I have some questions about the abilities of Shepard's companions. In my first playthrough I just let them tag along and hoped that they would mind themselves. However, this time around I'm trying to make better use of them, tactically and using abilities. After coming from DAO, where you can use companions as if they were your own character, I feel quite constrained in ME. Especially with that tactics screen where you have to freeze the game to give them instructions, pointing exactly to where you want them carried out.

First, I am under the impression that companions wield whatever gun Shep is using. That is, if Shep whips out his shotgun the others follow suit, unless you specifically order them otherwise. Correct?

Whether the above is true or not. I think I've seen companions using guns that they are not supposed to. Such as Liara using a sniper. Do they use untrained weapons, and if yes are they under the same constraints as Shep (for instance a Vanguard Shep can't aim his sniper even if he tries to use it. The sniper in hands of a Vanguard is totally useless, is it the same for companions? Is there a way to make a character never try to use a gun he/she can't?

I try to give every character the best equipment. Shep gets first choice, of course, but I always try to have everyone else with the best shotgun, pistol, sniper, etc. they can. But is there really any point in giving a companion a good shotgun, for instance, if that is an untrained weapon for him/her?

Now about skills. Specifically, first aid. Some companions have this, but there doesn't seem to be a choice to make them use it in the tactical screen, and I don't think I've ever seen a companion using it. So what's the point in giving a companion skill points in first aid?
