Pure renegade runs are a bit weird. I don't think anyone's that much of a douchebag. Same can be said for pure paragon.

I prefer renegade over paragon, because it's the complete opposite of who I am in real life. My first playthrough was paragon, but I picked the renegade option on the council choice (in Genesis...not because I was trying to be a jerk, but I didn't think it was worth the risk to keep the status quo) and I went renegade in Zaeed's mission (very rarely do I pick paragon on that, even if I'm on a paragon character). There were several other times where I picked the renegade option, because I liked the responses better (I almost always mess up Cathka, for example). Also, the last month or so I'd be really sick and frustrated with being sick, so being a renegade was a nice little stress relief.
The only people I have a very tough time being a jerk to are most of my own crew (the exceptions being Kelly and Tali...need to bring the latter on more missions so that I might actually get to know her better and like her more...I didn't like Miranda when I was still new to the game, either, but she's grown on me a lot, so maybe Tali will, too). So generally, my renegades are jerks to everyone but their own crew.
In most games I play, it's very hard for me to play an evil character, but in ME, it's what I prefer, so it's not really the rule of thumb for me. Not sure what it is that sets ME apart from other games in that regard.

I have the same "problem". I have yet to have a playthrough where I consciously let squaddies die on the SM, and I'm on my 8th playthrough right now and its not going to change for this one either.
I also can't bring myself to be a complete douche that is pure renegade. Some of those conversation options are just cruel. When I try to play complete renegade I usually end up as a renegon, mostly using renegade conversation options unless it makes me a mean ol' douchebag, then I choose the neutral or paragon option.
I don't think that this is a bad problem to have, it just shows that you are a normal human being that has compassion and normal emotions.

I'm with cheez on this. I never can do a pure renegade playthrough. Although i havn't done a pure paragon playthrough either though. Feels stupid to me to go pure either way. Mostly the only renegade things i do is treat the ****s like ****s, cause they deserve it. Why be a cruel ******* to the nicer people in the game..?

Well it took me like 7 Sheps to have a complete ahole.
Then again that ahole will be screwed in ME3. *points at sig*
No he won't. In one of his interviews about ME3, Casey Hudson stated that players will not be punished for their decisions. But I would love to see renegade Shepards BURN IN HELL at the end of ME3. Yeah!
