I'd rather believe in VGChartz than numbers from the same company that made the game. I mean...seriously folks? They could say they sold 5 millions. They want to sell the game. Saying that it sold less won't help.

yes, it does say that it sold over 2 million units.

It says that EA has shipped several titles that have sold over a million copies.  Then it goes on to say that Crysis 2, Dead Space 2, and Dragon Age 2 each sold over 2 million copies.

If it were only talking about shipped copies, why wouldn't it say that EA has shipped 2 million copies instead of differentiating between shipped and sold?

Its the whole "sold in" versus "sold through" deal. The EA release says this:

EA shipped seven titles in the fourth quarter that have already sold  in over 1 million units each, life to date. Crysis® 2, Dragon Age™ 2, and Dead Space™ 2 each sold in more than two million units.

DA2 has "sold in" over one million units. Yet if you look at what EA CEO John Riccitiello said in February with respect to sold in versus sold through numbers with respect to Dead Space 2, its the sold through numbers that matter most:

When listing the publisher’s core properties, Riccitiello explicitly excluded Dead Space from the list.

“It will probably take Dead Space 3 to get into that 5 million core,” he said. He did confirm the recently released Dead Space 2 is selling like hot cakes, though, after early reports of double first week sales on the
original.

“Sell-in numbers can be a little misleading,” he mused, preferring to talk “sell-through” figures: Dead Space 2 has seen “100 percent growth” on its precursor in “a number of weeks”.

Listening to that conference call though, they seemed more excited about the monetization of the DA facebook game than DA2.

The release didn't say that more than 2million were SOLD only that more than 2 million were SHIPPED. Big difference.

You're wrong.  They very deliberatley say "sold in" repeatedly for all of those numbers.  "Sold in" doesn't mean the number of purchases made by customers.

This is how SOLD is interpreted by a Publisher.

Man, you guys are nitpicky. Why do you care so much about how many units are sold?

Are you trying to justify your like/dislike of the game?

Nope. I've seen many terrible games sell well and great games not sell at all.

I'm just interested in reading about sales for DA2 and wondering what effect it will have on the future.

Best post in this whole topic.  The head of EA himself says the numbers he gave are misleading.

How did it sell another 1 million faster than when it was originally released?

OK maybe I'm wrong. I'll admit that. So then what's the difference between "shipped" and "sold in"? Since they differentiate between the two terms.

In addition, I found this, which includes DA as a future IP on the shelves:

"Sold in" sounds more like "sold" than "shipped" does.

Sold in is the term you use when you are trying to pad the figures. Shipped is the term you use when you are being honest.

As far as I'm aware they are interchangable but used with different terms.

Sold in vs sold through
Shipped vs sold

MyKingdomCold,

Hey, we all learn something every day. Why use the term Sold-in (as in sold to retailers) rather than "Shipped" (which is really the same thing)? Because most people will stop reading at the word "sold" and assume it means "sold through" (as in purchased from the retailer without return).

Bioware isn't lying....precisely....but they are severely shading the truth IMO.

shipped can mean how many units have left the factory (or saw, a digital copy left a server)

sold usually means how many units they sold to retailers. Its how I see, could be wrong, but that link above to interpret corp speak is a bit useful.

Not a problem.  It was a totally understandable error on your part (and as I said one that I think that EA hopes the casual reader will make).

If you want to have a honest opinion, go to your local gamestore. Ours has plenty of copies left and when you ask the people working at Gamestop for a good RPG, they recommend waiting for The Witcher 2; when asked about Dragon Age: Rise to Power, they say it's less of a RPG and more of an action adventure thingy.

Actually Shipped and sold to retailers is the same thing. The real sales are sales to consumers. Because the retailer  'buys' the units on 'short term loan' basis.

Haha, why even talk about this. Blade Runner , when it came out was considered failure. Couple of decades later , its one of the most beloved movie and undeniably financial success. Quite a few people still bought, buy since it became available again Planescape Torment. Game was anything but $$$ success on scale to satisfly todays mega publishers. Anyway, its still there, still considered one of best if not best, and people still play it 12 years later. How many will play DA2 2 years from now? My guess is not many because its not very good game, but I might be wrong so to each his own.

They're "sold in" numbers. They dont say anything really. Same thing as saying shipped. Customers did not purchase 2 million copies of DA2.

Exactly. Their goal is to shape the announcement so it'll look as positive as it can to shareholders and potential investors.

I can find no mention on the internet of "sold in" meaning shipped. If you can produce an example, please do.

The publisher AND the Developer are both bankrupt. Sales mean nithing now. Its too late.

A few thoughts:

Are people sure the DA:O numbers of 5 million are Sold Through rather than Sold In? I mean, if these numbers are allegedly suspect, you could say the same about DA:O's numbers if they came from the same source.

If the games aren't returnable to the publisher, then it doesn't matter, except in the very long term, but those effects won't be immediately apparent.

And I think the problem with the sales comparisons is that people try to "frame it" based on their own suppositions. I think a lot of the people who disliked DA2 are afraid that the masses may actually like it (and thus marginalize their own opinions), and thus fear this will be the future direction of the franchise. Already, I see critics saying the numbers are "suspect", even though they are obligated to follow GAAP, SEC rules, and other things that could get them in serious legal trouble if they are deceptive. (And again, if we assume that the 5+ million sales of DA:O were also referenced in sales reports, why would they "lie" for one and not the other).

I've got no problem with being critical of DA2, but I do have a problem with the same people over and over posting sales figures and either hoping it takes or showcasing glee at the prospect, because it just seems petty and based more on emotion than actual search for the truth.

This a report to shareholders and the financial community at large. As opposed to lying to consumers, lying in this case would be very bad juju.

I've never heard a 5 million figure for DA. Only between 3-4 million.
