People like you are ridiculous, get a grip.

It's a game where you ASSUME THE ROLE of a character, and what Bioware means is that your upgrades/abilities will impact the game in more dramatic ways.

Stop jumping to conclusions and open your mind, I suggest you read it again. Properly.

You ASSUME THE ROLE of a character in Halo, so does that make it an RPG?  You assume the role of a character in some racing games, so does that make them RPG's?

YES BUT YOU CAN'T CUSTOMIZE YOUR CHARACTERS GENDER, RACE, SEXUAL ORIENTATION OR MORALITY IN HALO! (well gender in reach, but that's a one-off)

Perhaps you're right, in my next ME:2 playthrough I think I'll play as a gay male Turian....Oh...wait...You can't choose your race, or your orientation.

YOU ALSO HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE EVENTS OF THE STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!

...*pant* Sorry, hate to get that out my system.
But anyway, that's the point of playing a role. You chose what happens, at least to a certain extent. You define your character.

Jokes aside, I will admit to being somewhat concerned, though I do hope that they simply mean that stat boosts from things like armour will be much more noticable in ME:3.  Granted that we're going back to a max level of 60 again, so by all rights the changes should be noticable, or someone screwed up.

Maybe I'm being a little dense here, but could someone give me some examples of meaningless non-combat stats from ME2?

(Beyond that one or two points you could'nt spend because the next highest skill upgrade was 3 points-that was always annoying.)

This eye piece adds 5% damage to head shots....... This Armour adds 10% sheilds..

um you cant do that in alot of RPGS
examples:
final fantasy,Chrono trigger, etc.

JRPGS =/= WRPGS

There is a fairly big difference betwen the two.

The problem of RPG non-combat skills is that a lot of them don't psychologically reward the player when he invests skill points in them. When you get this extra better aiming, you get to actively use it and feel the difference, the advantage in combat.

Non-combat skills like persuasion don't psychologically reward me so well when I get to convince somebody. If however I lack persuasion, it causes a lot of frustration when that dialog tree is closed for me.

In short:
Combat skills: Feels bad when you don't have them, feels great when you get them.
Non-Combat Skills: Feels horrible when you don't have them, feels NOTHING when you have them.

This is why I hate this aspect of RPGs. I like the way ME2 went, and I am OK with the direction ME3 takes.

I shall never forget how frustrating were the citadel levels in ME1, when I had to give up on combat and invest into paragon/renegade just to able to complete some quests and get experience.

GOOD RIDDANCE.

I'm fine with ME having a more action-based combat. I see the story and companions as the most important thing and then the gameplay should be as fun as possible to move that story along and create that character development. In the case of shooting gameplay, it makes sense to let RPG elements take a backseat. I don't need every game I play to have stats and charts and tactical pausing just to be a great RPG. Not that tactical games aren't great - I actually do prefer games with RPG elements (like DAO) but accept that it's best they go one way or the other rather than being stuck in the middle like ME1. If they make the gameplay fun, whether it be through pure shooting (ME2) or through tactical gameplay (DAO) and keep a story as great as ME1, ME2 or DAO, I'm happy.

All this means is you don't have to spend points on charm, intimidate, decryption etc. I don't see what the big deal is.

I just read the article linked in the OP, and I think it's good news.

Or am I missing something else?

Most of the people here use 'RPG' as shorthand for WRPG (Baldur's Gate, etc), because, I don't know, JRPGs are not RPGs or something. That aside, no JRPG I've ever played has even *had* non-combat-related statistics.

I was reffering to in Halo, customization of story and your character is a key role in several RPG's, paticularly Bioware ones.;)

By race I meant ethnicity. By orientation, female shepard's can play as lesbian. (and I swear if I hear the ridiculous hurr hurr Asari aren't women arguement...)

So directly saying that were enriching the role-playing mechanics and making stats meaningful in combat somehow also means we're making them worse?

For me, RPG is about playing a role, shaping a character and their story according to my choices. That's all I care about. For you, it's putting points in stats and rolling dices. The latter is the mindless part, isn't it?

I sort of agree with this, but I enjoy putzing around with how I fare in combat quite a bit.

However, I like it when my upgrades, mods, and skill investments actually do something more than +10% damage. For example, choosing between squad incendiary and inferno ammo? That's cool, since both bring a new mechanic to the table and tweak how battles unfold.

For an example of how player choice and skill trees can result in greater in-field changes without getting crazy with numbers, check out the research system in the SC2: Wings of Liberty campaign.

Exactely, the game would loose so much without stats, i mean after that then what? no need for new equipment too because its pointless right, does the same thing so lets scrap it, whats the point of having more armors or other gear if there are no real stats to compare or improve on some aspect of the game, its silly going this way.

You are a cartoonish representation of the "true RPG fans" out there and you're not helping those out there with genuine concerns about this news.
