Here's an idle thought I've had for some time. Doesn't it strike you that the song that drove Bartrand mad (esp when he could no longer hear it from the idol) seems to share some of the same characterstics that the Song that "Mother" claimed could no longer hear and drove her mad. I am wondering if there is a connection between these Primeval Dwarves and the first Darkspawn/Arch-Demons.

no.  pay attentions.  the "song" that The Mother talks about is the "calling" of the Old Gods.  The VERY THING that drives the Darkspawn to seek them (Old Gods) out.

The song Bartrand hears from the idle is nothing of the sort.

it's like saying an apple(old god drawing darkspawn) is a peach(idles song) because both are sweet(both are songs)

Before spouting total conjecture as fact (as we have only theories on what the idol is, it's impossible to say it's "nothing of the sort" because we don't know what sort it is), it's probably a good idea not to start off with things like "pay attention."  Perhaps you bumped the self-superiority dial when reaching for the radio?  It's over there on the right, you might want to check it.

Well, while I think the Chantry's song and dance about the Maker's divine punishment isn't how it actually played out, let us not forget that the taint and the first Blight came about directly after the Tevinter's attempted to enter the Golden City.

Whether it was actually their intention to enter the Golden City or if this is more Chantry propaganda is unclear. However... the Tevinter's did slaughter thousands of slaves and used over a quarter of the empire's stores of lyrium (from a DAO codex entry, at least) to enter the fade corporeally. So while its source may have ties to other sources, like the Primeval Thaig, or the Old Gods, its appearance in history is directly tied with the Magisters putting their bodies into the Fade. So I would say this event is either the source or a catalyst for the taint spreading rapidly.

A related question: Did the Black City truly used to be the Golden City? Again, I know this is what the Chantry says, but the darkspawn corruption predates the Chantry. Given the ruins of ancient cultures like the elves and the Tevinter-pre Blight, there appears to be many mentions of the Fade. Does any of them actually state the Black City was Golden and was corrupted?

It would seem like pretty big news in the mage world. Like if the moon changed colors or something.

I don't have the link handy, but I believe Gaidner mentioned both that there was a cult of the Maker that predated Andraste and that the Gold City was, at one point in the past, actually gold.

The more interesting aspect about the taint is what happened to Tamlen when he touched the Eluvian (he became a darkspawn versus a ghoul, no?) and what happens to Grey Wardens during the Calling; I believe they also 'become' darkspawn of a sort.

Well, to me it falls to the scientific property of Genetics.

Genetics seem to have played a vital role in 'choosing' who lives and who dies. For example, a person can go through their whole life without being infected by Chicken Pox, some people do however. The people who never get chicken pox already had built up an immunity and they may get some minor sicknesses from something else, but they'll never get chicken pox.

To me, Darkspawn taint kinda acts like a genetic thing. While as it affects one person by killing them, it could increase the immunity and senses of another. Lol, so that's what I think.

As for magic, that could play a vital role in it as well, but I'm not entirely sure as to how.

Well, that's my take on this subject :P

Well, if magic is "returning" to Thedas, that obviously means there was a point when it "left" - and any large civilizations that existed before that point were probably heavily dependent on magic (after all, if everyone can use a little magic it would've become a part of day-to-day living). Avernus explains that the Taint is a source of magic as powerful as blood (which runs the risk of possession) or lyrium (limited to what you can carry and hazardous to health), and we know that Darkspawn share a mental connection with each other and the Old Gods in lieu of the Fade.

So a possible explanation is that the Taint was an attempt by an old civilization (the Golden City analogy) that was established during the height of magical power in Thedas to create a new "system" of magic to replace the diminishing Fade-based magic (without having to resort to blood magic or scrounging for lyrium). Since the Fade would have been increasingly difficult to access as magic faded, the new "system" would have been based on another source of magical power. The first attempt might have been lyrium, thus producing the tainted red lyrium idol in DA2 (which would explain it being an idol: people would have worshiped it as it was their source of magic and dreams), while a later attempt would have been connecting it to the Old Gods (which would explain why Tainted people become susceptible to the Old Gods' calls even though the Old Gods aren't Tainted until the Darkspawn find them).

Perhaps the pre-Darkspawn were the last survivors of the ancient civilization, hiding deep underground - sheltered by walls of lyrium, feeding off an Old God's dreams - as they waited for magic to return. And in the course of their waiting went bat**** insane, started eating each other, turned to ritualized rape to sustain their population, and finally decided to wake up the Old God with their now-Tainted magical system to find out how to speed up the return of magic.

Then kinda forgot about that goal as they rushed out to murderize everyone living above them.

I think its a Qunari science experiment gone wrong.

I doubt the Idol and the song of the Old Gods is the same. Some of the darkspawn were sane after they stopped hearing it. And the Idol's song seems to affect beings differently than the Archdemons'.

One thing that strikes me as interesting it that since the darkspawn can hear the Old Gods' song even before they become Archdemons, it implies the Old Gods and the taint are perhaps related somehow.

This makes sense given that lyrium would ultimately be a finite resource. Maybe pre-Arlathan as there are mentions that all elves once had magic.
