I was messing around with my engineer lately and tried out neural shock. It was pretty good (and yelling "PAIN!!!" whenever I cast it is good fun) but since the engineer already has Cryo, I was unsure whether or not it would be worth having points in such similar skills, especially since Neural shock doesn't seem very reliable (although that may be that the enemy just has a very small sliver of armor left that I don't see) so are there any other good powers to look into for the engineer that won't overlap with my skillset too much?

Cryo works on all targets while neural shock is only organic.
I'd stick with cryo, reave is better than neural shock

OTOH, Neural Shock does go through defenses and has a very short cooldown.

Does Neural Shock go through defenses? I've hardly ever used it, but WOW, thats huge if it does.AK404 wrote...

Doesn't go through defenses, but staggers an enemy with defenses up. A nice bonus power to have even with cryo in the skill-set.

If you don't mind mixing in Biotic powers, then you should also think about Domination. This basically allows you to "hack" any enemy that doesn't have protections which can be very fun way to play. Only real downside is they immediately fall down and have to get back up then see another enemy to attack before finally starting to attack, thus making only the longest duration evolution workable. I ran a shotgun(GPS), and Domination Engineer through semi-recently and had an absolute blast, and for me it was one of the few Bonus powers that really made a difference in my survivability and fun factor.

No, it does not penetrate defenses. Not the last time I tested it, which was about 30 seconds ago.

Neural Shock also works on Krogans.

Neural Shock's speed gives it an appeal over Reave. They have the same cc effect, but very different uses.
Energy Drain is a good one for Engineers, as it's both a defense-breaker and defense-booster. Conflicts with Overload though.

Dominate (Total Control), Stasis (Ultimate CC), or Neural Shock (Purist).

Maybe flashbang? - not tried it with engineer, could be interesting.

Dominate is freaking awesome, provided you have enough talent points to use it effectively. flashbang is slightly redundant in my mind. if you want to cover a weakness grab an ammo power (Warp Ammo is best).
There's a section on engineers in the bonus powers guide linked in my sig, which might give you some food for thought.

I gave my Engineer one dot in GSB just in case.

When I played Engineer, on hardcore, the shield boosting powers just didn't last long enough under fire to be worth locking out my other powers for so long. I actually started with a shield boosting power and found it got me killed as much as anything, then tried flashbang and it was ok, but nothing stellar then finally moved to dominate for a great time. I just can't like having my powers locked down for 9 seconds when the bonus I get from that doesn't last half that time in combat.

I'm gonna go with Neural Shock for the Engineer; it has excellent duration and quick cooldown when chain-cast against organics. And when I really want to mess with synthetics, AI Hacking does the job surprisingly well.

I prefer an ammo power. Warp ammo.

Dominate Engineer was the funnest thing I ever played. People attacking each other, incineration blasts burning people up, attack drones debacling enemies in cover.....
Good times.

When I play Engineer, my bonus power is either Geth Shield Boost as both a panic button and a defense enhancer, warp ammo for barrier penetration, or armor piercing ammo for general damage enhancement.
My first choice is Geth Shield Boost. I can always get ammo powers from squadmates. Grunt and Jacob can give Incendiary ammo, Garrus can give AP ammo, Jack can give Warp ammo, and Thane can give Shredder ammo. Seeing how I run around with Garrus in my squad a lot, and how Jacob can get his ammo power early, I'm usually not without AP ammo or incendiary ammo.

Warp Ammo.
You got pyro for armor, overload to kill shields so warp ammo is what I choose to deal with barriers and you don't have to wait for the cool down once activated thus leaving all your other skills available.
I can't wait to see how the engineer turret works in ME3.

Dominate and AI hak coupled in one character is probably the most comical build you can have. It keeps me in tears every time I play. Once an enemy is striped down to health, you can take out an entire platoon with those powers.
