I'd say it's a glitch. Perhaps shield hit animations got their damage based off of the weapon just later in development and they missed one? It's certainly inconsistent with other shield attacking animations.

This dude however might noticed it before you (he normally is the first do notice that type of glitch), maybe he can answer your question if you PM him.

Does it? I think the "subtitle" just lingers there after Shield Bash > Assault. And, anyway, Shield Bash triggers normally off weapon and has the same elemental type as the weapon, obviously.

Did you just link his own profile? Or am I missing something?
Anyway, I noticed it a few times, but never new really what was causing it so I didn't look into it.

Anyone else having this problem or am I just missing something?

One thing I've noticed is that the shield attacks seem to make it difficult to select abilities on your quickslot. They're usually greyed out while I'm auto-attacking. I can't get the timing down and most times have to go into the radial menu every time I want to use Assault.

I have no idea what that "radial menu" is. You should ask one of the Xbox/PS players, I guess. The issue does not exist on the PC.

that is a range issue caused by the position forced on characters on consoles.kyles3 wrote...

I believe it has more to do with porting and hotkey introduction than anything.
solution:
push forward on the stick

He is definitely in tune with the fine and detailed intricacies of S&S play.

Like the shield of the knight herself?

Maybee courage was planned as a shield that return basic attack damage to attackers??(but wasnt removed properly,so it sometimes triggers with rather high numbers)

No, the 100% base melee damage return is calculated off your base weapon damage and is the same damage type as your weapon. I've tested it extensively using Glandivalis, so no, it's not that. Currently, I'm quite sure S&S can attack with a shield instead of a main-hand weapon under certain conditions (much in the same manner D&S rogue can).

Seriously, unlike a human error, I can't see how that "bug" even came to be. This is strange.

Well, the fact is it happens consistently. I have the detailed description of the conditions I was able to figure out in the OP. In fact, I'm not surprised I'm the first to pay attention to this odd phenomenon. Most people play physical S&S, and when all the damage you deal is white, it's easy to (dis-)miss an unusually high number.

Perhaps it has to do with the poisons you're using on your weapon- perhaps it only happens when the poison's effect triggers? Try playing without poison- perhaps that will eliminate this effect.
Well, I don't want this effect to be eliminated. I want to find a way to trigger it at will and cheese through the game using the evolving shield with 500 AR!!!
Actually, that's a sound idea, yes.

No, I reproduced it without any poisons or potions/toggles for that matter. Also doesn't matter if it's Hawke or a companion. Nor which weapon/shiled you have equipped.
You shameless bug-user!!!

Anyway you already figured it out. I'm expecting a video of the Xenebeck fight using only shield hits soon.

Knowing IN1, the Xeb fight would probably take 30 seconds maximum using only shield hits.
IN1's totally just been holding out on us.
