides and the only people trying to make a difference are terrorists. As he says, everyone at Cerberus is acting like the Illusive Man - Hiding bullsh*t behind lies (I think that's the quote, someone may need to correct me). The guy has had no one to open up to in a long time, by now he's probably used to bottling it up and dealing with it on his own terms.
Although I do agree with you, I hope they open up his backstory a little more in Mass Effect 3.... That's if he returns of course.

Actually, witnessing mass murder isn't required. In order to develop PTSD the person has to witness or experience a traumatic event that has an affect on their mental health; even being in a car accident (regardless of anyone getting hurt) can trigger it. Mass murder is basically just something that is more likely due to being a soldier at war, defined as "shell shock".Had-to-say wrote...

I don't think Jacob had any malicious intent with that one Tali comment. It seemed like a case of "foot in mouth" syndrome. It wasn't in any kind of sarcastic tone from what I could tell.
Nah, there was definitely some bite in that line reading. He was letting her know he'd only take so much crap off her.
What I find odd is that people are all "You can't tell her that!" as if she was somehow not going to learn EDI existed within the next couple minutes anyway. Jacob probably would have told her anyway, only more diplomatically.

I think some people mean it more along the lines of "don't be a ****** about it" or him stating it a little bit later on in a discussion with Tali. At least that is how I was when I first heard it; I first misinterpretted it as him saying something stupid but then I realized it was more a "kiss my ass" kind of remark.didymos1120 wrote...

People can say his blackness has nothing to do with them disliking him but he's the exact same character as Kaidan, with the exact same corny love interest lines but the white guy is praised around here while Jacob is always the one people hate.
No. Kaidan's romance dialogue is several orders of magnitude less narmtastic than what was in Jacob's. And I count Femshep's lines too. Also, Kaidan used to get slammed all the time, and still does on occasion. He's just not the forum's favorite chew-toy anymore. Come ME3, the title will likely pass to someone else.
