I'm the perpetual beginner at the age of 87 and have thoroughly enjoyed Origins since I bought it recently.  But had the usual trouble with present day games in getting a clear manual givijng basic instructions on what keys or mouse actions I should use to do the basic stuff.  Could one of you experienced guys tell me how I get the pinch of ashes, which is in my inventory, on to the Erl's sick body?  I don't seem to be able to move it anywhere, not to the bottom slots where I can place heals etc from a different section of the inventory, or stir it into action with left clicks, right clicks, double clicks, sliding, or whatever.  I must admit that neither have I found out how to make potions, poisons or traps yet but that's a bigger question.  Sorry for such ignorance, but having gone through such a long and enjoyable story to get these ashes it's very irritating not to be able to revive the poor old Erl!

It's a quest item. Talk to Teagan and you'll proceed with the quest.

For potions/poisons/traps you need to put points into the talent for whichever one you want. Mages/Warriors get a point every three levels, rogues every 2. Once you have points in the talent you should have a shortcut for it (heralism/poison making/trap making) on your skill bar (it will look like the picture of what you have put points in). Click that and find the materials for whatever potions you need. You can also teach it to your party members, same thing, teach them it, then take them out of camp,then click on them and they will have it on their bar. Im assuming you are playing pc here, if you do you can stop reading. if you are on console press LT i think it is and the radial menu pops up. You need to find it in there.

Normally, if you have obtained the ashes from Andraste's Urn, all you need to do is initiate the conversation with Bann Teagan in the main hall of Redcliffe Castle. The rest will go automatically.

But be carfeul, are we really talking about the right ashes here?
Note that there are two quest items in the game that sound dangerously similar, but are two very different things.

• There is Pouch of Ashes, which is a pretty worthless item you find early in the game. It is used for a small quest in the Korcari wilds. You sprinkle it on a pile of stones and (instead of granting you a wish as promised) an Elemental appears and tries to kill you. You kill it, end of that (rather stupid) quest.
  
• And then there is Pinch of Sacred Ash, which is a small quantity of ashes taken from Andraste's Urn. You can only acquire this at the end of a long quest chain which [===SPOILER== ends on a mountaintop in the east of Ferelden. You will have gone through riddles, puzzles and even walked naked through a wall of living fire. After all that you arrive at the Urn of Andraste. You then have to click on the Urn, to acquire this "Pinch of Sacred Ash". If you do not do this and just leave after the gauntlet, you will not have this item, yet.

If you really have the second item and nothing happens when you talk to Bann Teagan, then it seems that your game is bugged.

While this is spoilers - note that there are two similar plot items: pouch of ashes and pinch of sacred ash. You need the latter for the Arl.

Thank you so much, guys. I should have remembered the old maxim - if nothing happens look around and talk to people. Thanks to Digi I talked to Teagen and am moving forward again. There is no bug in my inventory - you just have to do more to be able to use some of them. Grateful to learn the way out of my frustration!

Cormorant, check the wiki site link in my signature. It's a big help with this game, especially for quests such as this if you happen to be stuck.
