I don't think they give a crap. 2 million sold, probably wont be a Dragon Age 3, laughing all the way to the bank.

*sigh* not sold, shipped and EA might be laughing, if profits exceed their projections, I don't think they will the way things are going. Whilst the development team won't be laughing when they're all fired by EA when they shut down the franchise.

The rest of us might be a little miffed, but, there are other RPG developers out there, Witcher 2, skrym etc are coming out and someone new will step into the gap. So, it's the development team thats in the tricky position really.

Stunned? Hardly, they expected backlash with all the changes they made. What they are probably annoyed about is not attracting CoD crowd as planned. And maybe wasting the preorder-of-trust card, knowing it wont come back to play for next title.

It makes sense to me. Medieval fantasy rpg, no matter how much dumbed down, will hardly interest fans of military multiplayer shooters. If I, say, played strategy games solely, chances are marketing of the latest FIFA wouldnt even reach me, and if it did, it could speak volumes about being the most streamlined football game in existence, I still wouldnt give a damn. Because this kind of game never appealed to me. And advertisement alone isnt enough to change people's preferences, not on the big scale.

About DA2, i think they learned not to abuse Ctrl+C - Ctrl+V so much. But its still EA at helm, and in every public statement they speak about mass market, being trendy, Enhanced Accessibility™ and so on. So future BW games will still likely have Twilight romances instead relationship-building DAO-style, gory anime combat (where your hero is superman) over tactical one, glaring void where once pickpocketing/coercion/non-combat skills used to be..

I'm pretty sure it hasn't (yet) sold two million, two million have been sold OUT (to stores and such). It may seem like a minor semantics issue, but it does make a difference as far as profit goes, iirc.

As for if Bioware is 'stunned' or not...well, I'm sure they weren't expecting just how...impassioned some of the criticism was going to be. I kind of wish the the negative response had been a little more even tempered, simply because foaming at the mouth hyperbole is easy to dismiss (perhaps rightly so). Legitimate criticism can be lost when it seems like you're much more concerned with making petty jabs and trying to hurt Bioware with your nasty words and sick burns (rather than with your wallet, which is generally more effective).

In any case, I'm sure they're watching the sales figures closely. I hope it's enough of a reality check that they address the issues in the next installment, but not so much a 'failure' that EA decides to cut its losses entirely and stick a fork in the franchise because it's 'done' as far as they're concerned.

I suspect they're concerned about how little DA2 appealed to their broader target audience and how much it seems to have alienated some of its older fanbase. Rushing this game was a big mistake. Instead of truly showcasing their new and improved Dragon Age, they shoehorned it into a deadline. If they had taken their time and made an incredible action RPG, they'd be in a much better position to retain old fans and attract new ones.

With their shortened development cycle, I think the only direction to take (other than shelving DA for now) is to shore up the DA2 style and see how that goes.

No company takes board criticism seriously and it will be dismissed regardless. They may say otherwise, but its true, since a company has other sources to determine what's right or wrong with a product. Only when board criticism coincides with these other sources, there will be the appearance of having listened.

And that remains to be seen.

Also I'm pretty sure, I don't give a flying if there's a DAIII, since there have been multiple statements, that they won't go back to complex companion relationships and less Tom and Jerry like fighting. So, from a total egotistical standpoint, why should I care?

Pride is a hard pill to swallow. Going back on DA2 for DA3 would be equivalent to admitting they made a mistake and that doesn't come easily to anyone. Mike Laidlaw already said in an interview they wouldn't be doing a 180-loop again with DA3, so best we can hope for is a revamped DA2 or, since my brother referred to DA2 as a "beta," the real DA2.

In my (admittedly limited) experience creators that do follow or frequent social forums are more likely to engage with and acknowledge posters whose criticism does not contain a lot of personal attacks, hyperbole and wailing and gnashing of teeth (since it tends to put them on the defensive or give them the handy excuse that you're just trolling). You're right though, in the grand scheme of things the opinions of the average poster don't carry much weight, I shouldn't overemphasize it or try to police the reactions of other posters.

You shouldn't care if it doesn't appeal to you. My last paragraph was a simple statement of my own fears as someone who has enjoyed Dragon Age (Origins, Awakening and II) immensely. It's not something I expect dissatisfied customers to give a rat's arse about.

Pride?

Do you really think its Laidlaw's ego making the decisions about the franchise? Not in corporate business. It's the shareholders, the stock market and the management drooling for their bonus payments, calling the show.

Pride isn't restricted to an individual, it can easily apply to a group or organisation as well.

Not when shareholders and million dollar bonus payments are involved.

I guess only time (meaning, DA3) will tell.

That's about it - and if there even is a DAIII.

What many people fail to understand is that a constricted timeline was not the ground reason this game was rushed. Sure, had they had say 36 instead of 18 months, the game quite probably wouldn't have been a rushed one. But the thing is, 18 month is enough time to make an excellent sequel, if only developers keep in their minds that they have little time, and consequently pick their battles well.
And as it happened, DA:RtP didn't pick their battles. They instead wasted resources reinventing what wasn't wrong instead of reusing them, and therefore ran out of time (and probably budget) to properly flash out the rest of the game. How many new dungeons were scrapped out to make room (time- and resource-wise) for the new Flemeth, the new Darkspawn (of whom we only see ogres and hurlocks for this same reason, BTW), etc?

This. ^^ Its Laidlaw doing the 180. I don't understand why you would go and change everything on such a short time period and expect a game as good as the original.

Nah. They've been through this before. With 2mil+ sales, they ain't worried. BIO will keep chugging along making great games like DA2, BG2, and ME2 and making overrated crap games like BG, KOTOR, and S:RPG.

Designers can get defensive and attack just as fans can too. Fans even more so.

I tend to think that if anybody on the forums stays on here and keep discussing a game's negative flaws, then all we are going to see is the negativity. It happened with ME2, and it's happening with DA2.

Both games have genuine criticisms, but it's easy to get sucked into a swirling mire of anger and negativity with threats to boycott BioWare and/or franchise. Speaking from experience here.

I think the powerful "love it/hate it," mentality regarding DA2 contributes to the issue of devs not responding. Mind you, as I recall, Gaider and Hepler and Kristjanson have braved the forums a a few times to talk with people. Other BioWare employees as well, so kudos for them.

*sigh* Can't believe im responding to the Volourn troll.

They did not sell 2million+. It was sold in, meaning shipped/sold to retailers. More realsitically it was around 1.3 million in sales. Not too shabby, but not close to what people think it is.

I find it hard to believe they didn't expect this backlash. They just assumed we would be stupid enough to not hold it against them when it came time for DLC or DA3.

Think again.

It sold 2mil+. Just deal with it, and stop listenting ton vghchartz which is the real trap.

Alistairlover: I know you are trolling me with that vid but it was hilarious anyways! Good stuff. :)

And if you have already given them your money? What if you pre-ordered the game with misplaced trust? How do you get your satisfaction when you are bitter and feeling used? The reaction here is often called 'childish', it is emotional. They cry loud enough to be heard by the potential consumer base.
'I feel my trust in you as a company has been betrayed,' the unhappy paying fan is saying,' and those $60 I paid for your product will be EXPENSIVE. I have the right!"
