Gameplay slowed after uploading Achievements?

I have looked around the forum to the answer to this specific question but can't find it - so I apologize if this has been asked elsewhere.

After weeks of fast and smooth gameplay the game has literally overnight become very slow and clunky for me, with what looks like a major drop in frame rate, and noticeably slower opening of inventory and character sheets etc. The only related action I have taken was to log on while the game was loaded to update Achievements to my profile here. I had previously played 'logged out' after the initial game registration process.

My system, which I had initially thought would be borderline for this game, but has been running perfectly on medium settings until now - is:

Dual Core x 2.2 GHZ
RAM Mem 3.0 G
Graphics NVIDIA 8600M GT
OS Vista 32-bit

Could the seemingly unrelated act of uploading Achievements have slowed the game somehow? If anyone has advice or a solution I would be grateful. Posted Image

Hmmm... that's a head-scratch-er. First, though, thanks for including a detailed report and your hardware specs. When did you log in to update achievements versus when you noticed the slowdown? How much time elapsed? And, along those lines, are you still logging in during play, or have you resumed the practice of being logged out?

I noticed the slow down during my first play after the Achievement upload (minutes before), and I am back to playing (well, trying) unlogged in. It actually seems to be worsening if anything. Turning down settings has no effect, nor does restarting. I don't think it is either the settings or my system, which, as I said, has been fine until now.

If I could reverse it, I would.

It may help to eliminate some other factors as we try to troubleshoot this:

1) You're using a laptop, I assume?  I would suggest monitoring your hardware temps.  If there's a lot of dust building up in the machine, they system could throttle back performance as part of the cooling process.  This is easy to dismiss but more common than most people think.

2) You've added mods to the game recently.  Something that has replaced the default textures or effects could, potentially, impact performance.

3) You've simply reached a part of the game that's much more graphically demanding (like the Denerim Market Disctrict).

4) You've recently changed/updated graphics drivers.

5) You've recently installed some other, unrelated software on your machine, and it is loading applications at startup into the background that is impacting service.

If you can eliminate the above, then we can proceed to consider your original premise with more confidence.  BTW, have all your achievements indeed synched online?  I wonder if the slowdown is caused by something in the program trying to "phone home" while you're playing?  Just idle speculation.

1. I'm using a laptop, yes. It is slightly raised on the desk to allow airflow underneath, It barely gets warm to the touch after hours of play. And it is cleaned regularly.  I don't believe it is suddenly a heat or dust issue.

2. No, no mods added for this game at all.

3. I'm on my 4th or 5th playthrough, and have therefore been through all 'graphically demanding' areas before without a hitch. I'm currently in the entrance to Jarvia's hideout with this playthrough, not a particularly demanding area, but I've gone to other areas to check the issue, and it is quicksand everywhere. A small fight with 3 or 4 thugs involved watching the slowest rogue in Ferelden beat up some guys covered in molasses. Wearing the unsought after Dwarven Boots Of Glue.

4. No, I updated drivers some time ago, no recent activity there. And not so long ago that they are out of date.

5. No, no recent installations. For some time I've used a programme that actually limits unnecesary start ups, but began using that well before I had issues with this game.

I presume by 'synched online' you mean uploaded to this profile. I had the one session logged in and now my profile on this site contains all my Achievements to date. Since then I've reverted to being unlogged in.

I might try some of my other saved profiles and see if it exists there too, and log in again to see if there is further 'uploading' that needs to occur to clear something from the game files. I presume that's what you mean by 'phoning home'.

Thanks for the response and suggestions.

Edited to add: the problem also exists in other saved games and other characters, and at whatever location they are saved. I also 'logged in' for some time to allow for any further uploading that may have needed to occur. No improvement and game now essentailly unplayable.
