Merrill has some cool-sounding Elvish battle cries. I've always wanted to know what they mean exactly, but I can't find them anywhere. Now I've brushed up on Elvlish a little bit, I've noticed that one of Merrill's most common battle cries:

"Melana sahlin!" (meh-LAH-nah sah-LEEN)

My rough translation: "Now is the time!"/"It's now or never!"

Is actually a phrase directly taken from the first sentence of the lyrics of In Uthenera, Leliana's campsite song from Origins:

hahren na melana sahlin
emma ir abelas
souver'inan isala hamin
vhenan him dor'felas
in uthenera na revas

Can anybody confirm this? It also seems to me that another of Merrill's battle cries is also taken from the same lyrics- it's a phrase that ends with a word sounding like abelas. It could be "Na abelas", which roughly translates to "Woe onto you!" or (more loosely) "Your funeral!"

It's the song of mourning.. It's the same as Merrill says when summoning Flemeth, she just doesn't sing it.

  • "Melana sahlin!" (meh-LAH-nah sah-LEEN)
  • My rough translation: "Now is the time!"/"It's now or never!"
[/list]Edit: It means, "it's over."

The song is about the end of living, whic Uthanera is for Arlathan elves, the waking slumber.

If this were the case surely they could have found another insopiration for her alternative outfit:Posted Image

Perhaps that is no coincidence, indeed:

I can't imagine Merril's rivalmance working then. Since according to the King, "we can't go on together / with suspicious minds." And my Hawke was pretty damn suspicious of her blood magic.

Elder your time is come
Now I am filled with sorrow
Weary eyes need resting
Heart has become grey and slow
In waking sleep is freedom

Bear in mind this isn't a fully fleshed out actual language. There's going to be some overlap or missing words. 'Melana sahlin' doesn't necessarily carry that one specific meaning. 'It's over' or 'you're finished' would work just as well, I imagine.

Abelas carries two meanings: sorrow and regret. It's both a word and an apology. 'Na abelas' would also translate into 'you'll be sorry', more or less.

(I think, anyway)

It WAS.

Years asking for a premier on the language, and in the end? "Um, we kinda lost it."

Mary seems to have retained a great deal of the qunari language. Did she make a copy?

Merrill lacks the King's musical talent, unfortunately.

Where does it say that she can't?
