I installed Mass Effect and get to the splash page when I get this message.
"General protection fault!
History: GMatrix2D::Swap() Address = 0x10bb5676 (filename not found) [in C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Mass Effect\\Binaries\\MassEffect.exe]Address = 0x180f12e4 (filename not found) "
I already went through the solution on EA's website for the game crashing on Vista by disabling User Account Control, restarting, running the game, and enabling UAC again, but that didn't do anything. Could anyone please give me an idea how to fix this issue?

Read the system requirements. NVidia or ATI graphics cards are required.

I don't think that is the problem, (although you should have a graphics card) because I suffer GPF's, and I have a Nvidia 9800 GT.

Good heavens! You're trying to get it to run on an Intel 965? The problem is definitely related to that. You won't be able to run it at all on that chip, which is measly and weak even by integrated graphics chip "standards". I'm sorry, but the only way you will be able to play the game is if you buy a computer with a proper graphics card made by nVidia or AMD.

Incidentally, the overall symptom of GPFs in ME-1 goes back to the game's release, and is well documented:
