I am considering another run through DA:2 and though I played it once as a mage, I went through it so fast that I didn’t really enjoy the fine details.  I have also started an archer but didn’t play that character beyond the demo.  As I have always been a “ranged” player, I was wondering what you all would suggest as the better DPS class.

In my style of play, I typically only use a CC ability if I’m trying to set up a major kill-shot or something along those lines.  I would like to play a class with a strong AOE DPS ability as well as the ability to survive a few screw-up’s along the way.  With that in mind, which you would suggest?

Force/Blood Mage (Elemental) or the Assassin Archer?  I had also considered using the skill mod that would give my archer the same abilities as Varric.

As an example, I play a Sentinel for my main class in ME:2 and I typically don't stop much between targets.  My normal style is just to use overwhelming DPS to remove all threats.

I would say that if ur gonna get caught up in close range fights from time 2 time u should go archer, if u give urself good dexterity u can dodge a lot of attacks AND improve ur accuracy. although the mage can b VERY powerful he is very weak when in melee range and 2 counter that u may give up some of dps. archers can b very accurate and u can give em skills 2 help em dodge attacks as well as all of the skills that do awesome damage and it has a powerful area of effect ability aswell.

If you like AoE abilities, use a mage. If you use the force mage spells together with firestorm/tempest, you can clear half the battle field in a few moments. Mages can survive some screw ups, the 100 fortitue passive of force mage, a good speced blood mage or spells like cone of cold are helpful.
If you want to kill single targets as quickly as possible, use a assassin archer. Also some tricks of the sleeve to survive close combat, good defense, threath management and stealth, but the AoE talents stink. The whole archer skills tree is pretty bad. Never thought to much about Varric's tree, can't tell you anything about it.

My first run was as a force mage using firestorm as my main "kill-all" ability.  I used my second spec into a spirit healer simply because I don't trust the AI to do it well enough nor did I like Anders once he betrayed my character.

The mod that will allow you to use any ability tree from your class is really impressive as it gives the rogue PC the ability to use all of Varric's skills combined with any of the normal skills you can get as a rogue.  It also allows you to pick up a few from Isabela if you have extra points.  From what I've seen, it really makes you the master of the battlefield.  Yeah, I suppose it's cheating but that's why there are harder difficulty settings.

I actually use Sebastians Archer tree with Isabela. Works well. When she gets confronted by melee, one click and she swaps out to daggers.
