I wish we had more MMO's with less servers.
It is as if everybody forgets it takes a very succesfull launch followed by very decent amounts of staying power to keep some odd 30+ servers lively after that initial free month and release hype heat die out.
I keep dreaming of a PvP oriented MMORPG that has..say, 3 servers globally, with little to no instanced content. In such environment, you could easily have the vibe of lively, vibrant world and community even with very modest amounts of players(say, 100k people.Case in point, Eve Online)
Virtually all MMORPGs offer a relatively small, heavily instanced world and some 40 seperate servers. In such environment, community is spread wide and thin to begin with. It will always be very easy to get that unwelcome ghost town vibe on most servers once the immediate post launch hype dies.
I wager the said ghost town vibe has knocked more MMOs in that bottomless pit of irrelevancy than random assortment of immediate post-launch issues like unfinished content or bugs.
