Hi - I've searched the forums and seen some other users experiencing the same apparent problem.  My specs are above minimum (according to http://www.systemreq...tslab.com/cyri/ "Can You Run It?" and eye-balling), albeit I am on a laptop which I know is technically not supported.

1.
1. What version of the game are you playing: physical disc or digital download (along with which vendor)?
Digital download (freebie from anniversary/Dragon Age 2)
           * Version Information: MassEffect2.EXE v1.02
2. System Details
           * Processor / Clock Speed / RAM:
Intel® Core™ i5 CPU       M 460  @ 2.53GHz
2522 MHz
3.80 GB

           * Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
1.00 GB
[blank]
           * Sound Adapter / Driver Version
Speakers and Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC)
6.10.6292.0
           * Operating System (and service pack, if applicable)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium   (6.1.7600)
           * DirectX Version
DirectX 10.0  (Mar2009) or later

I read on other post responses that not having DX9c installed could be an issue - went to the MS site and downloaded/installed it, but as you see above the config utility is still showing 10.0 ("or later") - is this potentially the problem and if so, any recommendations to fix?

Thanks!

The OS will report the newest Direct3D; the game will attempt to access the Dx9 versions of certain dlls that don't even exist in Dx10 / Dx11.

Refer to the balance of Pacifien's description of what goes into a problem report:

"Details about your problem.
1. What is the nature of the problem you are seeing?
Example: No sound during Morinth/Samara battle.
2. When did the problem start occurring?
Example: Every time you perform a certain action, after a certain number of hours of play, after downloading the lastest DLC.
3. Where does your problem occur?
Example: Is the problem happening for a specific mission, planet, or throughout the entire game?
4. What are the steps in replicating the problem?
As much as possible, try to describe exactly what you were doing when the problem occurred. Example: Trying to respec your squadmates with the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC.
5. Have you modified your game in any way?
Using a save game modification can create problems for your game in unexpected ways. Bioware cannot provide support for issues that may relate to a save game editor, but your fellow forumites might."

Yep, sorry -

select Play from the opening menu, goes to black screen and hangs permanently (task manager to kill).
Has happened since install, never worked.
No modifications.

And thanks for the dx info - makes sense.

I got it to work for me.

On the launcher i had to configure all of my settings off default. I had to manual adjust everything off default or detect. So it ran for a few minutes. I have to go to work, so i dont know if it will crash later or not. At least i got to see the intro. lol.

Besides Pacifien's pinned message regarding problem report formatting, I've posted this sort of information in various of the self-Help Tech forums on the Social Site:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/1537629

Pacifien's post that the OP question seemed to show hadn't been examined from start to finish, is here:

Although I cannot recall your own thread, that is the one that your own problem report information belongs in, if you also only quick-scanned the stickies on top.  (Edited: the rest of the form hasn't helped me, personally, to recognize any particular source for the error, although I am only one of many readers here.)

Yes, that appears to be the case for your question as well ~~ not wearing your visual correction when you looked at the top of the forum.

Avel, I'm afraid I'm not sure what's going on either. About all I can suggest is the standard "see if you have any updated drivers." (I suggest looking on the website of the laptop manufacturer. I'm not sure if the mainstream Catalyst drivers are compatible with mobility Radeons, and even if they are, you might lose any customized functions the manufacturer put in.)

Also, I believe ME2 has a logs folder at My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\BIOGame\\Logs - mine's empty, I think it may only be for crashes. But if there are any files there they might be helpful.
