Alright so I'm a few hours into the game, doing my little "initiation" for the gray wardens and I'm having trouble figuring out how tactics work. I understand the concept, but I'm having problems getting my companions to do what I want.
For example, one of them is a rogue like me, and I want to give him orders to attack at ranged UNTIL either he is attacked by a melee attacker or anyone else in the party is (in which case I want him to charge in with his daggers).
I thought I'd gotten it down, but evidently not because he just stands there... so I just put it at "Target Enemy: Any --- Attack" and left it at that... Can someone describe how to order a character to do the above sequence I described (in bold)? Thanks.
Also, how the hell do you get your party members to hold position? (while not yet in a battle) Is that even possible... I want to snoop around cloaked to get a feel for things and don't want the guys who can't cloak spoiling it...<_<

I only use one tactics option. There's a check box in the bottom left hand corner that disables it.

Set his behavior to ranged first.
-Self being attacked by Melee attack: Switch to Melee Weapon
-Ally being attacked by Melee attack: Switch to Melee Weapon
-Ally being attacked by Melee attack: Normal Attack
-Self surrounded by no enemies: Switch to Ranged Weapon
VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure these are in the correct places. I don't know what the rest of the tactics are so I'm leaving it to you to put them in the correct order. The game checks each tactic in order and as long as it isn't ready to be performed or is in performance it will move to the next tactic.
I.E.
Tactic One- Self: Any: Activate Healing Aura
Tactic Two- Ally: Health< 50: Use Heal
If healing aura is active or you don't have enough mana to activate it it will skip to tactic two.
To get allies to hold position when not in battle you can select it from the radial menu under the advanced option.
I'm also not 100% sure that the tactics I gave you will work as I like to micromanage just as much as I like to use tactics (I spend hours messing with them throughout the course of the game). You can look here for hints: http://dragonage.wik...om/wiki/Tactics

it does take a while to get used too.
I usually have. self heal weakest health poultice <50
if i have a healer it's then heal ally <50.
I make sure not to leave AoE spells that damage my party members in the tactics.
beyond that i usually tinker now and then but things like use mind blast or similar stun effects are always worthwhile to leave on the tactics.

Ya I'm starting to figure it out. It's kinda annoying that upgrading your tactics level doesn't affect the whole team...
I mean, I don't need tactics for myself lol, since I'm playing my own character (at least 95% of the time), while directing the others in critical moments with the pause.

XBOX 360 version.
Mine must be broken. I try to set for Behavior:Ranged Presets:Archer and any changes I make always goes to Presets:Custom. Why is this? If there are no presets in archer, shouldn't I be able to modify them?
I assumed that one could set different tactics for the different behaviors and presets, but the way it seems to be working the Presets and, especially, Behavior, seem to have no effect on the tactics.
By the way, I have noted comments about RTFM on tactics. For the XBOX 360 manual, there is no mention of tactics beyond the description of the "Select Tactics" button (Y) on pg.14, label number 28:"Open combat tactics menu" and label number 26:"Current combat tactics" so RTFM is moot.

The problems with this tactic setup are the behavior being set to "Ranged" and the "Ally being attacked by Melee Attack" condition not having the "Attack" action.Mabari Owns High Dragon wrote...

With ranged behavior, the first above all priorities of the AI, that I have found out, is to switch to a ranged weapon. Thus causing some confusion for the AI. The moment it switches to a melee weapon, the AI will immediately switch to a ranged one--locking down the AI into a paradox or whatever.
A better setup would be to set the behavior to "Default" or "Aggressive" and have your tactics like so (which I hope would work):
===
[Ally being Attacked by Attack Type - Melee: Switch to Melee Weapon]
[Enemy using Melee Attack: Attack]
[Enemy at Short Range: Attack]*
[Surrounded by No Enemies: Switch to Ranged Weapon]
===
In this order
The AI's "Default" and "Aggressive" behaviors have already been set to use melee weapons when the enemy comes at a close range and this is of utmost priority; just like a "Ranged" behavior set AI with ranged weapons.
As you would guess, with this tactics setup, the AI will switch to melee weapons when an ally is being attacked by a melee attacker, attack any melee attackers, and will switch back to ranged weapons when all melee attackers are dead.
*This tactic is optional, but recommended. With this, the AI will attack any upclose ranged attackers as well. Thus, when all melee attackers and close ranged attackers are dead, the AI will switch back to ranged weapons.
Be careful, however, as there will be a few problems. It's best to put that setup in that order and as the last four tactics in the tactics list, as Mabari Owns High Dragon has mentioned, it is all based on priorities and what order you have set the tactics up.
If the AI has ranged talents, it will use its archery talents (if set up in the tactics list) as long as A: their talents are ready and available for use and B: there are NO enemies at close range.
With melee talents, however, you will need to set the conditions for only opponents with melee weapons--making them only using them for melee attackers, as you would guess. Once all melee attackers are dead, the AI will switch back to ranged weapons.

I've had trouble with tactics from time to time, too.
I now use the custom settings (1,2, and 3) almost exclusively. But occasionally there is still an annoying problem with warrior-type characters that I have set to be archers reverting back to melee without any command from me.

Thank you to those who responded. I appreciate your help and putting up with my frustration and ignorance.
I am embarrassed that I did not read the whole thread. I did not see the link to the dragon age wiki in the post from "Mabari Owns High Dragon". I think it bears repeating because it sure helped me (e.g. what the defaults actually do):

So if you need some insight on tactics, point yourself in that direction.
