In fairness, nobody should really care about that unless they're an investor. As gamer's we're usually more interested in how the game is selling to actual gamers, not retailers at wholesale.

Actually, as a gamer, I'm only interested in the copy that was sold to me.

Not necessarily Jack.  If EA stated that they have sold 2 million copies, it isn't the retailers that have sold the product.  Also, if I had to put a hyped product on sale and bundle it to boost numbers, then I would consider that to be a failure.

But to each their own.  I guess DA2 is so popular that it is flying off of the shelves.  Oh wait, nevermind...

Keep drinking that kool-aid. This is hardly the first time an "earnings report" has substituted one word or phrase for another to spin things in a more positive light.

In fairness, as far as how much money EA makes, copies shipped is copies sold, because EA sells to retailers.

As a gamer, I couldn't care less about how many folks I never met bought this or that game. If it's a game/franchise I care for, I want the studio in question to sell enough so I can get more of said franchise.

Yes, I'm just selfish that way.

Glad you beat me to that. At least in single player games. If this were an MMORPG how many were sold to others could affect your playing experience.

Then why are you in this thread?

Edit: question goes for Persephone and Cutlass jack as well. Is it just a fanboy reactionary response, rushing to Bioware's defense at the first sign of trouble even though you don't actually feel personally committed to the actual subject matter?

EA have already attempted to inflate grades for DA2.... and justified itself by saying oddly that everyone did this.... Do not be too quick to believe naively what a company says about its game in public. Instead, look the other sites, what you want, the ones you like, you trust but stay distant with claim's companies like thoses of EA.

Note that I have nothing against EA, I just never forget when a company misleads or attempts dishonest things. I become more cautious.

The Sequel Celebration started in April. This earning report was about Sales till the end of March.

And when Gabriel Knight II came out, Sierra bundled it with GK1 for a while too. (And those CHANGES...going from 2D point&click to FMV,,,,,,now THOSE were ACTUAL changes!) Just an example.

Because my interest is not limited to my role as a gamer.

I don't get the price reduction bashing, most EA games get cheap really fast. So did ME2 for example and that sold bajillions.

Sold is sold. Its an earnings report. Lying about earnings is generally frowned upon by Stockholders, and you know, the IRS.

Here's the actual quote from the article, in case, you know, people were interested in what is reported EA actually said:

As part of its announcement of results from the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, EA revealed that Crysis 2, Dragon Age 2, and Dead Space 2 have all surpassed two million in sales. Four other EA titles releasing in the fourth quarter went over one million, and several other milestones were reached:

FIFA 11 has sold over 12 million units
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has sold over seven million units
Medal of Honor, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and Madden NFL 11 have each sold over five million

Source: http://www.gameinfor...lion-sales.aspx

These are the words that are coming out of someone's mouth who is reporting what EA told them.

You can either believe it, or not believe it.Those are really the only two options here. Maybe EA should release the long-form birth cert- I mean, numbers.

According to most sources ME2 sold fewer copies than Dragon Age Origins. DAO is Bioware's best selling game.

Indeed, sold is sold.

Likewise, sold in is sold in.

Logic is wonderful, isn't it?

Did you bother to read the report yet?

Maybe you should learn the difference between the actual report and a third party paraphrase.

But you see, this is why they do this kind of crap. Call it copies "sold in" in the report, and then you have hundreds of game "journalists" parroting it as "copies sold" in their magazines rags and blogs.

Doesnt matter how much you fanatics think you scored a win, the issue is they claim it hit/sold 1 million mark in 2 weeks of release (includes preorders of around 400-600k units) and now they saying in the remaining less than week and half they have sold another million (without the benefit of pre-orders boosting that extra million). It reaks of shifting/dumping off copies on retailers of which I am sure just like most business do mine included, big stock shifts generally go hand in hand with credit notes for returns at a later date for unsold stock (retailer end).

Shifting and dropping stock on retailers is all well and good but in general it comes back and bites you in the arse at a later date.

It's not an earnings report.  It was just a statement.  It said nothing about how many copies are in stagnation held by retailers.

DAO, not bundled or price drop correct?
ME1, not bundled or price drop correct?
ME2, not bundled.  Not sure on the price drop, anyone let us know?
DA2, bundled, huge price drops ("sales").  I want to know how many copies the retailers have actually sold.
You can say that since EA sold copies to retailers then they have made their profitt.  This is true, except that there can be returns based on stagnation and there can be consequences that hurt their reputation.

I'm not sure how this is going to turn out.  Time will tell.  It is still early to judge by numbers.  I read the weekly sales thread and check the sources, but I take that with a grain of salt as well.

EA have not even actually confirmed that DA2 has sold 1 million copies.

The words used were 'hit the 1 million mark'. The words from this report are '2 million sold in'.

I'm sorry, where did you get the idea that I was referencing the actual report, and not the article about the report?

Was it where I said: "what is reported EA actually said"

Or was it where I said: "These are the words that are coming out of someone's mouth who is reporting what EA told them. "

Maybe you should learn how to read before responding in anger?

HY-OH!

Take a breather, man. People are taking this waaaaaaay too personally.

Until they have to buy it back. Then it becomes money spent, not money made. :-)

Dead Space 2, by all accounts, was phenomenal. I don't think they expected that many. Crysis 2 is probably underperforming, but I think they're treating it still as a work-in-progress (I don't know if it has enough appeal to break away from the PC).

Dragon Age II seems to be on the lower side of "smash-hit." This number means they should sell at least two million, eventually. Like I posted earlier about this, somewhere, hopefully some patches and DLC and maybe later promotions can get the number closer to 3, maybe enough to get a real expansion. Having to wait for full games blows.

Fascinating....

If this were a thread about DAO 2 months after its release we'd have "YAY!" and "Go Bioware!" etc. answers throughout this thread.

Because if it's something we like, why analyze the possibilities of a Sales Report being written in the most positive way possible?^_^

Not true. They said sold (not shipped).

"BioWare today confirmed Dragon Age II has sold - not shipped - over 1 million copies worldwide in less than two weeks."

Wrong.

Here is the exact quote released by EA:

EA shipped seven titles in the fourth quarter that have already sold in over 1 million units each, life to date. Crysis2, Dragon Age 2 and Dead Space 2 each sold in more than two million units.
