I wonder if there are any tips about which weapon to equip on our squadmates. Surely some don't really make for many choices, but most can spec into more than one weapon and I was asking myself which are our optimal choices.

This is mostly regarding not only the game's mathematical rules but its mechanics... For example, I have the impression Assault Rifles are rather disappointing at squadmates hands since they just shoot it in small bursts; while Shotgun or Sniper Rifles, even if low RoF, make a good impact when they hit - and may send enemies flying if the proper Ammo is equipped. I also notice Pistol is one of the best weapons for Shepard - my favorite one actually - but I dunno how it would go on squadmates.

So, put short - which weapons you guys reccomend for squadmates, and why?

Personally I run Assault rifles for those who can use it, shotguns for backup and certain situations and pistols only for those who have nothing else, since I really don't want to have to activate marksman for 2-3 characters. It seems to me, and it may just be my imagination, that companions shoot until they reach a certain heat range and then let it cool down, making bursts, and I think they shoot longer when you give them a properly outfitted gun that doesn't overheat, but again, it may just be my imagination.

As far as making people fly, the only one reliably doing that is explosive ammo, and that to me is a waste of cooldown. People always say it gives +500 concussion and damage and that isn't true. Explosive ammo gives +500 force and only +29% damage for the +500 cooldown. To me I would rather put more bullets downrange than to shoot and wait and wait and shoot again. The only way it really helps is knocking people out of cover, but most of the time you can't shoot again fast enough to really take advantage of them being out of cover, unless you are using it as a short range carnage blast. I personally like the the Schredder/Tungsten +40(or around that) damage, used with Frictionless materials X(+5 damage) and Scram Rail X(+25 or there abouts) damage. You lose a slight bit per shot, but you can shoot just about constantly with this setup, and on my infiltrator I am able to just hold the fire button and keep shooting forever, which is a really good amount of damage from a distance.

You know, I did a little experiment on my previous Shepard on Hardcore, during Pinnacle Station.

Wrex and Tali, both with shotguns and the uber knockback ammo mod; and Shepard with his main weapon.
I had similar results with Sniper Garrus instead of either

The shotgun crew kind of worked as a quick CC by dropping everyone to the ground. Isnt like its lethal, but its make THEM less lethal, buying me time to either unload or snipe them to death.

Also, I'm not too far off on this Insanity play of mine, but I feel like the idea of "Tank" is overrated. I mean, on insanity you can't soak damage for too long; and if you do, who does the killing anyways?

I wish there was a way to respec your characters mid-game. But oh well. Just hope to finish it soon and give ME2 a go - its sitting on my desk for a week now!

It's funny, this playthrough, I was noticing my squadmates knocking down enemies much more often, and more importantly, not getting in my fraking line of fire. I didn't think to check what weapon they were using because I was just happy things were going so well. Apparently they're both using sniper rifles, though neither is actually trained in them. Not sure how they defaulted to the rifle though. In any case, yeah, I can definitely recommend your strategy of setting them up to knock enemies down instead of killing them.

BUT - they do kill them. Especially Garrus; I lost count on how many mobs I stopped attacking leaving them at 30% or so, and watched Garrus blow their brains.

Also, quoting a particularly interesting signature, "Krogans have four testicles so they could feel less inferior to Garrus".

With a high level soldier or infiltrator, with good armor, (read colossus x), master immunity and a couple of medical exoskeletons, the tank concept is very much doable,  There was one guy on the old forums that did an experiment with a shocktrooper soldier, pretty much the ultimate tank.  He was able to survive somewhere in the range of 20-25 hits from a thresher maw in melee.

I've done some playthroughs with a high level soldier on insanity.  The only mission that killed me was the Luna mission when I got stun locked by the rocket drones and couldn't reactivate immunity.

For Pinnacle station survival mode I had a time of over 30 minutes, before I just gave up, changed out my armor and didn't activate immunity.  So tank is very, very effective.  As far as the killing goes, you're perfectly capable of shooting, not just being a damage sponge.  You can be a damage sponge that has a higher damage output than the main gun on the Mako.

While I do see your point, you probably agree that by the time I have all that I'm around level what, 58? I dont really want to beat the game so that I can... beat the game. I'm fine with a second playthrough (new game +) to get things going. But wipe the entire galaxy to farm levels just so I can yell "MWAHAHA UNKILLABLE" to the few creatures left just isnt my thing.

And what you said about the Mako is very true. And very, very disappointing.

You can become effectively invincible by the mid-30s: basically as soon as you get that talent that improves your immunity CD so Immunity is up 100% of the time. There are very few situations where you can actually die: husk explosions and multiple elite geth are pretty much the only things that could hurt me. Or being stunned while immunity wears off.

The idea of using knockdown weapons on squaddies seems like a pretty decent idea. I just had them use their 'main' weapon which seemed ok.

This is what I do:
Ashley - Assault rifle
Kaidan - Pistol
Garrus - Sniper rifle
Wrex - Assault rifle (but he usually switches to shotgun)
Tali - Pistol (she has low health, so I prefer to have her further away)
Liara - Pistol

After some experimenting I got to a conclusion that is, at the very least, a decent way and pattern for my original question.

Pistol - Great pick for Kaidan (his class has bonuses for pistols) and for Liara (pistols are super accurate compared to everything else but endgame weapons). Equipping heat reduction Mods (such as frictionless materials) on it apparently encourages the squadmate to unload it non-stop at the enemy.

Assault Rifles - Generally the squadmates will shoot in small bursts. Even when the enemy is at their feet and the weapon has zero heat, they wont full-auto. I simply don't think Assault Rifles are efficient that way, so that weapon is a no no. I should test it with 2 x Fictionless Materials - maybe they'll unload it like they do with heat-less pistols.

Shotguns - Carnage is a great damage skill so I go by the rule of "whoever can use carnage will use shotguns" - Wrex and Tali mostly. Besides, properly modded with +Weapon Force mods (such as Sledgehammer), it will knockdown most enemies at mid/short range, making the squad a mini CC-troop at close quarters. Oh, and btw - Carnage generates no heat!

Sniper Rifles - No squadmate will scope and snipe people from kilometers away so I avoid it. That said, sniper extraordinarie Garrus Vakarian somehow makes awesome use of these (even on point blank) and I default him to it. The +Weapon Force mod trick described on shotguns is very valid here also. It's satisfying just stop shotting and watching an enemy at about 30% HP being sent flying then finished by Garrus.

I can say that Wrex and Ashley with Assault Rifles will shoot pretty much non-stop except for activating powers with Specter X, Frictionless X, Scram Rail X mods. I have stood and watched them spray non-stop for several minutes straight, just to see how long they would shoot. Pretty much my sound in battles is non-stop AR roar with enemies yelling occasionally. I don't know what type of guns you are using, or what mods, but my guys don't stop shooting with assault rifles. Now if I change up the mods to increase the heat, then they do stop shooting, acting like heat is an issue, maybe my game is glitched but my companions seem to take heat into all shooting decisions.

With one Frictionless mod on a Spectre rifle I've found my squadmates unload Assault Rifles forever instead of doing those burst things.

Anyway, to how I do things...
Liara & Kaidan: Pistols
Garrus: Assault Rifles, since they have higher DPS, but when outdoors or dealing with enemies mid-long range I always switch him to the Sniper. With maxed Sniping and his class ability I've found enemies suddenly dropping all the time.
Wrex: When CQB is happening I always switch him to shotguns, otherwise I default to Assault Rifles
Tali: I try to get her on the shotty as much as possible, but when fighting over range I make her use a pistol
Ashley: I generally use the same idea as Wrex for her, but I will give her a Sniper in certain long range scenarios just because the Assault Rifle isn't accurate enough even in a fully trained AIs hands

tali with master pistol marksman is a beast, you can be behind cover and watch her just empty 30+ shots into an enemy so quick. usually i will give tali the spectre class pistol and shotty, all my squadmates get the best guns.

actually i give them better guns than me usually, generally because i dont think they use them to their full ability (AR). so giving them stronger weapons with the best mods seems to help alot, i can make due with "sloppy seconds" for weapons. lol, usually they will get the newest and most OP weapon, and i will get their hand-me-down.

*its a little aggrivating to find the right mods for my guns tho, i tend to sell off everything at the store once i have my setup. the inventory gets overfilled, so usually i rally the 3-4 mates i usually take out and fix up their loadouts. after i use everything i need i will go sell the rest off

i use to change them based on the situation ( ex. thorian creepers on Feros : Shepard shotgun, Tali shotgun, Ashely/Wrex shotgun) but what i usualy use for them is:
Ashley - assault rifle
Garrus - sniper rifle
Wrex - shotgun
Tali - shotgun
Kaiden - pistol (what else? )
Liara - pistol (ofc)
...but i use to change Garrus to assault rifle in close combat and Ashley to sniper in long range
..i usualy use snowblind rounds for assault rifle 'cause it generates no heat and everybody shoots non-stop ( shepard too ) + i like the sound of those ..and hammerhead rounds for shotguns..and cryo rounds for sniper 'cause of shield bypass ..ofc shotguns are full frictionless materials, assault rifle full combat optics, sniper full kinetic coil
