Possible reason for the delay...besides the obvious need for polish.

I know the comments about making ME 3 more open to a larger audience and all that can bring thoughts of worry. However this isn't a new theory. I think anyone that played both ME games would strongly agree that there was a major effort and shift made for ME 2, to make it more accessible to the masses.
All that effort was made, they released the game in a period where it had almost no major sales competition, and it won award after award, but despite all that, it didn't bring in the masses like EA wanted. The sales numbers for ME 2 are almost identical to those of ME 1, except the obvious PS3 version for ME 2, which isn't selling well enough to really worry about.
That's as strong a message as you can get, that stripping the game down, streamlining it for the masses isn't the way to go, and comments Bioware has made would seem to suggest they got that message. There have been several comments made by devs almost since development of ME 3 started, saying there would be more depth and more RPG elements to ME 3, and the huge media blitz articles in Game Informer and other places last month, only seem to further support that concept. I'm sorry, there just isn't any real reason to think that the delay is to start stripping the game down again or simplifying it in any major way.
From most development departments that have made comments about ME 3, it seems the game is very ambitious on many fronts, and it may just be they need more time to get it right, especially after Bioware rushed DA II out the door and have been taking a pretty vocal and deserved bashing over it. No point in damaging the reputation of 2 of your main franchises in the same year.
Despite all that though, I think there is probably a fair bit of avoiding the competition involved too. Mass Effect may be loved to death by it's fans, and racking up one hell of a trophy case full of awards, but bottom line, it's middle of the road in terms of sales, and not even close to a sales match to many of the big franchises coming this fall.
People asking about why worry about Skyrim? Because the last Elder Scrolls game, Oblivion, alone, and not including the Shivering isles expansion sales, just the main game alone, outsold the entire Mass Effect franchise (both ME 1 and 2 on all platforms) combined. That's why worry about Skyrim, and it's got a lot of positive buzz going for it.too.
That's not even getting into Gears of War or Assassin's Creed which are even bigger sales juggernauts. Uncharted 3, Saint's Row 3, Arkham City, Battlefield 3, are also all coming out this fall too and all had better sales with thier previous games in the franchise compared to any ME game, not to mention Id's Rage, XCom,and Deus Ex Human Revolution which are all likely to be big hitters.
The fact is, Mass Effect 2 couldn't generate competitive sales numbers with most of these series when it launched mostly uncontested last January, so it's a safe bet that ME 3 has little or no chance of putting up good numbers if launched head to head with several of these games. It's a no win situation for them, especially with the economy in the US being what it is. No point in playing hero, just take the time they need to get the game done right, and launch it when it's at an optimal timeframe to succeed.

1. They've seen what happened to DA:2, their gonna take their time so people cant say it was rushed.
2. With Skyrim (to name just 1 great game this year), they will need the extra time so that nobody will say any of those games are better.
3. They're going to polish it as much as possible, they're changing alot of things in ME: 3 like the new cover system, it'll require some more time to make sure its up to scratch.
4. Games are looking more realistic, more vibrant and they're sound better too. They've to make sure their game is up to the same standards (if not better) of recent games.
To sum things up: MORE POLISH (polish), BETTER CARVINGS ON THEIR POLISHED TABLE(graphics and sound) AND NOT A RECAP OF THE CHIPBOARD TABLE THEY RELEASED IN MARCH (DA:2). I hope you liked my wooden table simile (or is it a metaphor).

Sometimes delay is not for good of the game, its just delay so they dont crush dead among the titans like BF3,TW2 and Skyrim, game would look pathetic if it failed among those 3.
