When you first "steer her ship", and afterwards she asks you if you're bringing feelings into it, should you first say "No, its just for fun", and then down the road say otherwise?  Or no?

As I understand it, if you say that it was 'just for fun' you lose out some of the future ability to romance her. This might be addressed in the newest patch or be intended all along (so still there) - but just ask her about love...

The interactions/ability to meaningfully converse with your companions is so limited that missing certain options in any spot can stuff up the whole romance...especially for bloody fenris. haha

Saying it's just for fun pretty much ends the romance before it begins, though it tends to have some wonky effects to dialogue.

If you say it was just for fun, then it's just for fun. If you want a serious relationship, you have to suggest it to her right off the bat.

The "just for fun" option has the red broken heart next to it, as I recall. They're not trying to trick you with that; if you choose it, the romance will indeed end. As always, choose gold heart for romance...

(And I can't believe I just used a semicolon. Bet I used it incorrectly, too.)

DA2 is much better than DAO for romances. You know from the Heart and Broken Heart which options are part of the romance path and which will kill it. In DAO it was often pure guess work as to which option is part of the romance path and which will kill it. In DA2 if you mess up the romance, it's really your fault for not paying attention to the comversation symbols.

Although it is possible to mess up the Isabella romance if you go for the Merrill romance. Isabella will accept the Merrill romance and even warn you that if you break Merrill's heart, she will cut off your balls if your character is male. She is less graphic if your character is female. Isabella is very protective of Merrill. The problem is if you are nice to Merrill you can get the romance even though you do not select any of the Heart options. This may be a bug or not.

Haha true, there is that. But there's also an element of triggering their romance cutscene only after certain 'questioning beliefs'. If you trigger the fenris romance cut scene too early for example, it doesn't work. That said, it turned out not to work post-questioning beliefs anyway because I had ignored him all of Act 1.

But yeah, the whole merrill and anders romance over-riding all others isn't a bug. The other romance options are safe with fenris and isabela but once anders or merrill move in you can't get them out! haha. Other interesting things to know is that the Ander's romance can be ended by certain choices in the fade and the fenris romance can be cancelled by certain choices regarding a slave (haha I'm so evasive - no spoilers from me!)

Also I'm pretty sure that the just for fun option doesn't actually have a broken heart (but I might be just remembering it wrong). :)

Apparently there are a couple of romance dialogue options that don't show the correct tone icon. I'm not sure about Isabela but with Fenris the "so you're leaving" option in the aftermath is supposed to have a broken heart next to it instead of the arrow.

I didn't like the part about forcing the player into the Merrill romance if you were romancing both. In DAO you have to make a choice, it actually feels more appropriate that it would end up like JE, where you end up with both, because Isabella and Merrill seem so close, there's no reason to think they would mind the three of you being one big happy family. But if not, at the very least we should get to ultimately make a choice, rather than basicly having that choice made for us. But oh well :) .

Isabela makes that choice for all three. One of the best ways to solidify her true character, great writing job.

Yes, her outfit will change after she sleeps with you regardless of your dialogue choices.

That's how it was in my game, pre and post-patch... a broken heart would have made more sense, but on the other hand, it didn't end the relationship... unless there was some content I don't know about.  I know she visited Hawke after "All That Remains," and there was dialogue about their... exploits... when Sebastian was in the party.  On the other hand, I never actually completed the romance, so I have no idea if there's anything else I may have missed.

Oh, and Aveline commented on it during "the Long Road..."

That is a lie. If "What about love" isn't chosen the outfit doesn't change.

I liked "having to guess" as you put it. It made the romance a little more difficult. If you guessed wrong it wasn't the end of the relationship, well unless you said something like "we should just be friends" or "I like (another LI)" ut all in all it made it more realistic. You screw up in some points but always have a chance to make it better.

No you are incorrect. The armour is bugged usually and you have to use makers sigh to have it change, but it does change.

Like a dime store **** on a street corner, Isabela is too easy to romance out of all the toons imo.

This can happen, I've done it before.  You can have the one night stand with Isabela and still romance Merrill and get the shenanigans done with her.  Note that it can't happen the other way around.  Isabela will refuse to felicitate you after you felicitate Merrill.  Felicitating anyone not named Isabela will immediately cut Isabela's romance path off.

It's easy to get the hook-up, but to actually make it the full-fledged romance and not, as she puts it, a bunch of "rutting," it's probably the most rewarding/difficult path of them all.

I've romanced her multiple times thru play throughs.. She just doesn't have many instances, where she gives you a negative romance demerit,(Unless you really try to intentionally do so) so to speak, that cannot be overcomed easily.
Whereas with others, take Merril for instance, you can demean her about use of BM and take her into the Fade or on the Tome quests and easily have her rivaled.

Isabella is an easy lay with the right actions. But she DOES ask about love. By then, I had already wooed Isabella, and she attacked me later on (naughty elf!), and Isabella became a close friend and even mentioned the romance with Merrill, where Hawke was given a choice to "lie". At that point she threatens to castrate Hawke, despite her obviously knowing about the romance with Merrill. Pretty funny. I was hoping they'd both end up in Hawke's bed.

Or just a scene enjoying the two withouth using Ladyhawke, LOL!!!

In DAO if you guess wrong about Alistair you can get a romance with him wihtout realizing it and if you already have a romance with Leliana, the result is a no romance with either of them. You do NOT get a chance to make it better.

Actually that is the way it is supposed to be. While you can brush off Isabella, any type of friendliness will result in her jumping into bed with your character because that is the nature of Isabella's character. The start to her romance starts after you slept with her. If you chose it was the it was just fun dialog option, there is no romance and you can go on to Merrill. If you say it was more than a rompt in bed, that is the start of the Isabella romance. There is no second bedding but at the end game, there is a confession of True Love between the two of you. However a marriage to Merrill will abort the Isabella romance. Isabella will accept this and even tell your character that she will cut his balls off (for a male Hawke) if he ever breaks Merrill's heart.
