 I looked up SFA in BioWare social posts to get some context, but after filtering out all of the Warhammer results it seems like every other instance of SFA being mentioned in the DA2 forums is by Jack-Nader as well...

It must be sweet ****-all though, that makes sense.

if you have another target attacking your shield wearing warrior and are not to far from the spot where the rogue entered stealth, you can position the warrior to face the spot with the visable enemy between the two and time a Shield Bash or Scatter to reveal the rogue. 2h warriors can Scythe or Whirlwind.

I've used Whirlwind on the Ship Captains and it did NOT pull them out of stealth. Perhaps it's because my Whirlwind was not doing enough damage compared to their health bar? Perhaps I timed them too early?

Both are possible.  Can't really say much more unless there's video to show how you're currently trying to time it.  Sometimes I mess up the timing too.  Whirlwind also has a relatively low force multiplier (2x) so that is also a possibility.  Also, if you're using a physical damage 2H, then the Armor ratings on assassins is also probably docking off a lot of destealthing capability.  If you can, use Anderfel Cleaver (any elemental 2H for that matter, depending on what Act you're in) and see if that helps.

Decloaking assassins is rather hit and miss. I've been using bursting arrow lately, but its best to not let them move.

Better yet get stonewall on your tank, control aggro and just ignore the backstab attempts.
