*snipped conspiracy rant*

Did you miss the interviews with Casey Hudson that clearly stated that they are adding in more RPG elements?

john385 wrote...

I'm following ME3 development from the
beginning. Up until yesterday, I was at ease as to how the franchise was
going (especially after the GI coverage and Casey's interviews).
Then comes the investors call...and our "dear CEO".
This
single sentence: "BioWare is in the process of realigning its Mass
Effect franchise to appeal to a larger audience, according to EA boss
John Riccitiello." has put fear in my mind.
I really hope they won't dumb down ME3 (DAII anyone?).

Why the change of heart, the investors don't make the game, the designers do. Last I checked, Casey Hudson was the lead designer. His words hold more weight to consumers. Unless you own EA stock, the investor guy's marketting spiel isn't going to mean much.

I didn't lay down a single conspiracy theory. NOT A ONE.

I talked about what already DID happen and simply asked WHY would it need to happen AGAIN?

@ halo quea: me1 was a shooter/rpg, too y'know. just not balanced very well, mass effect 2 was much better in that regards, so we can expect ME3 will raise the bar further. there are plenty of contemporary combat mechanics to be implemented (and get rid of the ME2 glitches) as well as adding back in some of the rpg mechanics that worked in the first one.

I am worried. And I am worried that it doesn't matter to them that we're worried. The Mass Effect series has been hugely successful. There is a built in market of millions. But eviscerated geese don't lay golden eggs. Can't they just focus on making the folks who are already excited about Mass Effect 3 happy?

I'll buy it day 1 either way. But since this is the last Bioware franchise I have an emotional investment in after what happened with Dragon Age, my interest in future projects hinges on the quality of this game. I don't know how much that means to anyone, but there it is.

The words "do not worry" is the last thing that could ease people's minds. Many people (including I) are going to take lessons from Dragon Age 2.

This ^

I played through DA:O three times and still enjoyed it, I played DA 2 once, said "Meh" and have never touched it again.

I have five full playthroughs of ME2 with all DLC  just waiting to link into ME3, but a this sounds a lot like what they did to DA 2.

So...ME2 is somehow less of a Role Playing Game because they removed that godawful inventory system, while ME3 is showing improvements that makes the same inventory very obsolete, and that makes it even less of a Role Playing Game? Yeah. Sure...

Ahh Ahhh Ahhhhh....
You are an undercover BiowEA employer.. isn't you?
Or maybe you are a COD hardcore fan?
For sure you have played ME1 after ME2 looking for another TPS...

Here we are not talking about the usual marketing LIES that BiowEA (since EA acqusition) have started to tell us on web, magazine, gdc, this forum etc...

These are FINANCIAL STATMENTS ....
 ME3 WILL BE A PURE TPS !!!!

You "undercover biowEA employer / cod fan / me1 is a bad balnced shooter/rpg (Ahhah HAHh) " will be happy with it.
I and many many others no.

THISI IS THE END OF BIOWEA. A WELL DESERVED END.

After SW I have loved ESB and ROFJ.
After SW I would have hate Transformer and G.JOE.
That is what they have done.

Just for curosity,....you have played ME1? Or better, you have played ME1 before ME2 or only after?
Because I really feel that it is DA2 that has passed throught ME2 treatment...

And ME3 will be EVEN WORSE!!!

Considering ME2 was a shooter*, and the reccent DA2, I'm not surprised they're still trying to appeal to a wider audience.

*Yes, ME2 is a shooter to me. Everyone has different standards on what they consider "more like" RPGs, action games, etc.

Maybe I should have worded that differently. I meant, ME2 was pretty much a straight up shooter. Although, nearly the same can be said about ME1, I see it as more like a "baby RPG," or a very simple RPG.

I notice that he's talking about the franchise and not ME3 specifically, I guess we'll have more ipod/ipad,phone games and perhaps a mmo is also in the planning stage.

Exactly. BioWare has never claimed it to be anything else.

I really can't see where everyone got the thought that ME1 was this huge RPG, because you shot stuff through the majority of that game too.

OK, there seems to be some confusion about Man-Giraffe-Dog on the forums, notably that it just looks like a Giraffe-Dog. Well... that's the POINT. Why do you think I'm the only one warning you. It's disguised as a Giraffe-Dog until it's ready to take over the world.
OK this is how Man-Giraffe-Dog came to be:
Image IPB

While growing up it was spotted in the wild (but the team was all killed by it and the photos were recovered afterwards)
Image IPB

After which it began its infiltration of humanity, disguised as Giraffe-Dog:

Which leaves us here. Man-Giraffe-Dog is poised to attack and destroy humanity and I'm trying to warn everyone before it's too late. This is totally serial guys. You need to prepare.

Excelsior!

I am sorry for my grammar and spelling. I am just writing compulsively.
But I bet that you would happly change your writing capabilities with mine if you could speak 4 different idioms like I do !!!

Anyway, I do not want to make it personal... Really!
Now I am aware that you are a bioware fan since the ancient time like myself... or maybe just one of many undercover BiowEA agents... I am joking !

The point is that reagarding ME3 my last concern is to insert "combat mechanics" or "and get rid of the ME2 glitches- ". And also the much discussed "RPG elements" issue is just a smalll part of the problem. ME2 has much more deep issues: linear fake corridors world, no plot, it is very badly written, it has many terrible design choices, far less interaction in all senses etc... I can keep on for pages.

So you can se we are night & day in this regards.

And if you have played ME1 before ME2 you know well that ME1 is not conceived as a shooter/rpg... it is so much more!
For your confirmation, PLEASE, listen to the special ed. dvd of ME1 (collector edition), read all the interviews before the release: you will see how the old Bioware and Casey Hudson sees ME1... You will never read or hear rpg/shooter.

The "shooter/rpg" argument is something born for ME2!!!!
It is from BiowEA time.

FALSE!!!

Again, listen to the limite edition DVD of ME1, read the interviews before ME1 release, listen to Sci Vs Fi....
ME1 was NEVER intended to be a shooter. Never!!!
They (the old Bioware, the original Casey Hudson) NEVER stated that ME1 was an shooter/rpg!!!!
Please... see how they used to define ME1...
The shooter part is just the action component of the game... ONE ELEMENT OF THE MIX !!!!
But seriously, you have really play ME1?!?!?

Please, people, it is time to tell the truth and to accept that BiowEA has wasted a WONDERFUL FRANCHISE!!!

Though I know this would make many rage, I don't mind cuting down inventory or gun customization or how much I can dress up my buddies.  But cutting down on immersive elements like lore, conversations, exploration, story choices, personality choices, that does bother me.  I think they struck a pretty good balance in ME2, though I would have liked more conversations with my comrades in arms, but I also know that casual gamers don't like spending long amounts of time in conversation.  I really hope cutting down conversation isn't the sort of change they're considering.

Hope this isn't what I think it means and more what Admiral Cheez is saying.

If Bioware do mess it up but catering it even more to 'casual' players and risk alienating their large fanbase, I won't be buying another game from them.

The fact is that well over half of ME1 is spent firing a gun into a crowd of enemies.  Frequently in the same room with the same enemies you've been shooting at several dozen times before.  ME2 gave us diverse environments and more varied goals than "kill all the mercenaries" "kill all the scientists" "kill all the geth," and suddenly shooting was actually fun and more skill-based than standing back and watching meters rise and fall.  The overarching story of ME1 is a lot clearer and better-paced than ME2, but ME2 had much more interesting and varied side quests in the form of recruitment and loyalty missions.
And I played ME1 when it came out (bought a 360 for that reason) and I played ME2 when it came out.  Folks constantly demanding everyone acknowledge ME1 as a perfect game are tiresome.
