In ME3 Jacob needs to yell "Enough is enough! I have had it with these mother******* husks on this mother******* reaper!"

His popularity rating will go way up.

And here we go again......This is not snakes on a plane.

And Jacob and Samuel L. Jackson only have, for all intents and purposes, two things in common: race and gender.  I've been down this road before with Chris Brown comparisons.  We might like to insist that it isn't about race, but I'm not convinced.

I like Jacob as he is. In fact I would prefer him as a squad member in ME3 over this James Sanders guy. Yet if he isn't interesting enough for everybody else, maybe pulling a Snakes on a Plane would change that. Beats some of the other ideas on this topic.

That's not exactly inspiring, given that your most noteworthy competition involves a sex change and cocaine.

James Sanders... seeing how GI described him as a typical buff soldier that's suppose to act as a foil to new players. ;P

I'm actually hoping BW 'spices him up' for ME3, give him a second chance.

I can see it now....

Fem Shep comes walking out of a place. Then out of a corner  pops Jacob with a creppy smile and stalker face, "Hello there Shepard, sur-Priiiiizeee! Image IPB ".....

I already saw how awesome character Jacob was. He's the only sane guy on a ship full of craziness. He doesn't complain he jsut goes and gets the job done. Much respect for that guy. Plus he cares about Shepard and says those three words that no other Me2 LI says. "I love you"Image IPBImage IPB

The dislike for Jacob among the fanbase isn't about race. Or at least it isn't for most people. Consider for example that Anderson, who is also a black male character, is probably one of the more popular characters.

True, but Keith David could play a frog and make it one of the more popular characters. As for Jacob, I just think people don't like him because there's nothing particularly interesting about him, but I for one respect his get-stuff-done-with-no-BS attitude. In fact, if you think about it, he's pretty similar to Garrus. Garrus just has cooler looks, a cooler voice, and awesome sniping skills.

A Teacher or Udina's deputy are good candidates for that.

Pretty sure it does.

It's been scientificly and clinically proven.

While Jacob was pretty boring, I think it helped to have a sane romance option in the game. Look at DA2 - there's Isabela who is a pirate with STDs or Merrill - an anorexic elf with face tatoos who looks about 9 or 10 years old. Then for the female (or male I guess) romance options you have Anders - whiny guy who doesn't shut up about mage rights and Fenris - whiny guy (who also looks out of final fantasy) who doesn't shut up about hating mages. The pirate is actually the most normal character and the one I went with on both playthroughs...

I guess Jacob and Miranda acted as sane characters so you didn't feel forced to go with one of the more extreme personalities such as Jack. Not that you can't make sane characters interesting - Alistair was interesting, as was Leliana (in DAO), and so was Miranda in ME2. But Jacob was alright - I think he at least contributed to the game just by being sane.

His skin is just light enough to make it ambiguous though.  And even if you disagree, you can probably see that Anderson is at least has lighter skin than Jacob, which is more significant than most people realize.  I'm not saying that people on these boards are actively thinking "Jacob is black so I don't like him."  It's more subtle and internal.  I wish Bioware would add a black woman to the cast (other than Shepard), as it would be fascinating to see players' reactions.  In any event, this is not the ideal place for discussions of race, so if you are curious about my perspectives, please PM me.

He's annoyingly self righteous for someone who joined Cerberus. That annoys me, as does the inability to properly answer his Alliance bashing.

I think Conrad is all ready more interesting than Jacob,  this would backfire horribly.

If it were about race, why don't we see threads about how boring Captain Anderson is? He's very well-liked and has been since ME1. Kaidan is not exactly white himself, some find him more boring than Jacob (I'd disagree, but...)

I've already addressed Captain Anderson, but another point about him is that Captain Anderson doesn't get the screen time that a squadmate potentially can.  Nor is Captain Anderson a love interest.

you sir are a RACIST!

I'm going to assume that this post, as well as your others on this thread, are mean in jest.  In which case, HAHA.

Seriously, though, I would like to see a good black, asian, spanish, french, german, or whathaveyou character in the game ... simply to remind people that in the future not everyone is a white american.  But here is the thing: they need to be good characters ... Jacob was just ... boring.  (at least Garrus, who was also boring, was a lizard man)

I hate that "you're racist and you just don't know it!" argument ... because there is no real defense against it.  I could just as well claim you are into beastiality, but just don't know it ... how could you prove me wrong?  When people go around looking for any reason to be offended, they will - by and large - be offended ... and what does that occomplish but to dig a deeper hole of resentment and distance between yourself and others?  If you're tired of seeing racists everywhere, stop actively looking for them and start living your life based upon how people actually treat YOU. (I have certainly had enough people in my life treat me like crap because they were simply pricks ... never had to pull out a race card to help me understand that)

I didn't like Kaiden or Ashley either, and neither of their characters were black.  Nor did I like Garrus, and he is about as institutional as you can get in the first game.  But, yes, throw a black woman into ME3, if she is interesting - and at least bisexual - I'd be happy to romance her. (well, I would if it weren't for being in a relationship with Liara.  I'd probably go ahead and romance her in the second playthrough, though ... unless they make Tali femmaneable; then it would have to wait until the 3rd)

Yep, I hate this argument too, because it shuts down legitimate discussion.  I can make all sorts of arguments about why I don't like Jacob, but as soon as someone says "well, you're a subconscious racist so your point of view is invalid" there's nothing I can say to counteract that.  It's one thing to call a person racist if they are actively making racist statements.  But claiming that they're racist based on zero evidence whatsoever is stretching it.

As far as Jacob goes, if this were real life he'd be the first person on my squad - he's level-headed, dependable, etc.  But this isn't real life, and compared to all the other interesting weirdos on the ship he is a bit of a snooze.

I'm quite sure the new most boringest character will be a human.  I've pretty much been "meh" about all the non-DLC human squadmates so far.  I guess Miranda is kind of interesting, but I wanted to punch her in the face the entire time.  Give me Kasumis and Zaeeds for ME3, Bioware.

What really hampers Jacob besides his underwhelming personality and background is that we don't learn much about anything from him. All he says is some brief and vague mention about the Corsairs and that's that.

Jacob is boring. And its not because he is "normal". Kasumi was also human and "normal" by the ME standards but i dont see people calling her bland.

And to the people who feels offended cuz jacob is black and therefore cannot have anything wrong about him without it being racist, i spit on you.
Be offended.
