Why do people hate ME1's elevators yet are completely fine watching a loading screen of an elevator?

I loved the feeling of utter seemlessness you had in ME1. From travelling deck to deck, to leaving the ship, everything flowed.

I think the people that hated the elevators either a) didn't realise they were masked loading times or B) wasn't complaining about the fact it was masked loading, but merely how long it took. So what, is there no way to a) make it shorter and B) keep it masked? And if that's the case, if it has to be shorter loading screens vs longer masked loading sequences, why not do both and make it an option? Give people the ability to play the game their way.

The thing is for a masked loading screen it didn't seem to even do its job as we'd still get "LOADING" messages while we were walking around. The only thing it did which was provide an opportunity to have characters interact with one another, Origins did better, without nary an elevator in sight.

It never mattered to me that people stopped talking before the elevators got where they were going. The news broadcasts and whatnot kept going anyways. But more important to me is the fact that I didn't find out that the elevators were hiding loading behavior until I read the early interviews about ME2 development where they talked about those who complained about it.

What it says to me: I never left immersion. That's a great thing.

I liked the elevators when they were actually talking (most the times they did not) and they were slow lifts which they did not need to be that slow considering the conversations finished 10 seconds normally before the lift stopped and started

That's because people hating the elevators usually didn't find out that those were actually loading screens.

I have never seen anyone say anything that indicates they did not know the elevators where there to mask loading. So that’s probably not it.

If only you had the option (and a notification) to skip those once the loading is done.

Anyone played Batman: Arkham Asylum? (which is btw on the Unreal Engine too)

I prefer loading screens, because it's easy enough to get rid of them on PC, where loading times are minimal.

All they needed to do was to add was an 'auto-end' to the end of the elevator as soon as the banter/loading had finished.

because people really want N64-esque loading times

not gonna happen (unless you play the PC version which is still slow compared to DA2)

There wasn't that much banter in the elevators. Maybe 1 out of every 4 or 5 had 2 lines. Overrated for the amount of time that they took. Cool concept, needed more chatter. Loading screens on the Normandy are preferable to the sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow lift.

I actually liked the elevators. Hearing news reports or a bit of squad banter.... and the awkward silence because nobody talks forever on an elevator. Disliked the loading scenes in ME though. The Kodiac ones were okay when dropping to a planet... but i didn't like the elevator loads on the normandy at all... would have rather watched the elevator myself like in ME1

At the very least i would be okay with elevators if we could run around inside them and not stand rooted to place.

It's just one of those unexplainable things. Personally I didn't mind the elevators sure it sucked when I rode all the way up to docking and forgot to buy Tali a new suit then had to run back down to get it but having no elevators sucked too and alot more. Personally I'd like some elevators, escalators, stairs, and air cars to get get to where I'm going for ME3 you know mix it up.

I wish there were a good way to have them let us read the codex or something during loading screens.

That is a great idea.

Any decent computer can run the loading screens in Mass Effect 2 within 1-3 seconds. Whereas the elevator ride times are set in stone and cannot be modified or shortened.

not seeing a loading screen should be the signature of ME.

Elevators were better than load screens. But I did curse when I had to go to the lower level in ME1 that elevator was so s-l-o-w.

the 1st few (10-15) times riding on the Elevators it was fine after a while when there is no new conversation or no news its and excruciatingly long process which seems unbearably long compared to ME2.

I didn't mind the elevators, and I liked the loading screens in ME2 as they reminded me of the loading screens from Homeworld 1 and Homeworld Catalclysm. However, I preferred the elevators because I never left the game.

Also, if people are so damn whiny about load times, then just buy a computer with four SSDs in a Raid 0.
