RPGs actually nearly own the "Adventure" catagory right from the start. Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, BGII, FF VII, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, ME II, Oblivion, Fallout, Fallout 3, KotOR, Kingdom Hearts, FF X, Fable, and on and on. Not all of those won, of course, but these are the majority of the games mentioned (and most likely were the "runners up").
It's not the art that is subjective, here, it's the classification used.

I'm happy to see a few somewhat hidden gems like Okami and Shadow of the Colossus in there. I feel they never received as much recognition as they deserved.
