Why do people hate ME1's elevators yet are completely fine watching a loading screen of an elevator?

ok for those who are complaining that the elevators are bad because they are longer than loading screens are wrong. They are longer than the loading screens in ME2 because it's a different game.

I liked the lifts, but there were way too many of them in some places.

You know there are some pretty long elevator rides in Dead Space. But no one ****es about those.

They're also ALL OVER THE PLACE.

But I think it has more to do with people getting tired of taking the same elevator to the same location. Players dodn't complain about them in Dead Space because they know they're going someplace they've never been to; that anticipation makes the experience feel fresh (even though we spend more time riding elevators in Dead Space than we do in ME1).

This is why I didn't understand the loading screens in the Dantius Towers; they contributed to the "enclosed space" sensation of ME2, and an elevator sequence would have been unique enough to not drive people crazy, since it'd be a rare occurrence. Elevators in hub worlds are the problem; in those cases, giving us an option would be ideal. Putting elevators in mission levels where it's appropriate wouldn't be nearly as problematic, and it would retain the level's sense of scale/our immersion.

But you also have the Citadel Rapid Transport. Which makes the issue of riding in the same elevators over and over again kind of mute. Why wouldn't you just use those? They're faster then walking to the elevator and then using it. It's not like there's a shortage of terminals, pretty much every area had one. Complaining about elevators on the Citadel just seems pointless to me. You never had to ride through an elevator more then once.

The only exception is the Docking Bay elevator. Is it really that bad? It's not that long. Besides most of the time you got to here some news of whatever mission you had accomplished. So it wasn't such a terrible thing. I dunno I usually don't visit the Citadel more then 4 times so I don't end up riding through it much more then 10 times a playthrough probably.

So besides the Normandy elevator and Docking Bay elevator what's the problem? They got rid of the need for docking bay elevators in ME2. And replacing the Normandy elevator with a loading screen is fine (although it'd be nice if the process was a little faster or that the decks were connected by stairs).

I'll agree elevators in hubs (be it the Normandy or Citadel) aren't amazingly fun. Although like I said an elevator or two won't ruin things, and why not simply give people the option of skipping elevators for a loading screen? I dunno part of me really prefers listening to news in the elevators, since frankly what else can you possible do during a loading sequence that's immersive? Loading screens are painfully boring especially if they always show the same thing. Were it not for the random tips they'd become rather intolerable.

Also elevators are an ideal place to have "squad banter" since you can't interupt the dialogue by performing another action. Oh no the horror of having to listen your squadmates!

You can also show people nice views of big open areas (which everyone says is largely missing in ME2) with a glass elevator. It's really a missed opportunity.

Except they play the same news report for 20 times each elevator ride? I got sick of hearing "Sirta military operation was a blood-bath" for the nth time.

Except THEY'RE AS COMMON AS A NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK. If I'm done with ALL THE SIDE MISSIONS, THE SQUAD IS MUTE.

The squad was not mute in all the side missions in ME1. I fondly remember Wrex's jovial attitude about the Geth Incursion mission.

That was ME2.

He got ya there lunatic. Besides it seems the solution for fixing your complaint is obvious. Just add more squad banter. Same effect as a loading screen, but with the possibility of learning more about squad companions.

They take too long especially the one at the start of the Citadel.

I didnt mind the elevators/lifts in the levels, kind of liked them because of the banter/news.

HATED the normandy lift though.

The elevators take too long and the party banter stats looping soon enough.

I prefer speed.

You know the load screens don't load the game faster. It's always the same amount of time. Fine if your on a console but on PC it doesn't matter what kind of hardware you have it will always take a set amount of time.

What does that have to do with ME2 or 3?

Do you want to know something? The car ride with Kasumi at the beginning of her DLC was a loading screen. Go figure.

I think the dislike of elevators may be that they appear to be arbitrarily wasting your time whilst loading screens give a sense of it actually doing something.

I'm on the fence to be honest, if they expanded the banter so you rarely got the same line twice I might prefer the elevators as it gives a sense of continuity to the world.

Exactly.

Look the point is not wanting ME1's elevators back, the point is I want hidden loading as opposed to loading screens.

It can be done, and they should do it is all I'm saying.

I'm referring to the elevator conversations. I.E. If I'm done with the side-missions, I have nothing but news broadcasts.

Reading comprehension difficult? Let me re-iterate. If I'm finished with the side-missions, Elevator rides are nothing but looping news broadcasts.

So? Loading screens are nothing but a looping vroooooooooooooooo over and over again. That gets annoying.

Besides don't talk to me about reading comprehension. I just told you the solution. Add more banter, and add more news broadcasts.

Loading screens take just as long, and use a just as if not more annoying sound during the loading.

Not to mention I just told you, the car ride with Kasumi at the beginning of her DLC was a loading screen. A hidden one. Same concept as the elevators but... Wait for it... Improved!

(Potentially variable) looping news is worse than the (100% consistently) same looping loading screen?

Logic comprehension difficult?

Loading in ME2 is a lot faster than the elevator rides from ME1.

At least on the PC.

Sequels tend to have that advantage.

And this isn't about the elevators, it's about hidden loading.

Jeez.

The ME2 loading screens would be even faster if it didn't force playing them in entirety.
Instead they've made it so you have to sit through the entire thing pointlessly... the loading is now done. This is at first just as bad as having to wait for the rest of an elevator ride after the new floor has loaded up... but then it's actually worse because with an elevator, at least you could hear a different news story from last time, or Wrex and Kaidan could say something that makes you smile.
Instead, it's the SAME loading screen... exactly the same... same sound... same everything... one-hundred goddamn percent.
And the level already loaded 10 seconds ago.

Once again I argue that in elevators you could admire the... physical design of your squad.
There is very little visually pleasing about these new loading screens.

Like hearing how the "Sirta Foundation" operation was a "massacre" twenty times helps with the immersion, despite me just hearing the broadcast five minutes earlier?

Like hearing that same, low, buzzing sound every time I want to go to the normandy? I find that more annoying.

And yet again you are completely ignoring the solution that was pointed out.

The real question is...
Why are you using a Citadel elevator twenty times that far in to the game after the Sirta mission?

If the answer is that you're just playing the game 20 times in a row, then what do you expect?
Really... what the hell do you expect? Lol.

Also... you know there's this thing called mute.
Go in to elevator... use it... leave elevator... sound on again.
Obvious solution is so obvious.

The faster loading in ME2 is due to engine optimizations. Same could have been applied to other methods of loading while not disrupting the flow of the game. Elevators and decontamination are just 2 of those possible hidden loading screens.

Uh, to see if the squadmates actually have **** to say? Apparently, they're mute if I'm done with every mission. I shouldn't have to waste hours of my limited time in-game just to hear said banter.
