I've run into a bit of a problem.

Just installed ME2 on my desktop, using the recommended set-up. The first initial window shows up fine, but when I actually click the 'Play' button, the screen goes black for about two seconds and then disappears, leaving a "ME2 has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. Derp, didn't download the patch. So I check all the threads here and didn't see my issue and got the latest patch (if this bug/glitch/whatever sounds familiar and has been addressed already in one of the stickies and I just missed it, apologies). Once that's installed I try again aaaand
nope.
Same thing.

All the system requirements have been met (and I even went so far as to turn all the fancy in-game visuals off).
I'm running XP, my CPU is the Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.20GHz, I have more than enough necessary RAM and hard drive space...

EDIT: I just realized I'm using the NVIDIA GeForce 5200 chipset, could that be it? That's probably it, isn't it. I'm a 360 gamer, LOL. But. Yeah. Is my current chipset responsible? Thanks.

Pentium 4 is a single core chip about 6ish years old and below minimum requirements.
Geforce 5200 is also below minimum performance.
Saying you have enough without posting ram values on a machine that old isn't saying much.
Hard drive space may also be an issue with a rig that old, will depend on setup, but will assume it and ram or ok.

Time to update the old computer if you want to play any newish game on it, because that just will not cut modern games.

You probably have an issue with drivers to go along with the outdated hardware as well. Update time.

TTBOMK, nVIDIA never released any Chipset with "5200" in its name.  Eight years ago, back when people still thought a Pentium P4 was worth wasting money on, nVIDIA was selling a Geforce FX 5200 graphics card with its "NV24" chip on that, but surely you are aware enough of the evolutionary nature of computers to realize that anything eight years old is merely history now, being well beyond merely obsolete.

PC MINIMUM System Requirements
OS = Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7
Processor = 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU
Memory = 1 GB RAM for Windows XP / 2 GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Hard Drive = 15 GB
DVD ROM = 1x Speed
Sound Card = DirectX 9.0c compatible
Direct X = DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)
Input = Keyboard / Mouse
Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported GPU Chips: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater(**); ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce G.205, G.210, 310, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9100, 9200, and 9300; ATI Radeon X1300, X1550, HD 2400, 3100, 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4350, and (probably) HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel  and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.
(**)Two of the Geforce 6800s are worse than the next-lower Geforce game card, the 6600 GT, and should be avoided (6800 SE, 6800 XT).

As you can see, there is no Pentium P4 that meets the game requirements.  PCs are not like consoles.  They change and consoles do not.  The only reason that I can imagine you would have joined the PC side of the Social Forums last January was because you have been playing some old LEGACY game(s) that match to an eight year old computer, such as KotOR and NWN1.  The Gaming world, and the PC world have both come very far beyond that primitive level, but it seems that you and your PC have not followed suit.

There is still an Xbox360 version of this game available.
