It makes me want to hear what the NPCs have to say. This very rarely happened in TOR.

Just snipped to the last line, but I felt just the opposite. Gettting quests and talking to NPCs was much more enjoyable in TOR to me. But thats probably because I duo that game 100% of the time. Having multiple players involved, especially ones RPing different personalites, is where it really starts to shine.

TSW isn't terrible, (in fact its great) but duoing in that game isn't nearly as fun. You each have to do your quest conversations separately, you don't get to actually talk, and you make no choices. And worse, the extremely limited journal and inability to see what quests your partner has makes it a complete pita to stay on the same page. Also the minimap only tracks your own objectives, unlike TOR.

Where TOR really shines best is replaying those same quest conversations on different characters. All the conversations seem fresher. on TSW they are exactly the same, even when on a different faction. Which means its much easier to notice you're stuck on the same old quest objective. (kill xx number of xx) And in TOR those kind of objectives you complain about are usually just the bonus, not the main objective.

Don't get me wrong, when TSW is good, its amazing. Using the in game browser to solve quests using the real world internet will bend your brain the first time you do it. Especially since the game doesn't hold your hand and suggest that.

But listening to NPCs spout off dialogue for quests I find far less entertaining. Especially with a partner. TOR really spoiled us for every other game in that regard. But TSW wasn't nearly as painful as it was trying TERA recently. Where you couldn't even be bothered to read the quests and it was easiest to just click right through to the objectives. Even visiting the questgivers felt like too much effort.

I just upgraded both our TSW accounts to Lifetime yesterday. Because we are enjoying the game but are still too busy in TOR to devote much time to it yet. Its nice to know we can just hop in the game whenever we feel like it without worrying about subscriptions.

Welp, guess TOR was a failure for BioWare and EA, then?

Wasn't interested in an MMO with paid subscription fee, still not interested in it with it being F2P. MMOs have no immersion because you have l33t haxors running around.

Failure in the corporate eyes in being a WoW competitor. Doesn't mean it's still a failure in the future. If this game already recouped the budget back and continues to grow from a F2P formula, I don't see how that can be considered failure? This is the second biggest MMO right now. Going to a F2P formula is smart to keep appeal and interest going. Just as long as they find a formula that isn't P2W, it will be successful. It could potentially be the most successful F2P MMO.

This finally gives me an opportunity to play this game. I'll be trying it out this fall for sure. I just don't want to invest time in an MMO and sub fee every month. At least they give me the opportunity to try it out now. I'm sure a lot of people are like me and were waiting for it to be F2P. Can only create more appeal.

Honestly can't see it as a failure.  Many MMO's receieved huge profit inreases after adopting the F2P model and many game players will now only try an MMO if it has a F2P model of some sort.

The Subscription only model is just being shunted for the more favourable F2P model.

Yep, in that I agree. Though I can't help but feel that it's only going F2P because it missed EA's expectations.

Of course, F2P relies upon people buying premium items. If that doesn't happen, will TOR continue to be updated?

Oh God, it's ACTUALLY going to F2P? I wonder how the swtor forum is handling it.

"Swtor is a financial success!" They said.
"It's not sinking, it's just a feature!" They said.

It makes me happy to know this conglomerate failure of a game is forced to go free to play whilst a game such as Rift, a game from a studio no one ever heard of has lasted over a year and made an actual profit.

I'd almost take up Bioware on this offer if I wouldn't get banned for the most asinine of reasons or encounter their ridiculous game breaking bugs.

So, f2p after 8 months while WAR is still subscription based? This makes me sad.

Oops! Should've taken the safe bet and just made KOTOR3 - but what can you expect with EA and LucasArts both calling the shots? It's like a two-for-one deal on fail.

The f2p features can be accessed here: http://www.swtor.com/free/features

It doesn't say anywhere about whether players need to pay for the game itself though, so it might in fact be b2p just to access the story content. Which I think is pretty fair.

Also there could be microtransactions to reduce the limits in the said link, but nothing about details.

Some people also suspect that the F2P feature will come out at the same time when the expansion comes out.

They should finish KOTOR 2 first.

I have never been more excited for a game or ever waited for a game this long. What Bioware is doing with Old Republic can possibly change MMo's in general. Questing, crafting, exploration. To begin I have actually beta'd the game I'm not allowed to say more. I have played it at Pax also.

Look at the hopeful comments opening this thread. Now we have f2p looming and 500k subs.

What an utter mess. I think this should serve as a lesson going forwards

Honestly don't know if I will go back.  My problem with the game was more the flow and style (Game just couldn't decide if it was single player or Multi-player)

Also if Guild Wars 2 turns out to be good.... well.... you know.....

/ Objective(Light side +5) It's def the right way to go at least. From POV of most people playing MMOs, TOR was a major jurassic 2005(CE) clusterhump for a number of months following it's launch. People left. If BW managed to do some wonders with duct tape and whatnot, not many remained to witnes/appreciate it. Assuming they have somehow managed to fix some of the most annoying flaws going, this way EA can give TOR a second change at least. Second Launch Event even,if ye will, Verily indeed.

- Neutral (Karma +20) I wish EA  made Ultima Online F2P instead. There's a game people trying it would atleast find new and fresh. Which ofc is a touch ironic but hay.

\\ Subjective (Dark side +5 ) Wether or not it deserves second change is entirely another matter. Out of..what, 10 things that really pissed me off with TOR 7 are so deep in uhhh depths of design and game mechanics I can't imagine coup,e of content patches even touching the issues.  I HATE HERO ENGINE so much. I'm also very tired of watching talking heads and getting to make Bioware DecisionsTM like
" This sexy Alien Love Interest will now join your party. Ok?
/YES!
- I guess.
\\It makes me angry she joins my party!(dark side option:o)

I stopped playing months ago, won't be going back even with F2P, all this means to me is that EA is now starting to step in and take a firmer hand on BioWare's problems. The way BioWare's reputation has gone into the gutter, the way they seem to be missing over and over again...the way they're basically costing EA money on top of already costing $800 million to buy...BioWare's days are numbered. Three strikes and you're out, BioWare is no longer BioWare. And as goes BioWare, so goes EA's CEO.

It's actually not that bad, just... not that  good, haha. The Voice Acting and Cinematics are great for an MMO, but that shouldn't of been their main focus because... it's well an MMO - gameplay should come first. The Beta was actually better than release - it had more/better content and such.

Actually I'd say EAware's F2P option is not a bad move for the player base and themselves.

If the news is true, new players can make a one time purchase of $15 and get unlimited access to all 8 classes' story. I'd actually say that it totally justifies the $15 cost.

If anything is not justified, it probably doesn't justify the 20G disk space and the time to download the said 20G, or the time you are going to spend on loading screens and traversing across huge maps for no reason and frustrating datacron hunt.

I, however, will remain in a wait-and-see position just to make sure that there isn't any nasty tricks with this F2P model and everything is the same as advertised in the link here(http://www.swtor.com/free/features) and that leveling experience for free players isn't frustrating.

If GW2 or any other new MMOs are good I probably won't have time for TOR though. However, if I have time, I'll probably come back just to finish the storyline of a few classes since it will be free for me.

Let's see ... I'll give my honest opinion here.
It certainly doesn't justify the ridiculous cost;
It most likely would be a worse decision than making Kotor 3;
It was rushed out of the window and the "founders" (in game title for first subscribers) were hurt the most;
Designers made stupid and disastrous decisions in several patch updates;
It still has really bad optimization; travel takes forever; loading screens are nasty (btw, interesting video here:

However, considering that WoW can blatantly charge $15/month...
This game does have a few points that is superior to WoW. class story during leveling is decent enough; it has good voice acting; Pre-max level PvP is decent enough and imo a much better idea than the system in WoW;
Huttball is a pretty creative warzone; classes were fairly balanced in patch 1.1.5;
Also, for some reason warzones are actually decent experience. In TOR I have almost never seen players who are so bad that it makes my head explode, while in WoW, that was about twice a day. Maybe...the small warzone map and warzone design does encourage players to play at least somewhat objectively.

And considering that after F2P comes, free players only need to pay one payment of $15 to have unlimited access all 8 classes' leveling and story experience, I'd say it is a decent bargain, like buying a bunch of used games. However I don't see other features make the game worth subscribing to.

Well, certainly the deal is not nearly as good as buying a bunch of great games from steam summer sale especially when you buy a bundle full of games you love, but it is a soooooooo much better deal than subscribe WoW for a year and get a free copy of diablo 3 (this deal is a truly terrible deal).

It's a strange day when making back your budget and then switching to a more profitable operations model makes a game a "failure".

Reinforces my belief that most people on internet forums actually have no clue how to run a business.
