Can your PC run this game at all, and if so, how well?  Let's include DA2 here also.

There are many forum messages in most game forums asking that question, and / or ignoring all national search engines, and asking what the game requirements are. There do not seem to be a great many of those in this particular (DAO) forum, although many of the members should have asked before making their purchases.

This forum doesn't require game registration.  The DA-2 Tech Forum does have that requirement, so trying for this type thread there isn't practical or useful, and the General Subject forum's inhabitants (unregistered DA-2) were very antagonistic about cohabiting with a test example for DA-2 in there.

You need to know what your hardware and software specifications are, to match to the chart I will insert for your use. I am including a link to an article about how you can collect the information.  We here on the Social Forums do not ever promote the web site operated by "System Requirement Labs" because they are wrong far too often to be trustworthy.

If you choose not to learn enough about PCs to collect information on your own, there is a tool somewhat similar to the SR Labs, but far more accurate.  It is the "Game-o-Meter" at YouGamers, however, if that is your situation, it would be far better for you to avoid PC games, and choose console-based games instead.

Here is the first link:

http://www.pcworld.c...de_your_pc.html

This is Part One of three parts.  Please don't become easily impatient.  We are volunteers.  This is a Self-Help tech forum for gamers, answered by gamers, and we aren't available here 24/7.  If you have questions other than about performance, start another message thread, instead of cluttering this one up with detours.  Thank you.

Can my (your) PC run this game, part two, the CORRECTED minimum game requirements:

Here are the minimum requirements for XP and Vista (notice the egregious error there)

Windows XP Minimum Specifications
OS: Windows XP with SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Single (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.0Ghz or greater
RAM: 1 GB or more
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space
Video: ATI Radeon X850 256MB or greater (this is clearly wrong)
NVIDIA GeForce "6600 GT" 128MB or greater (and this one is more wrong)

(Note: IMO, the practical choices for the two video cards above should be the Radeon X800 Pro, and the Geforce 6800 GS, at least, for small textures - it will take a Radeon X1650 XT (or X1800 GTO, same thing, almost) for medium or better textures)

INTEL'S GARBAGE (Graphics Chip) IS NOT SUPPORTED, and there is an interesting possibility that male party characters are easier to choose than female when using substandard video solutions, such as Intel's.

Windows Vista/Windows 7 Minimum Specifications
OS: Windows Vista with SP1, Windows 7
CPU: Intel Core 2 Single (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.0Ghz or greater
RAM: 1.5 GB or more
Video: ATI Radeon "X1550" 256MB or greater (this is OBVIOUSLY wrong)
(*VERY* stupid here, -- should be the X1650 XT, since the 1550 is only a renamed X1300)
see this ( http://www.gpureview...1=472&card2=385 )
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256MB or greater
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space

Can my (your) PC run this game, part three, the form (IMO) that the specification lists should follow:

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon X2 / Pentium D / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Speed:  ?.? Ghz
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Win7, Vista ?
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024 ? )
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD, so please answer which of them you have)
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 6670 / Geforce GT 450
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.??
. . (please use the numbers, and dates, *not* the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Model:

(And this is only for the raw hardware & driver variations.  Potential software conflicts are far more likely to be game play problems, and developers cannot test for all possible program loads.)

If you want to append such a spec list here, feel free.  Please don't become easily impatient.  We are volunteers.  This is a Self-Help tech forum for gamers, answered by gamers, and we aren't available here 24/7.  If you have questions other than about performance, start another message thread, instead of cluttering this one up with detours, and keep clear in your mind that the Official Tech support is all on EA's help pages, it is not in the forums.

P. S.  Please use every day business style paragraph breaks, punctuation, and spelling.

yeah gorath i can run it pretty well i have noticed a couple problems though:

1. during the dialouge cut sceens i sometimes get a glitchy sort of pause when an npc is *just* finishing their current line before it cuts to someone else *really annoying* and totally kills immersion. could be a defrag/pagefile issue though.

2. i got some tearing on the bridge at osgart when it first loaded but i havent noticed it much since. i do have vysnc off though.

here are my specs for the survey:

dao ultimate from ea store ea download manager for 19.99 came as version 1.04

all settings maxed but no aa/af no vsync

intel m25 80GB SSD
intel Q6600 2.8GHZ quad core
corsair h50
corsair dominator 6GB
evga classified x58
evga gtx 460 1GB
on board sound
coolermaster haf-x
sennheiser HD650 headphones
sony GDM-FW900 CRT 2304x1440 @80hz

Hmmm? Thank you, but "survey"? You don't seem to fit the target audience, who want to run the game, but either haven't bought it yet, or when it doesn't run, want to double-check their systems against the requirements.

Remember, the game's own configuration utility keeps a record of your system components for you to examine. You do not need, and should not rely on, a site that is as ridiculously inaccurate as SR Labs ("Can you Run It?" at System Requirements Labs).

Anyone who (IMO) is determined to avoid learning about what is inside of a PC should probably restrict themselves to console platforms, but when such technophobes insist on trying PC based games, there is the Game-o-Meter function on the YouGamers site that is a great deal more truthful.

Since I was just commenting to a member of the forums about how poor a Geforce 8400 is that ME-2 names it as inadequate in the official requirements for that game, I was reminded of this offer that no one has accepted so far . .

These things are cumulative. While handling a question from a latest of new arrivals, I was looking at and remembering the DA2 Demo's release about three or four months ago. Both games use the same basic game engine, making the single Demo more or less usable for both games.

One difference is the "Small Textures" option for really old video cards was removed, so that 128 MB video cards shouldn't be able to work, nor should any of the Radeon Xn00 generation be able to work in the Demo, while both are able to run at Low Settings in DAO.

I am very interested in finding out if the "Llano" APU from AMD is going to be equal to the minimum ("Trinity" should be, certainly, but we can't buy laptops with that one in them yet).

Yesterday, I was suggesting that two recent message threads' authors would have been better off to have replied to this topic before buying copies of DAO; I think that I intended the three (updates to those two threads and to this one) to show up together, and was distracted.

People keep showing up complaining about the brand new computers they just bought not working in these Bioware games, and it often turns out that they have *not* bought a full powered PC at all, but rather a mini-notebook, or "NetBook" version of a laptop, which has about the same performance as a ten year old regular PC. Those people needed to check things out in a thread like this one before buying the games.

Jafroboy, the archives exist and are maintained to answer questions that may go unanswered when no one is around. You were lucky just now that I came though here.

Your HD 34xx whatever is meant for business, not games = charts, graphs, presentations, and spreadhseets.

You can usually ignore SR Labs. However, they are absolutely correct about Intel. They produce worthless video products.

What's throwing me is that I've been running Alpha Protocol on nearly max settings without issue.

Alpha Protocol isn't a Bioware game, it doesn't share anything in common with any Bioware game, so no one should  try comparing anything from it. The two games have no ground for comparison. None. You may compare DAO to DA2 only, but not even either of the Mass Effect games shares engines with DAO / DA2.

Since the DA-2 (unregistered gamers) General Subjects Forum's inhabitants seriously resisted sharing space with a similar thread there, if anyone from there wants to ask if their PC is good enough, or what kind of settings to expect, to predict for DA2, ask that here, and I, or someone else in this forum, will see about assisting you.

    * Recommended:

Video: ATI 3850 512 MB or greater
Video: NVIDIA 8800GTS 512 MB or greater
DirectX 11: ATI 5850 or greater
DirectX 11: NVIDIA 460 or greater

      Minimum:
OS: Windows XP 32-bit with SP3
OS: Windows Vista 32-bit with SP2
      OS: Windows 7
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo (or equivalent) running at 1.8 GHz or greater
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 (or equivalent) running at 1.8 GHz or greater
RAM: 1 GB (1.5 GB Vista and Windows 7)
Video: Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB (should be 2600 XT or X1800 GTO)
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS 256 MB cards (unless this should be 7800 GS)
Disc Drive: DVD ROM drive required
      Hard Drive: 7 GB
Sound: Direct X 9.0c Compatible Sound Card Windows Experience Index: 4.5

Laptop or mobile versions of the above supported video cards

While the subject is fresh, this thread will also function just fine when DA3 is getting closer to its own release, if there is no welcome for anything similar in a new General Subjects forum for potential buyers of the next sequel.

Hey Gorath, many thanks for your efforts in helping on these forums...
Your suggestions were great for DAO, now I'm trying to see if I bother buying DA2 (or more honestly getting my kids to buy it for me for Xmas...)

I meet the minimum specs - as far as I can tell, but just.  How well does the game play at that level  I don't mind turning down special effects if it makes the game play well:

I have a Intel Core 2 6300 1.86ghz
4 gig of ram
ATI 4670 vid card (upgraded for DAO)  1 GB of ram on board

Any comments on playability at what are essentially the minimum requirements?

 oh yes... running Vista SP2

You are in fine shape on the GPU, as you probably guessed. Just about the only noticeable difference in the two from a game owners' point of view is the need to upgrade video from Dx9.O"b" to Dx9.0"c". If anything, DA2 has better optimization, so if that CPU was doing all right for you (yes it seems marginal), it should still be able to satisfy you with the sequel.

But that processor will have to be replaced before DA3 come along, I'm sure.

So, I'm considering buying the PC version of DA:O... but I'm not particularly knowledgeable regarding PC hardware, and I'd appreciate it if someone could help me determine whether my graaphics card and processor are suitable for running the game. My processor is an "AMD processor V120 (2.2GHz)", and my graphics card is an "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250."

I meet all of the other requirements as listed on Steam as far as I'm aware, I'm just unsure about the two listed above. It might be worth mention that I can run the Character Creator pretty smoothly... but other than that, that's about all I can tell you.

An HD 4250 is not a proper video graphics card.  Is that a desktop PC?
