Hi all,

Recently aquired the platinum edition of steam, somehow i never played the NWN series, despite extensively playing most other things in this genre.  Anyway last night i started the OC and decided it might be fun to blog my experiences/opinions as i progressed..

A Diary of a Call Girl Cleric - NWN2 Platinum

03/05/2011
Creating the character took some time, with the shear choice of feats and perks i was almost certain i would be chosing a few naff ones, read a couple of faq's to avoid this and so have born a fairly standard good cleric, kinda like Ainsley Harriet in a cassock, rp'ing should be simple and got the impression its a wellrounded campaign solo class.

Finally through creation i hit the fair, and it turns out i am Cormick re-born, whoever that is.  I must admit the movement is far jerkier than i expected, especially when turning, and the camera requires a fair bit of micromanagement..also combat so far consisnt of charging in and hitting things with very little input from me, and again the animation isnt as smooth as i would want...on the plus side the voice acting is good..

Overall the start seemed a lil cheesy, i mean a village fair, then getting woken in the night by a sudden sneak attack - i almost felt like i had played it before...and yet i have enjoyed it, and am looking forward to getting stuck in properly...also only just realised i had to learn my spells to use at the end.. All in all a positive start though :)

Day 2
Finally got into the good stuff, the game really improves when out of the initial area, my first 2 companions are likeable, and the rogue with the horns is kinda hot..
Essentially spent several hours of bashing things, leaving me half way through the quests at Fort Locke.
Some Observations:
-I didnt realise you would have to 'pull' groups of mobs to avoid extra aggro, as this didnt seem very 'D&D' but i can live with it.
-You dont get very many spells per battle as a cleric!  Lots of resting!
-I need some better items, i get the impression im making fights harder than intended.
-Havent bothered with the new crafting options available at  Fort Locke yet..

Overall i would give day 2 7/10 ;)

Neither did I, and I've been playing for two years and a half.

Day 3 & 4

I have learnt the value of saving regularly! As it can be pretty easy to underestimate a situation and suddenly be dead...not to mention nwn seem particularly fond of surprise attacks, leaving little prep time.
I have battled through to Neverwinter, and being the good cleric that I am, am now well into several quests for the local watch.

In addition have recruited a sorcerer, bard and paladin to my band, although the bard is so irritating I may not be able to use him.

Final observation, there are plenty of bugs in this game, not crippling, but irritating, in fact I stopped playing today because my party will no longer follow me! I have made sure puppet AI is off but they won't move! If anyone knows solution to that would be appreciated!

Ciao

First, make sure your game is updated (version 1.23). Try giving your companions the "attack nearest" command. Type V, W, E. Also, make sure the AI button is activated (lower-left corner, it should be in blue, not red).

Your cleric should have an excellent weapon right now.

Look at the travel map carefully.  One area appears with no fanfare at all.

I got it via steam, that would auto-update the patches?

Re: The weapon, finally after beating Bonegnasher i have returned with a watchmans club, which looks fairly decent! :)

Edit: Would this camera fix i have heard mentioned, be auto applied by steam?

When I logged in yesterday, this server was having some hiccups.  I didn't even see the two most recent posts;  I thought you were still down in Ft. Locke.

Though it appears the comment may still stand.  There's a nice flaming morningstar out there somewhere down around the first couple areas, that's unmatched at least until you reach level 10 (with crafting) or later.

You can also steal a nice sword from a merchant, right when you arrive at NW. And some companions can buff everyone's weapons.

Yep ive got the flaming morningstar, helped immensely with trolls, had nothing else which would finish them off :)

I also fixed the follow problem i was having, found a social command menu and could ask them to follow me.

Quick update from today:
I have driven ahead and have fought several Githyanki, Bishop has just joined the party, who i gather is a rather interesting character...

Is crafting a major part of this game, because at the moment im selling all these gems because there isnt anywhere to put them so they clog up my inventories..

LOL you know those annoying 0 level spells (ACID SPLASH) that don't seem to harm anyone once you get up there in levels. Works realy nice for that killing the Troll off move. I was doing one play through (only beat it once, but started it about a dozen times) and was out of spells on one troll except those 0 level ones and was like wow they work.

You meantion AI problems there, I notice some times my NPC's do tend to get stupid and just stand there or run off. WHen there doing the just stand there and not following I do a rotate through all the chars (click on them) and it tends to fix that. I just hate some times how slow they are to follow. I'm knee deep in combat and killed half the bad guys and half life gone and they finaly show up. That or there uber agro and go running off after some badguy I can't even see in my screen to get killed, before I can get there.

You do not have to craft. It is entirely optional.

Hi there - welcome to the wonderful worlkd of Neverwinter!

Re crafting - its by no means essential - one of the biggest things about this game, as you've probably noticed from the shear range of classes, skills, feats, equipment, spells etc. available is that there's a ton of choice to be had (I'm playing regular Guildwars sessions at the moment with friends, and really missing it!). If you want your character to focus on crafting - you can, but if you don't, you definitely don't need to - use the skill points on something else instead of crafting skills - what sort of character do you want? (Cooking skills would presumably be good for Ainsley!)

And re the surprise attacks -you don't expect the bad guys to all just wait around centre stage for you, do you? Neverwinter monsters are (sometimes) more clever than that :-)
See if you can boost up the skills of one of your characters that detects hiding & sneaking things - (Listen & Scan I think) - and think about sending a scout ahead of the party - rogues or rangers are best usually because of the skills they can get most cheaply.

Telling your party what to do can be tricky until you see all the options - press 'V' & see what other options you get - and if like me you're rubbish at learning key combinations to bark out commands to them all, find the command you want via 'V' etc. & drag it onto a quick bar instead.

Good luck!

As others have written, crafting is not necessary - although it can be useful.

*SPOILER*

As for the clogging up of your inventory with gems, the innkeeper at the Weeping Willow (if I recall correctly) sells a magic pouch - ideal for the storage of piles and piles of gems. Magic bags of all versions are very useful to keep your inventory under control.

This is a symptom of positional battle systems, by which I mean whenever you have a battle whilst there are other enemies in the area, there is a risk you'll end up fighting two or more lots at once. It's not very practical for a DM to keep track of things like this in D&D, but in principle similar situations could occur. It's not really that unrealistic if you think about it - in real life, false retreats and suchlike were often used to position enemies where you wanted them (think of it as "pulling" mobs) etc.

Still, good to hear you're enjoying the game. As regards crafting, it's far from necessary (I enjoy crafting in principle, but I just couldn't be bothered until the end of my game) but it should help. By L16 or whatever it is, you can craft things which by and large outstrip anything you'll find, though there are some enchantments which you can find but can't craft (e.g. a Strength bonus on weapons, though these sorts of things aren't really necessary since you can just use strength gloves or a belt, and the two won't stack). You may, though, find weapons which, say, stun or daze, and I don't think you can craft those. A +5 weapon with +1d6 each of two types of elemental damage is normal, though, and you can make it a material of your choice, too, like silver.

Thanks for the info guys, all good to know! :) I remember from previous games ive played that the 1st play-through of a rpg can be a great experience, and very memorable - so hope this tweaks a few fond memories for you all :D

Party set-up:
Sand has joined the crew, and i now have plenty of choice - although it looks like dependant on the quest i am on i will be forced to take someone -
This leaves me the following favored set-up:
Me - Cleric - Caster/Nuker build - I seem to pretty much do all the dps as far as i can see!
Kelgor - Tank - The fiesty dward gets beat on whilst i do the dps
Neeshka - Rogue - Great at finishing them off with that sneak attack, but dies...fast! Gotta have the unlock skills though really + she is kinda cute..
??? - I am thinking last spot may go to Sand/Qara because whilst i love the look of those bard buffs, i really cannot stand the Grobnar character! And the paladin seems a little limited..

Khelgar should do good damage too, this game has no tanks as in Dragon Age. Level up his STR and give him offensive feats (Weapon Focus, Specialization, etc).

Don't forget Cleave/GC and Touchness for him. I have his STR and CON pretty high from items allso. With a big old two handed axe to deal alot of damage.

Neeshka I tend to put a bow on her just for that reason, she tends to die or get realy hurt fast. So I keep her in the back with Qara most the time.

I found Sand to be a helpful companion. He adds some versatility and can deal out the damage too.

Neeshka does die a lot, and I personally found her pretty annoying, too. I've always prefered caster-types, so I think I rolled with Elannee, Khelgar and Sand most of the time (Qara being just a bit too irritating), but the AI doesn't handle them brilliantly, otherwise I might've gone for both Sand and Qara more often.

Quick update:
Had to have a couple of days off, in order to make peace with the GF, surprisingly she is not a fan of nwn2..

Day 4-5-6
Having appeased my girlfriend, i took the opportunity of her Zumba night to get straight back in and make some progress, I have charged into Act 2, which has been great so far, and feels to have a bit more direction than Act 1.
-aside- If i was to have any reservation for the storytelling, it would be that all my companions just seem to fall into my path and desperately want to follow/take commands from me, sometimes it just doesnt feel right for their character, or the reason isnt good enough, but im trying to ignore this.
-
Anyway as i was saying Act2 has a good strong set of quests to follow, and i have worked through the Collector (which unfortunately bugged at the end so I couldnt kill the other thief) and last night i finished the Trial - which i would say has been the most fun part to date...
-
My charisma is pretty neglected, so alas i took a pounding as the evidence was dealt out, and by the end i really wanted to give Torio a slapping, nevertheless the evidence carried me through, and i went to combat, which would have been simple apart from a slightly frantic ending when my opponent went all 'zerky on me

GF at a leaving do tonight, so the Lord of the Dead better watch out - also i am slightly annoyed that i seem to have built myself in such a way that i cant qualify for any of the prestige classes!!! I wanted to give the anti-undead class, cant remember what they are called, a go - but turns out you have to worship a certain deity! At the start of character creation it said deity wouldnt affect my gameplay!!

Also i would consider swapping out neeshka, but with the amount of locked doors/traps i really have to have someone with me that can deal with those..

Honestly, you don't need a rogue for anything. There isn't a trap dangerous enough to kill you outright, which is good given the AI's tendency to run right over them, and anything you could successfully pick the lock of can be bashed open instead. The only thing you're losing out on is that some items will break when you bash open a chest.

Also, if you can stand Grobnar, his Inspire Courage ability is very, very helpful.

Oh fair enough, wasnt aware of the other option...

Is there a fix to my deity issue so i can take a prestige class? or are any others worth it? :)
