If it comes out this year, I wouldn't rule out Diablo 3. Still, my money is on Portal 2.

I haven't tried it yet, but is it really that awesome, even though the game is so short compared to a game like Skyrim which can last hundreds or thousands of hours for a single playthrough?

I want to try it, but it seems like it is incredibly short with limited replay value.

it wasn't nearly as short as portal 1.  also, its time isn't padded with endless hours of wandering around in the middle of nowhere like bethesda games typically are.  It's quality over quantity.

It will be between Portal 2 and Skyrim most likely.

First of all, Assassin's Creed: Revelations ≠ Assassin's Creed 4.

Anyway, most likely Skyrim, maybe The Witcher 2.

Portal 2 and Shogun 2 are great, F.E.A.R. 3, Rage, Human Revolution and Arkham City most likely will be too and Brink is sure to get accolades at least for its movement system, but I don't see any of them (let alone the others I'm looking forward to, e.g. AGoT:Genesis, Tropico 4, Stronghold 3, Sengoku, Magna Mundi, King Arthur II,... [all AFAIK still slated for 2011]) being serious competition for inter-genre GOTY awards. Without both Skyrim and ME3 we would have a serious competition going on this year and with both in we would at least have a heavy one-on-one fight, but with (only) one of them dropping out the other seems a crystal clear bet to me.

Portal 2, Skyrim, or Uncharted 3 most likely. Maybe a darkhorse run from something like Battlefield 3 or LA: Noire (in the same way that Red Dead Redemption was a surprise strong challenger for GOTY awards in 2010).

For those of you who have played it, how much overall playtime would you say that you can you get from Portal 2, including replays and multiplayer.

Also, what is the typical retail price? Is it a bit cheaper than most retail AAA games (less than $60)?

Are there going to be user-created content mods that provide more replayability?

Even in my junior high days playing NES, I don't think I have ever before purchased a game that short.

I generally prefer games that provide at least a few hundred hours of content either in a single playthrough or replays, for example

DAO: ~150 hrs (including DLC)
DA2: ~250 hrs (vanilla version, without DLC)
FO3: 120-150 hrs (GOTY, including DLC)
FNV:  ~250 hrs (without DLC)
Oblivion: over 500 hrs (GOTY, with mods)
Morrowind: probably over 200 hrs
Civ4: over 300 hrs
Civ5: 200-300 hrs

It's very difficult for me to wrap my mind around a game that lasts only 9 hours, no matter how enjoyable those 9 hours might be. If it were very, very cheap, I might be more inclined to consider it, but 9 hours sounds like something I would play on my iPhone to pass the time on a plane, etc.

Even an indie game like Magicka, which only costs $10, provides much more than 9 hours of entertainment value. I've played around 30+ hours and the co-op is still lots of fun.

The one which will probably recieve most nominations is Skyrim.

Depends though, if the dumbing down isn't going over the limit. Lots of people still have a sour taste in their mouth from DA2, and that could hurt Skyrim.

Why would that hurt Skyrim? Dragon Age and BioWare don't have anything to do with Skyrim.

I think what Shiroukai is trying to say is that because a lot of dumbing down in DA2 didn't go well with a lot of fans, that Skyrim could make fans just as mad if Bethesda scales down the game too much (and therefore not learning from Bioware's mistakes).

That is in itself an opinion itself. I acknowledge that many people think DA2 is great.

EDIT: I'm also of the opinion that no company streamlines more CORRECTLY than Bethesda (I loved Morrowind and I loved Oblivion even more because imo they streamlined the right things and added good stuff). So I personally have faith in Bethesda and Skyrim and will most likely preorder if I have the money to.

Oh, I read that incorrectly. Sort of. I don't see any reason to believe Skyrim is severely 'streamlined' compared to previous games though.

If you just breeze through the single player once, then its likely not worth the full $60 if you're really worried about playing it for hundreds of hours. It really depends on how quickly you get through the puzzles- it took me about 12 hours for one run through the single player but I haven't touched the co-op yet.

That said, its a REALLY good 12 hours or so. And if you're getting it on the PC its likely there will be mods and stuff and Valve likes giving out free stuff so they may add new levels for free.

Amazon had Portal 2 for about $30 or so not too long ago, but its back at the normal price now- or at least its about $45 for PC. I'm sure it will go on sale at different places and I'd guess whenever Steam has their Summer sale in June or July it'll go on sale then too. But its a great game with a really great story. And its funny as hell.:)

This is pretty much my problem with Portal 2.  The first one got away with it cause it was packaged with other games but 2 doesn't have that luxury and so I gotta be harder on it.
But apperantly the story went over my head because I'm too stupid to think this game is GOTY worthy.

I really hope that BF3 knocks down CoD (which its marketing aims for), although it is hard to imagine now. It would be great to see that one become a surprise GotY. I've always been a fan of the series. I played every title in the series, except 2142 only as a beta. I played all CoD titles until MW1. After that I felt that they didn't bring much new to the series.

On the other hand I would be happy when Skyrim got it. If that turns out to be a great game then the 5 years of development show its dedication to the genre.

The Witcher 2 getting a GotY will be hard, because it has features that a lot of people see as controversial. CDPR is one of the few companies that are dedicated to both the story and the fans and that's in ther favor. Perhaps CDPR being an European company gives hem a slight disadvantage.

The new Deus Ex looks stunning as well, but I didn't look much into that one yet.

First of all, I'm amazed at how you manage to squeeze 250 hours out of DA2.

I got Portal when they were handing it out for free and loved it to death. Anyway, Portal 2's single-player campaign took me 8 hours, but they were such great 8 hours that it's one of the very few times I neither minded paying full price before nor after finishing a rather short campaign. Now, all I have left to do is to find that hidden test chamber, find someone for co-op and wait for (free) DLC. I doubt it will leave my HDD any time soon.
