I downloaded CamStudio and it's very easy to use, however, when I play the AVI file after recording, it is very, very jumpy and has an abyssmal framerate.  If anyone has made trailers or video from gameplay with camstudio,  some advice would be very welcome.  Thanks.

You've ikely set the capture resolution high. It doesn't need to be high for YouTube type video.

I meant to say this before, but I think FRAPS is what most people use. I don't know if it's got all the same tools as CamStudio or whatever you're using. I've used FRAPS and it's pretty easy to use.

Thanks MC, I'll try that. I actually have had FRAPS on my computer from the start and never knew what it was for before.

When you use FRAPS are you able to record full screen at 30fps? With CamStudio, I have to change NWN2 to windows mode and shrink it to about 800x600 to get about 20 fps. If I went smaller I suppose I could do a little better, but it would be nice to be able to just record full screen.

If you have the free/trial version of FRAPS you will be limited to 30 second movies max (and I think they will have a watermark on the images). If you have the full retail version (which is somewhere around $30US) you have unlimited time and no watermark. The files it makes are HUGE. I recorded a 10 min video of in game action and the file was something like 500MB in size. Though that was done in full widescreed HD format. I used Windows Movie Maker to edit he file into another format which greatly reduced the file size and only took a few minutes to do. WMM gives you a handful of options as to what output you want (keep widescreen and/or HD, 800x600, etc.). Smaller files reduce the clarity of picture a bit of course. If you plan on posting the vid to YouTube, remember they have a 10 min limit on videos (so in WMM I edited mine to end at like 9 mins 58 secs).

Thanks for the info. I'm going to play with the free version of fraps tonight. For the time being, 30 sec. should be plenty for my purposes. I guess If I want to make a longer trailer when I get closer to release, I'll need to fork out the dough. Better start checking under couch cusions now...
