I always thought the reasoning for red lyrium sending people insane was simply because it was extremely concentrated. So like where normal lyrium that templars drink takes like a couple of decades to send someone crazy this one takes weeks or months.. But then there was the calling it was making so yeah The Old god relation is quite possible and I do believe that the dwarves of this thaig could indeed be the cause of the darkspawn

(husband)

To me the red lirium turning you bonkers seemed a bit of a rip off of the red kryptonite trope.

The nexus golem speaks of Amgarrak taping the stone or something like that, I took this to mean Amgarrak was recreating the experiments of the primeval thaig with lyrium/the stone. He also says how the stone lives under orlais which makes me think the next game takes place in orlais and its the location of an Archdemon/forgotten one/old one using the red lyroum to corrupt others through the lyrium. Possibly corrupting the divine herself, like Denethor, given the chantry's stupidity regarding the mage and templar rebellions

I feel like this is related somehow so I'll just leave it here:

Arcane warrior phylactery conversation:

What is this place? What happened here?

The images that come are slow, as the Presence must think back to a time it barely recalls at all. You see a place of serenity, where the eldest come to slumber and are visited by those who offer tribute to the gods on their behalf. The Presence's memories of what happened there are uncertain. There are flashes of violence, of war... but it is all too long ago. None of it is clear.

Was this a war with the humans?

The presence remembers the humans. This was a time even after the humans had come. It was they who had built this place, long before. Perhaps the war was with other humans. Perhaps it was with something else, something that killed both the humans and elves that were here. It is not clear.

How did you end up in this gem?

You see images of a great battle, elves and humans both screaming and attempting to flee from some terrible presence. What that presence was is blurry and lost to time. The Presence fled the destruction by using the Life Gem, escaping its body. It was sure that someone would come, to rescue it. But no one did. Not until now.

I'm thinking the presence isn't darkspawn and may have some deeper significance to Thedas.

It think the "terrible prescence" is the darkness Zenovia mentioned in Witch Hunt.

If DA ends with a war against primodial, darkness-incarnate crap like in Fable 3, I can tell you that I won't be happy. I get enough of "teh darknezz is teh true evilz OMG!" in other games.

After playing some games, like some of the Kingdom Hearts series, there are times I never want to hear the word "darkness" ever again.

hey there's nothing wrong with Kingdom Hearts! That game was built around fighting darkness right from the get-go. It's not like they made you fight some real villains and then said "Now your true foe is the darkness!!"

I'm with you on that.  Wanna go fight some darkspawn?

I was wondering if this Primal Thaig is the same that Maric and Fiona visited in the Deep Roads from the book "The Calling". This crossed my mind when playing through this area.

There's a Thaig under Ferelden that has a curious green lake and Andraste used to go down there to pray to The Maker, interestingly, this Thaig is free of Darkspawn...

Note: Curiously, Cadash Thaig also has green lakes but the Darkspawn are present there.

I'd say it's a Primeval-esque Thaig. Or, just very very clean for a lost current Dwarven society Thaig.
