Far more poeple out of 3+ million, loved it?

Metacritic. One has a high rating.. one has a three. Guess which is which.

Either way they fling the numbers around, DA2 will not outsell DA:O. Which is bad news for a supposed 'sequel'. Usually sequels are supposed to outsell the first one. ME2 outsold ME1.

just sayin'

They will still do a DA:3 .

Its not a total failure.  They just made a mistake catering the game to an audience who does NOT play rpgs to begin with.

They will take the BEST elements of DA:3 and combine them with elements of Origins they took away and DA:3 will be a better game.

That's particularly true when one of the stated goals was to make DA2 appeal to the CoD crowd as well as the CRPG crowd.  If that had happened even a little, DA2 should have easily outsold DAO (just as ME2 has outsold ME).  Frankly just looking at the raw week by week sales trends, I'd say that the curve matches that of a failed game.  Just my opinion but there it is.

This means that DA2 is not selling as well as they might want you to believe.

Though when they start giving away incentive games (*cough* Mass Effect 2 *cough*) and slash the price by half or more even numbers 'sold' stop mattering. Hell, why don't they start selling Dragon Age 2 out of gumball machines for a quarter? Or package it with Happy Meals? Then they can say that DA2 sold -ten- million copies.

Agreed. Game already comes bundled with another, better title. Also, price cuts.

Something fishy must be going on.

EA makes multiple mentions about metacritic scores in this conference call.  Metacritic scores matter to them.  So if you don't think they should be taken seriously, you might want to take it up with EA.

After Origins and Mass Effect, it's bad enough that we discuss whether BioWare's last big title is, or isn't, a total failure.

I'm not so sure.  DA2's sales trend DO indicate that if not a total failure, then it's far close to a failure than a success (and matches the curves of other 'failed' sequels such as Master of Orion 3).  Bioware has to know that there won't be the huge influx of pre-orders for a would-be DA3 that there was in DA2 to cushion the numbers.  I wouldn't be at all suprised if the DA franchise got shelved after a couple of DLCs.

I do think metacritic scores should be taken somewhat seriously by the game developers and companies.  As a gamer, and not a developer or someone who works in the industry, I couldn't care less.

You guys are ridiculous trying tos pin the new that DA2 has sold 2mil+ in about as some sort of 'proof of failure'. My god, it's hialrious how desperate you guys are to eb somehow 'vindicated'. Once again, I'm proven right.

I guarantee youn that more people avoided preordering DA2 because they hated DA1 then people avoided preordering DA2 after loving DA1 and thinking that DA2 would suck. So, I say DA1 has cost DA2 at least one million sales. Damn that stupid DA1, DAMN IT TO HELL!!

DA2 sold 2mil+, and let's watch the haters hate! HA!

p.s. People forget that most of these sales likely came before the stupid ME2 deal (which was more of a way to pimp ME3 than DA2, trust me on that0.

HA! HA! HA!

I can't wait tom hear the cries of 'DA2 is a failure despite selling 3mil'.

LMAO

Man, you guys are nitpicky. Why do you care so much about how many units are sold?

Are you trying to justify your like/dislike of the game?

It's no surprise that the game sold 2 million units. What's surprising is how much controversy the number stirs up. As a gamer, what effect does it have on how much you like the game? Who cares?

The release didn't say that more than 2million were SOLD only that more than 2 million were SHIPPED. Big difference.

I think they will probably break even for DA:2 I don't think it will be shelved. I think there will a 3rd one but it won't be released for awhile.

EA kept the Sims Online running for years and they lost way more money on that fiasco.

I actually played Origins because it was recommended to me. I think if they do a superb DA:3 it will be the same way.

There are some developer posts that say this wont be the last game. I have faith they will learn from the mistakes they made.

Only matter of time before DA2 surprases overrated tripe like KOTR, and past it's time like BG1.

Another win for the good guys!!!

yes, it does say that it sold over 2 million units.

It says that EA has shipped several titles that have sold over a million copies.  Then it goes on to say that Crysis 2, Dead Space 2, and Dragon Age 2 each sold over 2 million copies.

If it were only talking about shipped copies, why wouldn't it say that EA has shipped 2 million copies instead of differentiating between shipped and sold?

Here is where I agree with you. KOTOR was stupidly overated. Rest I am not so sure.

Ask yourself this. Which version of "sold" looks better to shareholders.

Sorry Bobsmith, but EA can't lie to shareholders without risking major trouble. They can use doublespeak with csutoemrs (to a point about sales) but not with shareholders.

I stand corrected then.  Still 2million for DA2 considering the success (and thus preorders) of DAO is not very impressive ESPECIALLY when we see that BW is now cutting the price on DA2 drastically and bundling it with other games (ME2).  This is the classic part of the life-cycle of a failed release (and a release can still "fail" and make money if it failes to meet company/corporate expectations...and I am willing to take it as a given that DA2 will fall woefully short of expectations).

True, but they can (and many companies DO) shade the truth or hide it in confusing 'legal' or 'corp' speak.  As long as the facts are technically correct, the SEC will look the other way.

-Polaris

Edit PS:  Except for very rare cases, the only people that a corporation can't mislead without risking DIRE trouble are the shareholders on it's board of directors.

It's not lying it's just a bit of sleight of hand to pad the figures.

If I say that I've sold 2 million games I don't have to tell people that 1.5 million of those are still on store shelves for instance.

They're "sold in" numbers. They dont say anything really. Same thing as saying shipped. Customers did not purchase 2 million copies of DA2.

Exactly. Their goal is to shape the announcement so it'll look as positive as it can to shareholders and potential investors.
