Anyone should always check with their own retailer what the stor'e policy is on upgrading or cancelling a pre-order before making it. That way, whether good news or bad news comes after you have pre-ordered, you won't be hit by any unpleasant surprises.

What chris said. As far as I remember, the GameStop employee I talked to said you could upgrade it - it depends from retailer to retailer. You can ask the store employees specifically to find out, just in case they're the evil gamestop store.

At gamestop yes, you can preorder the regular eddition and when there is word of a limited edition all you have to do is go and pay the difference. ex. $100 limited edition - $60 regular edition = $40 is what you would have to pay, and you would get a new receipt and everything, also you can make payments or "installments" on any version but in order to open an account on any game you must have at least $5 ready when you make the claim.

Your best bet is simply to go back and upgrade your preorder a few days after it is announced. If you go the same day it's announced, it probably won't have a SKU in the system yet. If you wait a month after, it could already be too late like with Dragon Age: Origins. It's very unlikely that they'll have enough collectors editions to upgrade you if you change your mind on the release day.
TBH you should put at least a total of $25 down on the game. Preorders for normal games are $5 down, limited/collectors editions are usually $10 down (for ~$80 CEs), and "prestige"/"epic"/etc. editions are usually $25 down (>$100). If you put down $25, you're ready for anything. Call up the store when it's announced if they don't get a chance to call you and just ask them to upgrade you, and that you already have enough money. If you're talking to an SGA, ASM, or Manager, they'll probably do it. It's very easy to DOWNGRADE to the regular edition, while it's very hard to UPGRADE to the collector's edition on release day. The more reserves they have for the collector's editions, the safer they are.
Make sure you keep your phone number current in case you change it, or put down a second phone number in case your phone auto-blocks GameStop corporate's automatic phone calls. You can also put in your E-mail, but you'll get more than just updates on your preorder. Not spam, but it might be hard to weed out information on ME3 from sales, events, etc. relating to GameStop.

The following assumes you preordered online for in-store pick-up:
Well then, that means you probably put $0 down. I dunno if you can cancel a preorder online, or if you have to go in the store to do it. But eventually, you're gonna have to cancel it when you make your preorder on the collector's edition. The reason is because I think if you wait a certain period of time after a game comes out and haven't picked up an ***ONLINE*** preorder, you get charged like $5. Reason is to keep people from screwing with GameStop inventory; e.g. placing a hundred orders of a game to a store that won't sell them. This only applies to online, in-store pickup-type preorders. Any in-store preorders don't have anything like this because a deposit is required, and although a deposit is fully refundable, a real person can decide to not put down 8 copies of Dora the Explora's Big Crayon Adventure for the PSP for a customer calling himself Lotsa Buttcrack. Automated services can't make decisions like that.
I dunno whether a collectors edition also requires $0 down as an online preorder, in-store pickup. You might still have to put down money for that.
If it's an online preorder, with shipping to your house, I dunno how that works. Not my job. :-P

When will it be available for pre-order in other stores?
Because I'd rather pick up the game when it's out myself than waiting for some slow shipping.

Hey folks, I just had a REAL close look at the collectors edition stuff that you get -in game-.
All of the N7 stuff is reskinned weapons we have seen before.
The SMG is clearly the locust
The Shotgun is the Evicerator
The Sniper Rifle is the Incisor
The Pistol is the Phalanx.
I may be odd, but I prefer -in game bonuses- before loot that comes in a box.
The reskinned armor looks cool, and the Fenrir mech looks kinda nifty, assuming it does more then sit in your room and beep at you.
I don't know if this is worth the 70+bucks for the non-hard copy.

Btw, anyone aware of when the option of pre-ordering the game will be available on Steam? I'm really concerned if I'll have the mandatory 60 bucks available by the time it ships.
That is a joke. © EDI
Still, it would be nice to know.
