Does the first aid ability of companions (Alenko Liara etc) have any effect? For instance if Shepard has no First Aid due to his class, does investing in companion First Aid help to get better healing?

Yes, kind of like Decipher and Electronics on a companion lets you interact with an object if Shep doesn't have the skill.

Except that all instances of First Aid in the squad add together, rather than just working off the highest.

The best setup would be to only put 1 pt in First Aid on Shepard and the squadmates, because as Average Gatsby pointed out in his Insanity playthrough the first point grants the most "bang for your buck"; plus it saves points to be used for other skills.

But you might need that extra healing in an emergency. Granted having one point in First Aid for all squadmates in your party will give 120 points of healing per medigel (the same as rank 8 First Aid). I don't think you can say that extra points put into it are wasted.

This is pretty much the entire skill system in both Mass Effect games summed up in a nutshell--you put one point in everything, and then focus all other points into the skills you have the most incentive to max out, which usually translates into "the ones you use ALL THE TIME."

People actually use Medi-gel after the first 10 or so levels on Shepard??!!?? Dang, I almost never use the stuff, with medi-exos around and decent equipment. I have always found First Aid and anything above Specter level 4(first squad revive) to be an utter and total waste of points. To each his own.

There are only a very few instances where I bother with first aid on Shep, that is where it is needed to unlock medicine for neural shock. So sentinel and engineer get 5, pretty much other classes get 0
