But it seems to me no matter what I say to her I keep getting +riverly. During her quest in Act 2 the Elf that ran away died and I comforted her and said it's not her fault but I end up with +10 riverly. Ok try again and I gave her the knife in Act 2 and got some + friendship from her but when I spoke to her again she got angry and kicked me out of her house. What? So I thought I'll try again and gave her a gift which she said was nice and I picked the nice option in speech but I got +15 riverly for it.
Totally bemused I was surprised to see her turn up at the House but I went with it clicking on the nice options and we end up in bed where I tell her I love her and want her to stay with me and guess what .... I get +15 riverly for it.
So I'm now max'd out in riverly with her even though I choose all the nice options in speech to her and gave her the knife and I'm confused how that can be.

Merrill can be kinda fickle - trying to coddle her will yield rivalry points as will disagreeing with her outright over what she's doing - she's sick of being questioned and not taken seriously so you get rivalry for 'babying' her - I think if you pick the overly comforting options when Pol dies you get some. When you got the angry conversation after giving her the Arulin'holm, what happened? I always have 2 conversation quests queued up after that so I'm not 100% which one you're referring to.

With the 50 rivalry points from the tomes the games thinks you want to pursue the rivarly path and therefore everything kind you do with or to Merrill gives rivalry.

After taking a couple of weeks break to play Origins again. I decided on my first playthrough to romance Merrill. I knew before hand that destroying the Evil Tomes would make you + riverly but thought if I pick the nice options I could balance it out.

The final parts of the rivalry meter is in fact "rivalry respect", which means despite seeing a rivalry increase, it instead reflects positively on your character, and that Merrill has finally come to accept the fact you do not agree with her, but you two can still be close.
If the final parts of the rivalry meter is not maxed, it instead means Merrill is in a state of disagreement, or even downright hatred against you, and will refuse to aid you in the final quest.
Therefore it is good that you got the final 30 rivalry points.
To put forth a chart to explain things more clearly.
Friendship 0 / Rivalry 0 (Neutral to Hawke)
v
Rivalry 1-25 (Beginning to dislike Hawke)
v
Rivalry 26-49 (Hates Hawke, will refuse to aid, or even turn against Hawke for final quest)
v
Rivalry 50-75 (Questioning Beliefs, you now have the option of explaining your motives to party members, very crucial)
v
Rivalry 76-Max (Rivalry respect, party member may not like you, but they respect you and will aid you all the way)

That's actually an excellent explanation of the mechanic. Bravo.
