Hey all,
I'm having the famous black screen issue. I am running ME2 through EA download manager (digital copy), and both ME2 and ME start up to a black screen and freeze. I think it may be a DirectX issue, but i'd rather not guess on something I don't know much about. All chipset, sound, and graphics drivers are updated. (edit*Also, patch 1.02 is installed.) Any help is appreciated.

First thing to do is download and install DirectX9.0c from Microsofts website. It should have been done when you downloaded the game from EA, but digital distributions are reknowned for not doing what they should do. Link here:

Bogsnot, I've tried that, but as I have a "newer or equivalent version", it will not install. Any ideas?

If the websetup version doesnt work and gives that error, try the stand alone distribution of DX9.0c

Couple more questions:
Win7 32 or 64 bit?
ATI Catalyst driver version?

the directx 9 didn't solve the issue, and the configuration is still reading directx 10 or later.

That doesn't mean a thing to me.  11.2?  11.3?  Those mean something.

Windows will always name whatever version of Direct3D is newest as the one it has installed, but when the game tries to run, it looks for DLL files that aren't included in Dx10 / Dx11, and can only be added to the system from Dx9, but all three Direct3D versions are fully compatible with one another.  .

Well sorry gorath. I thought he meant the specific version. I have 11.4.

And looking more closely on startup, I see a slight bit of red. Is red on the first intro ad? It may not be a "black screen" after all. The sound is skipping for a moment before the freeze. Could it be a sound issue? I have integrated sound. And no, i dont know the specifics. Tell me if you need more. Thanks for the continued help.

Fire up the configuration utility for ME2, select the system tab, and have a look what it says there for audio. It if mentions realtek, I would suggest downloading and installing the latest audio driver direct from realteks website, as the default driver included with Win7 is known to cause problem (51 page forum thread for it on win7 forums)

It just says high definition audio device. no realtek. Hmmm, it just seems like im stuck in the mud here. This is a problem. Mass Effect 1 also freezes on start. just downloaded it via eadm and found out.

Are you running them both as administrator, and/or in XP compatibility mode?
I keep forgetting to mention these 2 things, as I dont use Win7 myself.

I am having the same problem. I also have the EA Download Manager version of ME2. Win 7 64, too. It seems like it launched the game just fine before the Download Manager updated.

This thread has not reached any conclusion, and therefore, your comment belongs elsewhere, preferably in your own personal thread:

OK. So based on the info I stated in my post, I figured the quickest thing would be to uninstall and reinstall EA Download Manager. It fixed the issue. ME2 launches just fine and I can play. The last update for EADM must've been the issue. Try uninstalling it and downloading the latest full version. Hopefully, this has the same result for you, grayMatter93.

The latest EA download manager update introduced "EADM-ingame" function which was the cause for my game always freezing at start-up. As it says "not all games support this feature" or something along those lines so disabling it from download manager settings should fix it.
