I don't know how, but I've seen people with avatars that definitely not available on the picture selection menu. I've seen some people who use gifs as avatars too. How do you do that?

Euh, you can hax it some intricate way when you make a character for DA:O then replace the thumbnail of that character with something custom so that one gets uploaded to the site instead of the original thumb, afaik. But how it works in detail, I don't know, it's somewhere on the boards, I ran into it some months back. Never tried it myself.
