Kind of a cryptic sentence he said to be honest. And in all likelihood an excuse to the investors to ease them on competing with the tough competition this year. Hell, the man might just say that he could eat locomotives and crap lightning if he thought it might make the investors wallet-happy. As most decent CEOs do really. Still, he has to know this won't exactly make too many consumers overly happy.

Better to be ambiguous or cryptic than truthful sometimes, though. He could always turn into another popular publisher head figure. Like this guy!

I think what they mean by that is the games Shooter Elements wil be top notch, AAA shooter gameplay that will appeal to the COD and Gears crowd, while the RPG elements will provide top notch RPG gameplay that will still hold appeal with the longtime Bioware fans, as well as RPG fans in general.

Basically "A larger market" can go both ways. There may have been a considerable piece of the RPG market that didn't buy ME2 because they were turned off by the lack of RPG elements.

The EA effect on Bioware is doing it's the best to drive away/worry their longtime fanbase, what a pity.. Didn't they just promise to increase the RPG elements, isn't this focus on adding a new market what turned DA2 into a low point of that franchise.

To some investors the delay of ME3 might seem like a bad sign, since that's just one less big title EA will have out this holiday to sell. Though I'd have to say anyone actually worried about profits is an idiot. Umm Battlefield 3 hello? I mean geez if there's a game poised to sell like hotcakes that's it.

Exactly. They're delaying ME3 because they don't need the revenue this year.

What most people think of when they hear "broader market appeal" they think "homogenized." Sometimes that's a valid criticism, but just because something is "accessible" doesn't mean it's crap. I for one do believe the DA2 team made some very poor choices in trying to make their game all things to all people. That it was a sloppy, rushed mess (just like Arrival) didn't help. ME3 isn't going to be a sloppy, rushed mess. It's going to be a great game. Hopefully, it will be a legendary game.

Indeed they said there would be more RPG elements so I'm not sure why "broadening the market" would suddenly contradict that. Like I said, if you read too much into this.. you're going to get yourself worked up over "what ifs" that are probably not true. Pushing the release date back is good, business sense that shows they aren't rushing their product. We should he celebrating now, not biting our nails with anxiety.

This deserves to be repeated.

I hope that we're taking the CEO out of context. BioWare please comment. When I read this, I was ready to cry.

I'm so sick of seeing all the worried people about how "their" game is going to be dumbed down for "COD players". Seriously grow up and have some faith in the company that delivers you games like Mass Effect, KOTOR, and many others. Sick of this crap.

I just hope "tweaking for a larger market" doesn't mean giving the game a DA2ing.

I'm skeptical about this. I like Bioware but whenever EA starts meddling with development directly it tends to turn whatever it touches into poop.

Here's to hoping I'm wrong about that.

“One of the things that Ray Muzyuka and the team up in Edmonton
have done is essentially step-by-step adjust the gameplay mechanics and
some of the features that you’ll see at E3 to put this in a genre
equivalent to shooter-meets-RPG, and essentially address a much larger
market opportunity than Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 began to
approach.”
“We’re huge believers in the IP and are purposefully shifting it to address a larger market opportunity.”

                                                                                                                        John Riccitiello - EA boss

THIS IS THE END OF THE FRANCHISE.
THIS IS THE END OF MASS EFFECT.
THIS IS THE END OF BIOWEA.
ALL MY HOPE FOR ME3 NOW ARE ENDED.
ME3 WILL BE WORSE THAN ME2, FAR WORSE THAN DA2.
THE NEW EA = OLD EA.
SOON BIOWEA WILL BE IN GOOD COMPANY WITH MAXIS, BULFROG, ORIGIN, WESTWOOD etc.. etc...
DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO THIS PEOPLE.
I ADORE ME1.
BUT MASS EFFECT  WAS LOST AFTER THE FIRST ONE.
DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO THIS PEOPLE.
GIVING MONEY TO EA MEANS ALLOW THEM TO KEEP ON DESTROYNG BRANDS, DEVLOPERS AND FRANCHISE.
PLESE DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO THIS PEOPLE.
ME3 DELAY IS SIMPLE STARTEGIC MOVE: NOW THEY FEAR UNCHARTED , GEAR AND newCOD.
DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO EA.

I just love how people calls it "dumbing down a la DA2" when ME3 doesn't have the same team as DA2, isn't doing the same kind of overhaul as DA2 and has been thought out since before ME2 was released, while DA2 had, what, 18 months in development?

The inablity to think outside the box here is laughable.

Every time a developer starts to use words like streamlining, broader appeal, more focused and such you know it's time to start to worry...contemporary examples are Crysis 2, DA2...

You're right. It has the same team that "dumbed it down" from ME1. And the only thing that has been "thought out since before ME2 was released" is the overarching story (i.e. where it begins and where it ends, nothing in between) and probably some technical aspects of the engine they identified for continual improvement. Gameplay? No. Patently not. How do I know? Because Christina Norman's blog, and GDC presentations. That's how.

"We're huge believers in the IP and are purposefully shifting it to address a larger market opportunity."

And yet again I find myself asking the question I've posed in these forums numerous times.  Who is this larger market?  Who exactly are these people that EA/Bioware are gunning (pun intended) for?  Are they going to drop out of the sky on ropes? Are they going to teleport and spawn magically in gamestores, ambushing store clerks from behind the counter?  Who are these people and where are they coming from?

What else can you possibly do to "tweek" this franchise at this very late point in the series?  This is the 3rd game wer're coming up on here, if you screw with this franchise any further you're not only running the risk of alienating the fan base, but seriously confusing any new gamers that might be interested in coming on board.

ME1- RPG
ME2- Action/RPG
ME- 3rd Person Shooter

You've already re-booted the series once IN-THE-MIDDLE of the trilogy by killing the protagonist, bringing him back to life, nerfing classes, gutting exploration, cutting the limbs off of the skill trees, and finally removing role playing elements.  Now  you're proposing to re-boot or tweek it further?  For what?!  And what could EA hope to gain by changing things up AGAIN?  Do they honestly believe that a flood of people are going to just jump in for chapter 3?

What the hell is goin on?

I'm following ME3 development from the beginning. Up until yesterday, I was at ease as to how the franchise was going (especially after the GI coverage and Casey's interviews).
Then comes the investors call...and our "dear CEO".
This single sentence: "BioWare is in the process of realigning its Mass Effect franchise to appeal to a larger audience, according to EA boss John Riccitiello." has put fear in my mind.
I really hope they won't dumb down ME3 (DAII anyone?).

People are jumping to conclusions and think that because it's going to appeal to a large audience it will be a bad game, well I personally don't think thats true and when Mass Effect 3 comes out those people will be wrong.

I have high hopes for this game...

I thought that article was just an easier way of saying "We're delaying the game because we don't want to compete with our other games coming out at that time". Although that could just be me hiding in my bubble of denial.

DA2 wanted more Call of Duty players.

I guess everyone know how it turned out...

Did you miss the interviews with Casey Hudson that clearly stated that they are adding in more RPG elements?

Why the change of heart, the investors don't make the game, the designers do. Last I checked, Casey Hudson was the lead designer. His words hold more weight to consumers. Unless you own EA stock, the investor guy's marketting spiel isn't going to mean much.

EA has shareholders and investors and if they want something done then guess what EA will get it done .  Investors do not make games you are right . But they can make things happen if they do not like what EA is doing as a business .

That's what investors want to hear.

Basically this, I don't know why everyone is freaking out about this article.

Exactly:

Investors: So why is this product not releasing for the 2011 Holiday season?

Riccitello: Blah, blah, larger market, blah, blah.

Investor: We are now mollified by your largely-content-free PR indoctrination signal.

Riccitello: Moving on...

Faith in company? After what they did to DA2? Surely you jest ?

I have zero faith in Bioware at this point.
