This made me laugh... ME1 outsells any action game on Steam today. ME2 isn't even in the top 10. Obviously it has to do with EA's sales action today. It's still funny to see it up there. :P

I very much agree with OPs sentiments. For me the ME games are adventure games. Not in the sense that they have 1980's puzzles, but in the sense that I'm having an adventure when I play them. As long as I feel immersed in the game world this kind of game works for me.

Both ME1 and ME2 did the trick for me, but with very different means. Successfully creating an illusion of being a starship captain or a squad commander is what mattered to me. I think often the minor features are important in this case. Having to read my email, or visiting the science console does a lot to the immersive feel. Being able to pretend to give Joker a pat on the back is important as well. Checking Liara's locker to make sure her pistol mods are in working condition. (You really have to be on Liara's back with those mods because she tend to get sloppy).

Having a big environment does a lot for the immersion, even if parts of the environment doesn't have much use as game mechanics. Thats why I hope ME3 will have some suitable management elements, some decent paperwork in between missions. I also hope it will have larger areas that encourages a bit of solo roleplaying.

I remember as a kid, some friends and I positioned chairs and used boards of wood to act as starship consoles. Then we roleplayed Star Trek, or Mass Effect or Star Wars or whatever it was we pretended to do. Mass Effect is really just an advanced extension of that.

It being only 5 dollars for the sale means people that probably won't ever play it will still pick it up just because it's so dirt cheap, a few people on my friends list have had both games for awhile now and have very few hours logged on both

Mass Effect 1 for $5 probably helped move some yesterday.

Here you go BioWare, here's your next PR line:

'Mass Effect is not an RPG or a Shooter game; it is more than that. It is An Experience.'

ME2 is a shooter with light RPG elements. ME1 was neither a shooter nor a RPG, it was more of a experience that involved many more elements than ME2 had, although the execution was not as high quality as in ME2. Still, I prefer the larger experience without the obvious genre ties of ME2.

You are funny.

ME2 is only classified as an RPG by the Steam store. That's why it doesnt show up in the Action subsection. ME1 is classified as both an RPG and an action game.

ME2 is the number 1 in the RPG subsection. :)

Meh, Mass Effect 3 is going to suck. Bioware has proven lately that they don't care about the fans which they shouldn't. It's all about those benjamins. Dollar dollar bills y'all. I imagine ME3 will have a zombie map pack dlc reasonably priced at $15. The levels well be more linear than linear. It was a good run Bioware. Now you just gotta figure out how to get people to prestige in your games and keep them playing online for months until you can release a slightly improved sequel with a 4 hour campaign.

Well played Bioware, suck in the core players with a unique single player experience earning it great acclaim then make a sequel that is so unoriginal and linear that stupid people love it cuz it has lazersssss. Brilliant.

That would imply a terrible sense of humor.

Mass Effect already has zombies in it, does that mean...
Oooh the plot thickens, the conspiracy was there all along.:bandit:

I agree with what the OP wrote.  I see genres as a means for me to find what i like, to single out what i want to spend my times on. For games i mostly look for RPGs, and to me the ME series is an RPG, you assume a role and you get several choices how to act and play out your Shepard's personality. What others see the ME series as is entirely up to them.

I also feel the same way as the OP. There is really no other game i have played (and i have played a lot), that makes me feel like when i play ME games.  ME gives me the feeling of this vast unverse that i can just get lost in.

Yes, there are fault in both games, which i am pretty aware of but i think Bioware have done a very good job with the ME series to have so many people play them over and over again.  I am of the mentality that as long as a game doesn't have serious faults i let it slide (and if there is i mostly just don't play the game), since making things perfect is impossible, there will be faults.

I agree. I mean it's not like they didn't deliver what they promised.
A dialogue heavy game with shooterbased combat. So what if it's considered a shooter then it's a good shooer. Heck being a good game is enough, being the best in recent memory is better.

I agree with this sentiment. Mass Effect is an experience. One that will most definitely end satisfyingly.

Maybe its just a game. More than that, an experience.

*snipped for brevity*

I think if we argue too much over whether the game should be more shooter or more RPG, we may miss the point entirely. With each game, Bioware has gotten closer to making Mass Effect the way they imagined it, and making the best experience possible, regardless of genre.

Indeed.

People worry too much about genres and subgenres and then don't end up enjoying the game because of it.

Heavy Rain is an example of this. People are so focused on criticising the lack of gameplay, the way it tries to be a movie and etc. that they don't realize that it's still an interactive medium made for a person to enjoy...just like every other video game even if you don't think it's a true video game...

Mass Effect..

well..

it's Mass Effect.

It's a Role-playing Third Person Shooter. Both games are. Mass Effect 2 has the choices, the character building of Mass Effect 1. Ignore the stupid 'stats', those don't make a real RPG. There are games out there that have stats, and pre-defined combat, but they have a story that has no real choices. That's not a true RPG in my opinion.

Look at Fallout: New Vegas. That's a game that has choices. It also has stats, skills, and perks. It's an RPG. But I only care about the stats because they increase my skill in certain areas of combat. The real meat is the choices, and the story that you can make your character in.

In my opinion, Mass Effect 2 is as much of an RPG as Mass Effect 1.

But it's Mass Effect. I don't care what genre it is, it's a great game.

Yeah, OP. Spot on. I discovered this series a month ago and i have played through the first one 3 times all ready and the second one 4 times. This is my best spent money ever, hands down.

I'm 28 years old and haven't been so excited about the next installment of a game since i was a kid. My hope is that it rules. This is how good these two games are. Actually caring about a freaking sequel :D Feels good :D.
