I've played the entire series of Ultima, of Might & Magic, of Baldur's Gate, of Icewind Dale, of Fallout, of NWN, of Knights of the Old Republic, of Mass Effect, of Dragon Age. I've played classics like PlaneScape: Torment and disasters like The Temple of Elemental Evil.
DA2 is better than most all of the others, excluding DA:O and certain stunning installments of the others. Even then, note that we're recalling a fully patched-and-expanded DA:O and unwittingly comparing it with a just-released DA2 that only has a few item pack expansions.
In spite of our rpg-enthusiast mantra of story over graphics and sound and music, we really really do like our graphics and sound and music. In fact, I tried to replay PS:T recently, and did so for about 3-4 hours, but I quickly tired of the old-style graphics, several buggy glitches even in the patched version (people moonwalking - walking backwards) all over the place, and the clunky UI. I might try it again after applying some player mods that fix most of the bugs, but I'll need to make myself do it: it's hard giving up smooth UI and 3D graphics for animated sprites and text.
Further, I recall not liking DA:O that much, initially. I kept on dying. I couldn't figure out the UI. I didn't understand tactics. I didn't understand where/how to find enough healing/defense. Oh, and it was initially fairly buggy, too. Then as I learned the sophisticated ins-and-outs of the game, and bugs got fixed, I started liking it (and replaying it) more and more.
I've replayed DA2 several times now, and have several characters in the pipeline. My main gripe about DA2 is that I wish it were longer, bigger, had more to it. Think about that: all those gripes about reusing maps for cave and city settings, all the gripes about not really furthering certain DA:O plotlines ... they aren't gripes that we dislike DA2, per se, but that we like DA2 and want more of it.
So, yeah, I like the game. As I learn the tactics system and the new mechanics, I like it even more, because I then pass the initial frustration phase (like I had with DA:O) and really start to appreciate and delve into its intricacies. I look forward to more bug fixes and expansions.
