What I'm about to talk about is pure speculation:

• What I speculate is that your team will have 2 or 3 base members that will stay with you all the way, in my opinion that will be Ashley/Kaidan, James Sanders, and Liara.
• So far what's been confirmed is that all your party member from ME1 are returning as possible party members (providing they did not die) apart from Wrex. What I speculate is that if they did die we will be given replacement characters to fill in their positions on the team like say if Tali died we will get Kal'Reeger or if say Garrus died we will get another character.
• I also believe that those characters since I believe they have roles in other conflicts (Tali/Quarians and the geth) are going to be optional characters. For instance in the Quarian vs Geth conflict we will come to a point where we will have to choose one race or the other which will get us a companion such as Legion if we supported the geth and Tali if we supported the Quarians. Or provided theres an option to resolve the conflict peacefully for both sides we have the option of one or te other to choose between.
• I believe that some characters will appear as a temporary companion but depending on how you handle missions you can recruit them.
