This is the first time I've actually launched the game and I'm getting massive tears on everybody's textures- on their face, armour, weapons, everything. Haven't heard of someone else having the problem/seen a solution.

Before starting I tweaked around with my cfg, just set a custom res to 640x480, that's it. I tried it on a higher res and still got the tears, so I doubt it's that.

I'd greatly appreciate any solutions you can muster.

EDIT: I KNOW I can run it. Don't assume that's it. I've played the demo flawlessly (on 640x480, at that), so it's not my specs. If you must know, I'm on a 2.5GHz dual core intel, 4GB of RAM, 64 bit Vista, onboard Intel GMA X4500 (yeah, yeah, I know it's ****ing awful shut up about it ;_;)+ 1.76 GB of v-ram.

Only ATI and Nvidia chipsets are fully supported. Its your lack of a decent video chipset thats causing the problem.

System Requirements
Supported Chipsets: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD3200, and HD4350 are below minimum system requirements.

I see no mention of the Intel chipsets there.

Just because it isn't supported doesn't mean I can't run it. There's video of people playing on the same card as I'm on on youtube.

If it isnt supported, it means the game was not designed to run on it. Just because other people (who more than likely have greater technical competance than you) have been able to do it, doesnt mean you will have any success. There is no set standard for implementing any form of onboard chipset for laptops, so the capability of the chipsets, even if the same, will vary between laptop manufacturers, laptop models, or even different revisions of the same model by the same manufacturer.
Fact of the matter remains, your hardware is unsupported and sub standard. Stop complaining and live with it.

Not a laptop. Boy, I love your assumptive nature.

Its still an onboard chipset, using shared ram, and incorprated onto the mainboard with the same lack of standards as laptops, so effectively, its the same as running it on a laptop.
Unlike a laptop, you can at least go out, spend $20 and get yourself a decent, if old, video card that is fully supported, and will let you run the game at a decent resolution and enhanced graphics options. Unless you have slim-line pc, in which case you might be hard pressed findnig a half heoght card to suit.

I've seen this problem before and it's exclusive to Intel chipsets. Maybe you can improve it a little by doing tweaks in your graphics processor's control panel, but the chance of a flawless run is low.

Your're playing on a desktop and needing to play at a resolution of 640x480 and you're STILL getting graphical errors and that doesn't seem like a problem with your hardware to you?

Disengage ego and engage brain please.

I spent 110 dollars on a 9800GT 1GB, contrary to your assumptions, Bogsnot. Defective. So I'm on this for now.

Moondoggie, I play almost every game on 640x480. With no problem, aside from of course, ****ty settings. That's not an error.

What I'm saying is that there's more than a possibility of this happening on another card from another manufacturer (although Fred has confirmed otherwise [thanks]), and that just because it isn't supported, doesn't mean it's a direct fault of the video card.

Try downloading and installing a driver update from here. If that fails, then I'm sorry, but the only solution is to get a real graphics card meant for gaming.

I'm not sure which patch version the demo was based on, but I believe it was one of the later ones. If you haven't patched to 1.02 I'd suggest that.

Otherwise, it's really a bit of luck of the draw.

I figured out the problem. I remember back when Portal 2 got its early release, and I had pre-ordered it, it'd freeze on loading screen for a bunch of intel card users, and for whatever reason, the solution was to uninstall the graphics control panel. I obviously did it as I pre-ordered it and was waiting on the game since Portal 1 came out. Valve's since fixed that, so there's no need for me to keep it uninstalled.

I reinstalled it and launched the game, and everything is perfect. Thanks a lot Fred, for making me realize my problem.
