Guys, you really need to fix the spelling of Alpha in that banner. Great as it is, it hurts the eyes.

I've had that banner in my signature for days and never noticed!! :pinched:

Very enjoyable classic RPG style and does a good job of capturing the Mass Effect feel. Some of the graphics are surprisingly well done and the soundtrack is spot on for creating the proper Citadel atmosphere. The zooming and panning of the battle system adds a nice dynamic feel to otherwise standard ATB fights. The powers/abilities are mostly the same as in the ME games and seem to have about the same effects, adding a nice familiar feel. The addition of side quests and achievements is also another nice addition which I haven't seen in too many fan games.

Excellent job on this fan game guys. Looking forward to future releases.

after Squee913's Let's Play we're very tempted to include voice acting :D
whether this will move from the 'would be awesome to have'-list to the 'what we actually can include'-list remains to be seen ...

If I can share my humble opinion, I think voice acting would enhance the gaming experience (especially for those who are not accustomed to "modern RPGs"), but please consider file size. As someone who had troubles downloading the 1.0a version because the process kept failing after few minutes, I think the smaller file the better.

This is indeed something we'll have to consider. It's 100+ MBs, and it is just the alpha. Perhaps we could release 2 different versions?

You can always split the game in various files using WinRar.

Just downloaded the alpha myself, and i have to admit, it's quite good. All the little details really give it the "mass effect" feel. I especially liked the salarian singing i will survive, hehe. The overall layout and the battles reminds me of the old pokemon games for the gameboy, which is making me somewhat nostalgic. Anyways, great work so far. I look forward to seeing the full release.

Finally downloaded the alpha, going to check it out when I'm not dying. Err, sick.

Browsed the site/forums, too. Looks like a great community to hang around, with plenty of creativity in original content. My kind of place.

@ Epantiras and Phaedon:
Yeah.. filesize is something which should be considered but two versions, one for people who have slow connections and one who wants the super duper version. Maybe you could consider other filecompression algorithms. Don't know which would fit for RPG-Maker but its worth a search.

I will play the game this weekend because apprenticeship is not easy *rolleyes*
But Im looking forward to play this game. The screenshots are quite tempting. :D

And if you want some voiceacting of me: we can discuss about some examples through pm.

greets Fairhammer

Well, the program just produces a folder, and we turn it into a .rar by ourselves, thanks for the suggestion!

Hi MEC-Team,
I'm so happy I found this, you did excellent work, it was great fun to play MEC Alpha and I'm looking forward to the final version. There was no point at which I didn't feel like beeing back in the mass effect universe/future. Nice to meet characters like Al Jilani again who we know from ME1 or 2, also nice to meet new people though. There are several great ideas in the dialogues, as with the bounty-hunter or the C-Sec guy who tries to tell you that the bad technician must be responsible for the death of your brother.
As for bugs, I've only noticed a few:
-Terminals locking, telling me I ran out of time although I did not.
-I like those hacking-minigames, but for the one with the lightened spots you have to cross I am not sure what those lines are for? I thought I could only move on those lines, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Not sure if that's a bug though.
-When talking to that mercenary who has just ran out to "meet his friends", at a point the dialogue rushed through without waiting for me to press Enter in between, so I missed a few words of it.
By the way, I like the idea of being able to search the extranet, I just couldn't find any entries by chance (searched for well known things like "Citadel"). Will the extranet be integrated at a later point of the story and has just no relevance in chapter 1?
Also, the asari and the salarian that will be playable in the final version, will they have a completely different story or will they differ in their "origin"?
Again, thanks for the outstanding work, let's hope some people from Bioware play this. If they hadn't already promised that there will be more humour in ME3 I would highly recommend them to learn from your game in this aspect.

glad to hear you enjoyed the Alpha

- which version did you play, the terminals should have been fixed in 1.0b
- it's normal that you can freely move during the tube mini-game
- ah yeah, the dialog - I think some tabulator space has snuck in there that messed things up, but it's fixed and will be included in the next update
- so far the extranet is only a means to unlock certain things, e.g. the bonus for those who signed up for the Alpha (we have the sign up thread still open though ) or the ... ah not spoiling things, make a paragon playthrough ;)
but it has been mentioned before that people are looking for more information and we might include more information in the extranet

oh, you're not playing Vazill as the turian either; as was noticed, Vazill is already rather defined as a character (e.g. his paragon/renegade meters are already filled to a point)
but to answer the question each of the main characters has their own story, it's not replaying the same story with different characters/species.

once we're closer to the final designs of the protagonists we'll have to make a feature with more information about what we intend to do :D

I did play 1.0b. I tested the terminals again now to be sure, and now I can say better what happened. When I hack a v-base-terminal in time, everything is fine. But when I try to hack a v-base terminal and time runs out and then I go to another v-base-terminal and manage to hack it in time, it tells me time had run out again. I hope that helps you. Sorry if you thought the problem had been solved.:(

each of the main characters has their own story, it's not replaying the same story with different characters/species.

Sounds promising!:o

Oh, I meant something else.
There are several algorithms for filecompression. It does not ONLY differ in the fileending. Win-Rar for example has several algorithms like LZ7(seems to be an old one, there are plenty of new algorithms) or others to compress data. You can change the algorithm I think. Don't sure about the "free" versions.
Some are working better with textfiles other with other files.

And try to make an install file, this shrinks the size a lot!

I'll be honest and admit that the first time I encoutered that hacking minigame I thought I had to move the cursor on the lines... then I realized I could move it freely.

I'll see about adding it to the manual :)

here's a mini progress report for those not following the What We Are Working On (WWAWO) thread
- fixed more typos :?
- made sure the menus work again when returning to the Citadel after space exploration
- fixed the issues with Kalin's quest

Hello, everyone!

It's finally summer time, so let's review our progress so far!

First off, we released Alpha 1.0a and then a bugfix patch for it, 1.0b. Feedback so far has been very positive and we are looking forward to improve ourselves and the game accordingly to your suggestions.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, most of us will be occupied with our personal lives or work, but that doesn't mean that we will halt development during the summer.

The next update, 1.1, extends the story to Omega, where Vazill arrives hunting a lead on Vrohax's past employer. Omega, just like the Citadel, is a hub world, with its own NPCs, assignments, tilesets and people. So, watch out for more news on the What We are Working On thread!

Best wishes
