"We want to enrich the role-playing aspects of the game, while making sure that they're always meaningful in combat,"

"We don't want to have any meaningless behind-the-scenes stat games, where the output is very minor in combat. Every single thing you do has a real impact in the battle."

Two things, I want to put here.

1) A very wonderful and insightful post by Scimal
that articulates why this is a great thing to happen for the evolution of RPG's as a whole

Bye bye ME3. You are becomming a mindless shooter with maybe some weapon profiencies and no RPG.

Remember how when you leveled up your powers, swapped your armor around, or got an upgrade, it didn't really feel like it did anything?

That's what they're fixing here, it sounds like. Seems they want leveling up to finally mean something.

No reason to panic... yet.

People like you are ridiculous, get a grip.

It's a game where you ASSUME THE ROLE of a character, and what Bioware means is that your upgrades/abilities will impact the game in more dramatic ways.

Stop jumping to conclusions and open your mind, I suggest you read it again. Properly.

I'll never understand how dice roll and stat based combat/conversations are considered the only way to have a digital role playing experience. They make sense on a board game, but always struck me as silly and frivolous in a computer game.

For me, RPG is about playing a role, shaping a character and their story according to my choices. That's all I care about. For you, it's putting points in stats and rolling dices. The later is the mindless part, isn't it?

I just think they mean they're helping out combat, don't misconstrue the words. Remember how leveling up your characters class leveled up his paragon/renegade? That might be something of what they're talking about.

I'm fine with ME having a more action-based combat. I see the story and companions as the most important thing and then the gameplay should be as fun as possible to move that story along and create that character development. In the case of shooting gameplay, it makes sense to let RPG elements take a backseat. I don't need every game I play to have stats and charts and tactical pausing just to be a great RPG. Not that tactical games aren't great - I actually do prefer games with RPG elements (like DAO) but accept that it's best they go one way or the other rather than being stuck in the middle like ME1. If they make the gameplay fun, whether it be through pure shooting (ME2) or through tactical gameplay (DAO) and keep a story as great as ME1, ME2 or DAO, I'm happy.

I think they tried to say that, and, honestly, I'm not bothered with it.

All you care about means nothing, the game is not developed just for you, so drop it!

An rpg is not just "play a role" crap, you play the role of characters in many games not even considered rpgs but pure shooters, your point is invalid too.

If someone likes stat based equipment that makes them mindless? damn this community is just full of retards really.. yeah.

...
U mad, bro? There isn't even a gameplay video yet haha. No point raging about how the game is going to suck yet. I also think that:
  • A role playing game is, to me, about playing a role. Stats are alright, but in a game that's always been part-shooter, I think they're not really that key to my gaming experience (and before any ridiculous "derp I play the role of Ezio in assassins creed, is that an rpg?" or whatever, you cannot customize that characters gender, race, sexual orientation etc. You also do not shapre your characters morality and the events of the story you play.)
  • You're jumping to ridiculous conclusions. Don't say "yeah well DA2," because that was a different team, writer(s) and lead designer.
  • What non-combat stats actually are there in any of the me games?

And the doomsaying begins anew. As Cheez pointed out, they're talking about making your choices regarding character builds and equipment have a more profound effect. +5% shield boosts and +3% weapon damage boosts were pretty much meaningless in ME2, and they're working to correct that.

I sort of agree with this, but I enjoy putzing around with how I fare in combat quite a bit.

However, I like it when my upgrades, mods, and skill investments actually do something more than +10% damage.  For example, choosing between squad incendiary and inferno ammo?  That's cool, since both bring a new mechanic to the table and tweak how battles unfold.

For an example of how player choice and skill trees can result in greater in-field changes without getting crazy with numbers, check out the research system in the SC2: Wings of Liberty campaign.

They are also talking about that everything not related to combat is meaningless, don't try to deny it.

Its DA2 all over again.

Aha.

They never said that, they said STATS not related to combat are meaningless. No that cut scenes, dialogue etc. weren't.

Also, saying "it's DA2 ALL OVER AGAIN!!!" after every post that's rambling about ME3 sucking is a trope here on the forums:lol:

Exactely, the game would loose so much without stats, i mean after that then what? no need for new equipment too because its pointless right, does the same thing so lets scrap it, whats the point of having more armors or other gear if there are no real stats to compare or improve on some aspect of the game, its silly going this way.

Commence panic? Yes or no?

I would rather have more armor and weapon options in ME2 than less. Though it was overkill in ME1.

So I guess I imagined all the dialogue, romances, and story arcs, which have nothing to do with combat, in DA2.

Stating "lol DA2 was dumbed down" like it's some kind of fact we should recoil from in dread isn't an argument. Why don't you talk about how your "immersion" was ruined next? That carries just about as much weight with me. No, wait, less.

Well their were too many I-X variants.

That was a mistake.

Different armors with different base abilities that can be enhanced through mods would be the best way to clean up that system.

With this announcement, hopefully that means the armor you wear might actually matter.

But ME2 didn't have any non-combat statistics either, other than the Paragon-Renegade system, and to be honest if they got rid of that I'd be jumping for joy, considering it's arbitrary and inhibits roleplaying.
