BW is good, but it isn't that good. Just because BW is edging out of the RPG field to dally with other genres does not mean the RPG genre is at an end (or decline). Other developers will fill in the void, be they the big-name companies or the smaller indie developers. So long as there is a market, there will be someone there to serve that market.
Thank you Eradyn with your insightful post. It is clear you disagree with me but at least you outlined your opinions instead of replying with a "This thread sucks!" type answer. With that being said, I'll reply to your comment.
I believe Bioware is the lead to bring down the RPG genre. I say this because Bioware is currently the market leader in RPGs and has been for I would say....the past 8 years or so. Bioware is a leader and the industry looks up to them and evaluates them to see how they do things. People know that when Bioware makes a move, it will be a successful move and whatever Bioware does, it would be imitated by other developers. So people are looking at Bioware now and what they did with DA2 and what they're doing with ME3. Despite the backlash of DA2,
it still managed to sell over 2 million copies. So when developer decide that they want to create a RPG game on consoles, they would use Bioware as a benchmark as to what an RPG would be and those examples would likely be something like ME3. It goes back to my example of what Dee Snider said about how the industry tried to create a formula what what a metal band is. The same will happen to RPGs to the point where there really is no RPGs on the AAA scale.
Yes, there will be indie RPGs and so on, but nothing made on the AAA scale as the Activisions and the EAs all want the hybrid Action-RPG type games.
10 Years from now, I would give a "RPG fan" a copy of NWN or BG and tell them to play it and they would look at me like I'm stupid because their notion of what an RPG is would be different from what it REALLY is.
Look at the Hip Hop industry. Yes, todays rap music is selling more than ever, but you cannot look at me in the eye and tell me that Hip Hop of today is on the same level of quality as Hip Hop of the early to mid 80s.
Popularity does not equal quality.
