In ME1? I'd say out of those 3 the sentinel is my favorite, but the engineer is a lot of fun as well.

If you're playing on the xbox and give a hoot about achievements, I recommend the Engineer so you can get the AI Hacking one. If you don't care about that nonsense, the Infiltrator is a solid bet. Difficulty level may determine your weapon choice.

Out of those 3, I recommend Infiltrator (which is sad since I despise them in ME2).  Of the 3, they have the best DPS and survivability.  Be sure to take the AI Hacking talent as your bonus, if it's available.

I also recommend Infitrator with Hacking. In fact I recommend going through and using Hacking 75 times as an Engineer if you haven't already. That took me a little over an hour personally I believe. But it's really worth it as a bonus skill. Note that it's for the passive buff, not for the actual Hacking skill.

As for which weapon to use, I prefer to go purely with pistols. Level it up all the way though because Marksman is what makes it good. You should be using Marksman every chance you get with Pistols. Furthermore, Commando will increase your effectiveness with pistols a great deal, so that comes highly recommended.

You could never go wrong with sentinel. ;D

In me1, it's a balanced class that uses its multiple powers to control the battlefield. In me2, you can either become an unstoppable tank (using assault armor and guardian defender) or control the battlefield even further (and in more fun ways) using a plethora of skills given to you (while using power armor and either maxed defenders).

That, and being a bastion sentinel with specialization in stasis is just amazing. xD

You found a way to make stasis useful in ME1?  Wow.  I'm impressed.  I gave up on it to the point I don't even let Kaidan have it.

You can damage people through Bastion Stasis. Squadmates cannot be Bastions however, so no wonder you gave up on Kaidan's Stasis.

If you have already unlocked AI hacking, infiltrator is indeed a very good choice, with hacking as a bonus, it brings most of the good stuff from an engineer and has medium armor, immunity and a sniper rifle. The only thing missing is neural shock, which you can do without with 0 difficulty.

Sentinel is also a really solid choice, especially with either a bonus weapon or singularity as a bonus. (If you take another power skip neural shock, to avoid the power wheel bug.)

Infiltrator is officially going to be my last ME1 character ever. Took me a long time to decide on the class. Going with Commando and Hacking.

I'm a bit weird about the build. I kind of want it to do the most damage possible, so I want Spectre Training 11 or 12 (even though it probably make little sense). Apart from that, I want medium armor and I want to max tech abilities and pistols (skipping sniper rifles), but I am missing something like three points. So annoying.

But I take it the extra 3 points of shield boost from Electronics make no real difference when you have Immunity. And this way my tech abilities are at their maximum.

Electronics and decryption past nine are indeed pretty much pointless. Yes spectre past 4 is really generally pointless as well. But the game is forgiving enough you can get by with a build that is a little suboptimal.

I'm of the pretty firm opinion that the optimal build for infiltrator is this one:

Pistols - 12
Sniper Rifles - 12
Tactical Armour - 8
Fitness - 12
Electronics - 9
Decryption - 9
Damping - 12
Commando - 12
Spectre Training - 4
Hacking - 12

It does everything an infiltrator should.

Here are the number just for a thought.

With Spectre 11 and max damage pistol build, long service medal, renegade damage bonus, 2 rail extension VII, tungsten or shredder Vii (as appropriate) and master markman active on a spectre 10 pistol, your dps is 739.7775

For the same setup with spectre 4 your dps is 719.60175

So for the extra 7 skill points you only get 20.18 extra dps. It's a pretty high price to pay for an extra 2% of damage.

I'm very well aware of that particular build as I've been reading the ME forums (old and new) longer than I've been posting here. It's a great build.

My variant isn't really suboptimal though, considering you don't actually need sniper rifles for anything (outside of the odd situation where your pistols are overheated and you don't want to spend that time on tech attacks). My first infiltrator build was pretty much what you posted there. I ended up not using sniper rifles though, only really to see how grotesque one-shot kills I could get with High Explosive X + dual Rail Extensions. But for quick killing, pistols all the way.

But this time I'm thinking of maxing damage just for the sake of doing it. And because I never really liked sniper rifles in ME1. But somehow no matter which class I pick for ME1, I seem to be missing just 2 or 3 points for what I want.

OP the most fun I had during a ME1 run out of those three classes was my most recent playthrough, a Shotgun Bastion Sentinel.  I detailed my build and experiences with that class already in another post here if curious, though feel to ask anything in this thread if you wish.  Bastion Stasis, Barrier, Lift, Carnage, and Sabotage were my bread and butter abilities, with some Throws and Overloads thrown in for good measure.
