Why care about what genre the games fit into?

I know I don't care about how the games are categorized.

But if it's a problem, lets just make a brand new genre!

Notice the group he was speaking to:

Speaking during an investor Q&A today, Riccitiello explained that Mass Effect 3 will boast greater mass appeal than its two predecessors.

It's just something to make their investors happy. I doubt it has any real substance to it - basically "hey investors, ME3 isn't going to be a giant flop so don't sell our stock." Investors = people who don't play games and probably have no idea what the hell mass effect actually is.

As usual, it is apparent that NO ONE AT EA IS LISTENING TO THE FANBASE.

How do you get that? If they said "we are stripping everything and starting over" I'd be pissed but that's not the case here.

But it is an RPG, you level and you basically play a role at which you can decide your fate. Of course, ME1 was far more "RPG" than shooter, and ME2 totally changed that around. But it still has plenty of RPG elements. I read an article stating they know that ME2 fans said it was too much of a shooter, so they'll be bringing back a lot of its root RPG elements in ME3.

It's either a last minute "We need multiplayer to have market retention" or they simply need more time to make a great game. They are probably also trying to shoehorn Move and Kinect support.

I'll pause my hype meter for now. Let's wait for E3 to see if the changes are for the better or for the worse of the franchise. Let's hope it's for the best.

I'm pretty sure it's just him saying in investor-talk that Mass Effect 3 is going to sell well.

I fail to see where people are getting the rich and complex RPG from. ME1 was more of a shooter than an RPG when it came to inventory and powers and such. Same with ME2. But what I think makes it a good RPG, is the character developments, and the character interactions and the choices. Not the silly inventory that just felt like a time grinder for me.

You know. The Role Playing part of an RPG.

Well put, SWM

The way I read it if apply my twisted logic is:

"Genre equivalent to shooter meets-RPG," he said, "and essentially address a much larger market opportunity than Mass Effect 1 [More RPG>less shooter] and Mass Effect 2 [more shooter>less RPG] began to approach.

To me this sounds like bad news.

That "nothing" can be a source of news on slow-news days B)

Edit: darn 24-hour news cycle, full of fluff and sensationalism for ratings.

They've stated that there will be no multiplayer, which i'll be using as my security blanket. Because multiplayer?

No thanks.

There were no plans for multiplayer before the game got delayed.

Honestly, they've been pushing this action shpooter thing forever now. Exactly what market do you think they're trying to approach? I can tell you right now it's one that won't be swayed by a deeper RPG/story/customization experience.

It means everything!

And nothing.

It is life! It is death...

It is light! And darkness!

It is our savior! And our destroyer...

It...is.

I'm not so sure about that. At the end of the day, EA calls the shots.

If they want ME3 to have multiplayer because it has now become a standard in the video game market, Bioware will have to make one. Even if it means that the singleplayer experience is getting less attention or that they are simply making a rush job at creating the MP component.

I mean, it's not hard to create the basic mechanics. Third person shooter, perk system, cover based gameplay, all the standard modes and voila! You have a technically sound multiplayer experience. What remains is actually to make it interesting. Copying is easy. Creating something that his you own and truly stands out in the sea of multiplayer shooter is no easy feat.

Can't wait for E3 to see how ME3 is shaping up. I hope we are not in for a giant disappointement. ME is probably the only franchise I care enough about to even have this argument. I kind of wish I didnt care. ^_^

Putting in multiplayer would ruin the series! I'm happy BioWare decided NOT to put in multiplayer :)
