Mass Effect 3 will be the Vanguard to the decline of the RPG genre.

I had to post this as an example of how I think the direction of the RPG genre is going and how Bioware is the Vanguard of this.

In an interview, Dee Snider talks about the decline of the Metal genre of the 80s and how something that started out as raw and edgy, turned into an almighty way to make a simple buck. I'll let you watch:

Dee Snider about the decline of heavy metal

I believe that there are some simiarlities in this in terms of the RPG genre. It is something that started out as something raw and designed for a certain gamer, and turned into something that was stripped down (like Snider pointed out with the Metal genre being stripped down) to appeal to a larger audience who initially werent into RPGs.

Note: I doubt this will stay open because some mod would close this thread as it isn't "ME related". It is ME related in a sense of how it will affect the industry going forth, thing is....it isn't positive so I know this thread will be locked eventually.

We get it, you didn't like ME2. Don't buy ME3 if it bothers you so much after hearing virtually nothing.

Also, the metal genre is still good - you just need to know where to look.

BW is good, but it isn't that good. Just because BW is edging out of the RPG field to dally with other genres does not mean the RPG genre is at an end (or decline). Other developers will fill in the void, be they the big-name companies or the smaller indie developers. So long as there is a market, there will be someone there to serve that market.

So you're arguing that the fall of the RPG is like the fall of 80's metal? Well, if that makes Mass Effect the video game equivalent to Nirvana, then I'm all for it.

Why did I listen to Dee Snider like he was an expert or something?

Being famous for something doesn't make you an expert at it, it just gives you a podium to talk about it.

In regards to ME3:  Maybe we should wait to see the games contents before we claim that ME3 will be to RPGs what Poison was to 80s metal.

Yuck!

Taking Twisted Sister as a word about metal? LOL, that's stupid.

You know what they say about the metal. You can't kill it.

Mangiraffedog has saved this thread from being completely pointless, There is no point for another ''Hardcore RPG is dying thread'' when we had thousands of those already ...

Jeff Vogel's recent post is very apropos here.  He nearly killed his market in Avernum 6 by listening to the hardcore RPG players and making the game too hard.  I know change is scary, but it is time to move on.

Thank you Eradyn with your insightful post. It is clear you disagree with me but at least you outlined your opinions instead of replying with a "This thread sucks!" type answer. With that being said, I'll reply to your comment.

I believe Bioware is the lead to bring down the RPG genre. I say this because Bioware is currently the market leader in RPGs and has been for I would say....the past 8 years or so. Bioware is a leader and the industry looks up to them and evaluates them to see how they do things. People know that when Bioware makes a move, it will be a successful move and whatever Bioware does, it would be imitated by other developers. So people are looking at Bioware now and what they did with DA2 and what they're doing with ME3. Despite the backlash of DA2, it still managed to sell over 2 million copies.

So when developer decide that they want to create a RPG game on consoles, they would use Bioware as a benchmark as to what an RPG would be and those examples would likely be something like ME3. It goes back to my example of what Dee Snider said about how the industry tried to create a formula what what a metal band is. The same will happen to RPGs to the point where there really is no RPGs on the AAA scale.

Yes, there will be indie RPGs and so on, but nothing made on the AAA scale as the Activisions and the EAs all want the hybrid Action-RPG type games.

10 Years from now, I would give a "RPG fan" a copy of NWN or BG and tell them to play it and they would look at me like I'm stupid because their notion of what an RPG is would be different from what it REALLY is.

Look at the Hip Hop industry. Yes, todays rap music is selling more than ever, but you cannot look at me in the eye and tell me that Hip Hop of today is on the same level of quality as Hip Hop of the early to mid 80s.

Popularity does not equal quality.

This poster has taste!

Anyway, I don't see it as Bioware's downfall, just a shift in focus. Evolution at its finest. Technology changes and the demands of consumers change. The only constant in the world is change. Don't make me break out the Morrigan "change speech".

Off course I can, but then don't make everything like something catastrophic happened. You really think that it's all EA's fault and that without them BW will still make only old-school RPGs? Sofware houses evolve with time, as everything else. You can't like it and disagree with what they do now, but please, let's talk about this in sensed way, instead of writing a tragedy!

Watch this:

I think there is some similarities what happened with metal music of the 80s and what is happening to the core RPG genre of today.

And here's the point. You wanted specifically a "core RpG". Simply you care of Mass Effect as a game, and you're scandalized because it's not the kind of game you expected. I care of Mass Effect as a story, and I'm lowly interested in game's mechanics: if it was a 2D platform I'd still play it. And I'm not joking: I tryed almost any possible kind of game and when the story and the characters appealed to me I've alwas been interested more in seeying how that story ended more than wich button or skill I've had to use to continue. I suppose that if I was you, now I'll be a lot disappointed, but I think you're totally missing the point. To link my post to your example... If you like a song, who cares if it's metal or not?
